Chapter description[]
- Rootspring and Tree are in Leafstar's den. The yellow warrior begins to explain that he nor his father had seen any ghosts recently. Leafstar does not understand at first, but after hearing it once more, the leader realizes that that is bad. Rootspring explains further, stating that they were expecting ghosts at the vigil. The SkyClan leader retorts that they might have skipped the vigil because it was their own. The young tom explains their encounter with Cheddar the kittypet, and states that the kittypet reported that their Clanmates kept on fading, like they were scared. Leafstar is alarmed, and tells the two cats that they will report what they just said to the other Clan leaders.
- Rootspring finishes explaining it to the leaders. Tigerstar declares that they must accept that Bramblestar's ghost is gone. This triggers an argument between the medicine cats and leaders. Tigerstar abruptly suggests killing Ashfur since they are keeping Bramblestar's murderer prison for no reason. Mistystar states that it is not that simple. Harestar suggests that killing Ashfur would let Bramblestar back in to the body. Squirrelflight asks what would happen if he did not come back, and the ShadowClan leader simply mutters that they would know that he is lost. This causes the ginger she-cat to flinch badly, not wanting to imagine a world without her mate.
- Squirrelflight exclaims that the other leaders would kill a warrior to see if things might go back to normal. Rootspring supports this, exclaiming that Bramblestar should have more time. Tree agrees, and states that they will need the Sisters, as the mysterious she-cats knew more than the Clans did about the place where ghosts reside. Kestrelflight asks Tree how random cats knew more than the Clans about StarClan. The mediator patiently explains that their problem is about the ghost residence, not StarClan, and the Sisters know much more than the Clans about that. This leaves the medicine cats disappointed. Squirrelflight and Leafstar agree to send Spotfur, Bristlefrost, Rootspring, and Needleclaw to search for the Sisters, while the other leaders prohibit the Sisters from talking to their warriors or traveling on their territory.
