"Rootspring couldn't help imagining a future where they'd be together forever. Somehow they'd find a way. They had to. [...] And yet now, as he glimpsed Clan lands once more, he knew the future he'd pictured could never come true. The Clans were real, and the way he felt about Bristlefrost was just a feeling. How could he sacrifice his loyalty as a warrior for a dream?"

Chapter description[]

Rootspring races with Bristlefrost up a slope. Though he'd cheated, Bristlefrost had managed to outrun him. He meows that he would win one time before they got home. They had raced over every hill, leaving the others behind, and he knew they wanted to make the best of their time while they still had some. As they reach WindClan territory, Rootspring thinks about the impossible dream he had imagined with Bristlefrost, and knows it is impossible to throw away the Clans and the role as a warrior, all he had ever known for his feelings.
Bristlefrost tells him that they would be home by tomorrow. She suggests that they head straight to ThunderClan territory, and Rootspring disagrees. As Needleclaw pulls up next to them, she stares at the other she-cat and meows that they would be breaking the rules the Clans made about the Sisters. Bristlefrost argues that they would feel more at ease since they knew Squirrelflight, and that Squirrelflight would also know everything was okay. Rootspring disagrees, ordered by his sister and to the disappointment of the gray she-cat. Bristlefrost goes to check on the Sisters through long grass and weeds.
Needleclaw snaps at Rootspring for liking Bristlefrost, meowing that she was only loyal to her Clan and labels her a rule-breaker. Though Rootspring protests, the black and white she-cat is insistent and is worried that her brother will be hurt by her loyalty in the end. Rootspring lies that he was glad Bristlefrost was so loyal to her Clan, and the rest of the argument is cut off by a pained yowl. He dashes toward the scene, finding that Moon is caught in some Twoleg vines
As the gray sister struggles, the vine tightens, and Rootspring tells Moon to not move until she is trapped entirely against the ground. Bristlefrost suggests they pull it clear, but Snow knows it is impossible, and tells her as such. When Snow clears away the dirt, Rootspring is able to see that the vine went into the ground. Snow attempts, but fails, and Moon starts panicking. Rootspring promises to save her, and after reassuring Tempest, the tabby leads the Sisters away to go ahead.
Sunrise brings up the idea that he communicates with the earth to see the problem, telling Rootspring that he could do it. He closes his eyes in concentration, and when he opens them, is staring at a mound of dirt. Digging below, he finds a block of wood that was holding the trap wire in place. Bristlefrost and Rootspring digs the block of wood loose, and when Snow tugs the vine, it slides away from Moon and the sister becomes free from the trap. Moon reassures Snow that she was only lightly bruised, and Rootspring explains to Bristlefrost that he just felt where to look in answer to her question. He's excited about his power and wonders of the extent of it.
The group reaches the moor as dusk starts. He looks at the lake that marked the Clan territory, exhausted. Bristlefrost parts with the party, telling Rootspring that she should warn Squirrelflight of the Sisters' presence and saying her good-byes with the rest of the group. She heads toward the forest that was ThunderClan territory. Rootspring watches her go, thinking of the dreams that pictured him and Bristefrost together in the future. Needleclaw comforts him by saying that he would get over her, but Rootspring is doubtful about this.
