"Once we're warriors, no one will be able to keep us apart. I don't care if it puts Sandynose's tail in a twist. You're going to prove to him that you're a great warrior and so am I. We'll be the best warriors in SkyClan, and he won't be able to stop us from doing anything we want."

Chapter description[]

Twigpaw enjoys the breeze as she walks with Sparrowpelt and Sandynose to mark the ThunderClan border. When they arrive, Sandymose meows that well-marked borders help avoid battles. Twigpaw wonders if her mentor is trying to remind her of not reporting Dovewing and Tigerheart, but pushes the thought away. Sparrowpelt meows that he cannot wait for his kits to be old enough to explore, and continues that he wants SkyClan to thrive for them as well. Sandynose states that kits can be worrisome, as they cannot always be protected and are so determined about their choices; Twigpaw wonders if he is talking about Finpaw. Sandynose compliments her as she marks the scent-line. She is puzzled that he is praising her, but tells herself to not be paranoid. Her mentor tells her to go to the lake alone to mark the border, and Twigpaw lifts her tail, wondering if she has finally won Sandynose's trust.
Twigpaw freezes when she hears Finpaw calling her name. The two warriors are still visible as he jumps out of the brambles, and she asks Finpaw if he should be training. Finpaw replies that he has already finished, and can help her mark the border. Twigpaw says that she is not supposed to be with him, because Sandynose said that he would learn quicker if it were not for her. She adds that they can hang out when they are warriors, but he angrily replies that he is too clumsy, and will never be who his father wants. Twigpaw tells him that he is special to her, and they will be the best warriors in SkyClan no matter what Sandynose thinks. Finpaw brightens, but Twigpaw sees Sandynose and tells him to go. He trots away, and Twigpaw turns to her mentor. The tom is satisfied that she sent Finpaw away, and says that they will become warriors faster if they concentrate. Twigpaw turns away to mark the border, thinking to herself that she should be happy about pleasing Sandynose, but she would already be a warrior if she stayed in ThunderClan. She wonders if it is the price she must pay for staying with her kin.
Twigpaw goes back to the camp, and she smells ThunderClan as she nears the grove. She sees Ivypool, Cinderheart, and Bumblestripe conferring with Leafstar, their pelts unkempt and mud-streaked. The three warriors say that their camp was destroyed from a rockslide, which also injured many cats. Leafpool asks Leafstar if she should help ThunderClan, and Ivypool tells the leader that they came to ask if SkyClan had extra herbs. Leafstar replies that her Clan can help. Twigpaw volunteers, but Sandynose states that it is ThunderClan's emergency. She wonders how the tom could refuse to aid ThunderClan in a time of need, and Leafstar allows her to go. Twigpaw is eager as Leafpool states what herbs to gather. Leafstar tells them to take Fallowfern, Harrybrook, and Plumwillow as well, but Sandynose is still reluctant. As they exit the camp, Twigpaw's mentor follows them. He hisses that she cannot be part of two Clans, and coldly adds that she needs to decide who to fight for. Twigpaw is hurt, but shame washes over her as she realizes that he is right: part of her still lay with ThunderClan.
