- Rootspring walks out of the warriors den, noting that it had been cramped as the Sisters had slept there. He could hardly believe that the camp had been filled with glaring ghosts, hoping it had been a dream, but realizes it was not a dream. He wondered why Ashfur had been there, but shakes his pelt off as he remembers that Hawkwing, Alderheart, and Frecklewish had left to question the dark warrior.
- He meets Sunrise, and the big she-cat compliments him on his performance the night before. He shakes off the compliment, wondering aloud why the spirits were so unhappy. Sunrise informs him that he has the gift, and can summon the ghosts and ask them. Sunrise teaches him how to summon so many spirits, and Rootspring realizes that his Clanmates are staring at him. As the Sisters are about to go, Squirrelflight asks them if they could try to summon Bramblestar one more time. They politely decline, and thank Leafstar for the shelter. Before leaving, Sunrise talks Rootspring about his feelings for Bristlefrost and the she-cat's feelings for him. She tells him that it's obvious that the pair of cats are in love, and that the Clans make everything difficult. The two groups part ways.
- Rootspring overhears Squirrelflight and Leafstar talking about what to do with Ashfur and Bramblestar's body. He spots Bristlefrost, and asks her to come aside so he can talk to her in private. He confesses his feelings for her, and Bristlefrost says that she loves him as well. She adds that they cannot be together, but Rootspring insists that their feelings matter more than rules. He states that they need to make a choice. Bristlefrost states that Rootspring wants her to join him in SkyClan, and declines the offer. She asks him if he will leave SkyClan, and she gives him some time to think about it.
- As Rootspring returns to camp, he smells Hawkwing's scent. The deputy informs the Clan that Ashfur wouldn't tell them where he was and he looked like he wasn't scared even though the patrol could kill him. Squirrelflight adds that Ashfur wouldn't care, since it wasn't his body. Leafstar asks Squirrelflight and her patrol to return to ThunderClan.
- While Rootspring is thinking about Bristlefrost's offer, Beekit and Beetlekit dart toward him before slowing down. The kits ask him who he is, and he hesitates, fearing that Dewspring and Nectarsong didn't want their kits to know about the cat who could see ghosts. He introduces himself as Rootspring, while the pair of kits realize that he can see ghosts. He braces himself for fear or amusement, but instead, Beekit tells him that his powers are really cool. He is surprised by this. Beetlekit wishes that he could see ghosts, and Beekit exclaims that she wants to be his apprentice. The two kits argue about which one gets Rootspring as a mentor. He wondered how he could think of leaving SkyClan.
