"The code has been broken before, in worse ways, and nothing like this has ever happened. There's only one cat responsible for this. We must find a way to fix it. If we don't, the living Clans might be lost forever."

Chapter description[]

Leafpool, alongside Firestar, Bluestar, and Tallstar, are at the heart of StarClan territory, attempting to peer through the pool that allows them to see the Clans. The tabby reflects on the past moons since she had joined the ranks of her ancestors, finding it strange to meet the cats she had only ever heard nursery tales about. Her thoughts drift to how happy she is, reunited with Firestar and Sandstorm, but also that she misses her sister, Squirrelflight. Beside her, Firestar sniffs at the obscured pool, stating that they still cannot see the five Clans. Leafpool recalls how she and Squirrelflight had watched their Clanmates previously and how her sister had returned to them via it. But now, the pool is covered with crisscrossing branches and vines, like a web.
The tabby voices her own concerns as Firestar questions if they will be able to connect with their living Clanmates again. Bluestar speaks up, telling them both to have faith as Firestar argues about the choice in cat they had chosen to go to the Clans. Bluestar states that they were meant to keep an eye on him as Firestar angrily notes they should have sent a different cat. Tallstar pipes up, starting to say that it did not matter who they chose but is cut off by the adamant ginger tom as questions if their lost connection to the Clans is a coincidence. Firestar mentions the issues of the Clans breaking the code and that is there fault to begin with, but the problem remains that there is at the present only one cat to blame for their current problems. Leafpool finds herself at a loss for words as she wonders if it is the end of StarClan's connection with the Clans and what other implications it may make.
