Chapter description[]
- As the Clans trek across a meadow, Squirrelpaw is happy to have Brambleclaw next to her. She thinks about the weather, and feels sore from stepping on the prickly ground. She notes all the scents she can smell, and her heart freezes when she sees a beech being shaken. Ravenpaw and Barley emerge from said beech, and Ravenpaw greets Firestar, asking why he's here as everyone stops to stare at him.
- Firestar runs up to greet his longtime friend, and catches him up on what's been going on in the forest. He then greets Barley as well, and Ravenpaw asks where they are going. He asks if they'll stay at the barn tonight, but Barley is doubtful, as he is worried that the Twolegs won't be happy seeing them all while getting straw for the cows. He instead suggests for them to shelter at the broken nest, and while Firestar wants to get to Highstones, agrees after Blackstar points out that they need prey.
- Ravenpaw says that he'll help them get settled, and everyone becomes excited at the thought of eating. The nest has stone walls to shelter everyone from the wind, but it has no roof, and Ashfoot and Webfoot talk about the place. As many cats either settle inside the nest or go hunting, Cinderpelt and Leafpaw check for injuries, and Leafpaw tells Squirrelpaw to grab some moss from outside.
- She grabs some and gives it to those who are thirsty, and she soon rests. The warriors return with prey, and Squirrelpaw is grateful to eat a plump rat given to her by Brambleclaw. Tallpoppy and Ferncloud talk about how great the broken nest is, and later, Brambleclaw returns with another piece of prey for Squirrelpaw. Firestar, curled up with Sandstorm, invites Ravenpaw to sleep with him, and he agrees to. He wonders how the Clans will find a new home, and Squirrelpaw believes StarClan will tell them. Leafpaw dips her head, but remains silent.
- Later, Squirrelpaw awakens in the sunlight to find Firestar standing on a fallen stone in the middle of the nest. He addresses the cats before him, stating they need to move on and get to Highstones. At once, numerous cats protest at the thought of abandoning a prey-rich place, including Blackstar, who is defiant. Brambleclaw states that he firmly believes their home isn't here, and Squirrelpaw points out that she and the other cats weren't sent to the sun-drown-place just to settle at the broken nest.
- When the other cats sent to the sun-drown-place agree, Leopardstar sides with them as well, citing the dogs. Tallpoppy's kits continue protesting, but their mother urges them on, and Ravenpaw decides to come with the cats as they travel to Highstones. Squirrelpaw shivers, knowing they won't reach Highstones by sundown if they slow down for the kits and elders. Ravenpaw inquires about ThunderClan's new deputy, but Firestar snaps at him that Graystripe is still the deputy, and he is not giving up on his friend.
- Later on, the Clans reach Highstones, which are shaded in blue and black, and the cats lay exhausted at the entrance to Mothermouth. Squirrelpaw notes that the leaders and medicine cats have gone inside to share with StarClan, wondering why the apprentices weren't allowed to go with them, and Leafpaw reminds her that no appretices were allowed. The leaders emerge, and while Squirrelpaw wants to hear what happened, her sister reminds her that it is meant to be private.
- Brambleclaw calls for Squirrelpaw, stating that they need to discuss where to go next. She follows him and finds the other cats sent on the quest sitting together, and Squirrelpaw sees the shadowy territory ahead of Highstones, wondering what they are doing. Brambleclaw asks the cats around him if they are certain that they want to go to the sun-drown-place and find Midnight, and everyone is uncertain. Stormfur is noticeably frustrated, and Squirrelpaw feels sympathy for him as the others debate the dying warrior sign.
- They worry that Mudfur was the dying warrior, and dread having to tell the Clans that they went the wrong way. Squirrelpaw stares at the sky, fretting that they badly messed up, but she sees a shooting star passing by and realizes that it is the dying warrior sign. The star heads toward the mountains, and they now know where they need to travel.
