Chapter description[]
- After a quarter-moon of traveling, the patrol arrives at the gorge. Hawkwing freezes as he hears the stream in the distance, the sound of home. As he cautiously peers over the edge, two young cats confront them for trespassing. A third cat emerges from the gorse to scold the younger cats, and Hawkwing recognizes him as Fidgetpaw. Fidgetpaw warmly greets his Clanmates, and Hawkwing apologizes for failing to save him from Twolegs. The SkyClan deputy explains to Violetpaw how Fidgetpaw was captured by Twolegs during their journey. Four more cats arrive, and Hawkwing and Blossomheart recognize the two adult cats as Mintfur and Nettlesplash, who originally stayed behind when SkyClan left the gorge. The pair introduce their four kits: Gravelpaw, Palepaw, Nectarpaw, and Fringepaw. Hawkwing introduces Violetpaw as his daughter with Pebbleshine, and the black-and-white she-cat adds that her mother died when she was a kit. Mintfur sympathizes with Hawkwing's loss.
- Nettlesplash and Mintfur guide their Clanmates down the gorge to their camp in a sheltered hollow next to it. Mintfur explains that they don't sleep in the gorge and old caverns since it is difficult to guard from foxes with so few cats. Hawkwing shares news of Darktail's death, much to Mintfur and Nettlesplash's satisfactions, and he asks if they will return to lake with them, where SkyClan has found a new territory with the other four Clans. Gravelpaw and his littermates complain about leaving their home, but Fidgetpaw reasons that StarClan would want them to reunite with Leafstar and the rest of their Clan. Mintfur presses Fidgetpaw about leaving Frecklewish, who explains that Twolegs are holding her captive nearby.
- In the morning, Nettlesplash shows them a Twoleg nest that towers into the sky. Fidgetpaw explains how he's seen Frecklewish appear on a ledge high above a tree, but it is too far to jump down. Nettlesplash adds that he once went inside the Twoleg nest to search for Frecklewish, but he got lost. As Violetpaw observes the staggered ledges outside of the Twoleg nest, she formulates an idea.
