"Thank you. I'll make sure Nightstar knows what you have done. There will be no grudges against you after this."
— Dawncloud thanking the rogue group for the prey they caught in Tigerclaw's Fury, chapter 4

Dawncloud is a small[6] pale ginger[7] tabby she-cat[6] with blue eyes.[8]

Dawncloud was a ShadowClan elder under Brokenstar's, Nightstar's and Tigerstar's leaderships in the forest territories. She was born as Dawnkit to Blizzardwing and Featherstorm alongside her brothers, Mosskit and Volekit. Her mother had a prior litter consisting of Raggedstar and Scorchwind, and her father sired Blackstar, Flintfang, and Fernshade in secret. After Mosspaw's death, Dawnkit and Volekit were apprenticed early, and she was renamed Dawnpaw with her older half-brother Blackfoot as her mentor. After earning her warrior name, Dawncloud became a queen and gave birth to Finchflight's kits, of which Swampkit and Blossomkit died under Brokenstar's rule. Dawncloud sided with Nightpelt and the exiled elders to overthrow Brokenstar. She joined StarClan after her death and was seen at Tigerstar's leadership ceremony.

In The Prophecies Begin arc[]

Into the Wild[]

Yellowfang: "And this is one of our elder queens, Dawncloud. Two of her kits died driving out WindClan."
Dawncloud: "I do not wish to lose any more of my kits."
—Yellowfang and Dawncloud about her kits Into the Wild, page 255
Dawncloud is an elderly queen of ShadowClan, forced to hunt and protect herself due to Brokenstar's brutality. She is one of Yellowfang's friends, when Yellowfang was still living in ShadowClan, and is against Brokenstar, the ShadowClan leader. It is revealed by Yellowfang that she had lost two kits in the battle with WindClan, and Dawncloud tells the ThunderClan patrol that she does not wish to lose any more kits. She then agrees to join the other cats in the group going up against Brokenstar.
After it is decided to attack ShadowClan and reclaim the abducted kits, Dawncloud tells Firepaw that there is no way to take them in secret, as Brokenstar will be expecting a ThunderClan assault. She tells the apprentice that the only way it will work is to charge at ShadowClan head-on, making sure to explain that this is their only hope. During the battle with ShadowClan, Dawncloud is the cat to alert Firepaw of Clawface, saying that he is about to attack. After warning Firepaw, she returns to battling against Brokenstar's cats.

Apprentices

Volekit, Dawnkit, Mosspaw, and Littlekit looking up to Brokenstar

Dawnkit is born to Featherstorm and Blizzardwing, along with her siblings Mosskit and Volekit. When her brother, Mosskit, is apprenticed early to Brokenstar, Dawnkit complains that she wants to be made an apprentice as well. Brokenstar promises that the kits will be apprenticed when they're as large as Mosspaw, and tells Blackfoot that he can mentor her. When Mosspaw is killed during training, she is apprenticed to Blackfoot as promised.
She sides against Yellowfang when the medicine cat is blamed for the deaths of Marigoldkit and Mintkit, telling the Clan that Yellowfang had refused to treat her wounds recently because she'd be wasting herbs.

In the Novellas[]

Tigerclaw's Fury[]

"He'd say, 'Pride won't stock the fresh-kill pile!' Tigerclaw, it's a generous offer, and we accept."
―Dawncloud accepting Tigerclaw's offer to hunt for ShadowClan Tigerclaw's Fury, chapter 4
Dawncloud is mentioned by Blackfoot, who is telling Tigerclaw that he had met her and Rowanberry while they were out hunting, and had informed him of the terrible sickness in ShadowClan. She is part of the patrol that runs into Tigerclaw, who is waiting for them. After he tells them that he and his group wish to hunt for the Clan, she steps forward and asks him whether they want to come back to the camp. Although Flintfang is suspicious of Tigerclaw and asks what Nightstar would say, Dawncloud retorts that her leader would say that pride wouldn't stock their fresh-kill pile. She continues that it is a generous offer, and that they accept.
The next day, Dawncloud, Flintfang, and Boulder meet with Tigerclaw again, and the others. She blinks warmly and thanks them, informing them that she will make sure Nightstar knows what they have done and there will be no grudges held against them after this. She leads the way back through the pines with the fresh-kill, her tail brushing against Stumpytail. Tigerclaw knows that they had been close friends as apprentices.
Rowanberry emerges from a den when the rogue cats enter the camp, saying that although Dawncloud had told them they were going to hunt for ShadowClan, she didn't expect them to deliver it themselves. Dawncloud pads over to the elderly ShadowClan leader when he emerges from branches telling him to look at the fresh-kill pile and they will all be fed that night.
When Tigerclaw summons his group of cats so they can go, Stumpytail glances at Dawncloud, as if reluctant to leave. After Runningnose calls a Clan meeting, Tigerclaw watches Stumpytail go over to sit beside Dawncloud. Once Tigerclaw and the others are a part of ShadowClan, Dawncloud and Stumpytail touch their noses together. At another Clan meeting, Runningnose spots a claw at the base of the rock, covered in shadowy stripes. Dawncloud gasps that it must be a sign from StarClan.

Blackfoot's Reckoning[]

«It didn't matter if they said he wasn't part of ShadowClan anymore. Dawncloud, Boulder, and Flintfang would always be his true Clanmates. Dawncloud, who had once been his apprentice! Loyal, steady Boulder! Flintfang, his own littermate!»
—Blackfoot about his Clanmates Blackfoot's Reckoning, chapter 9
Blackfoot hushes Dawnpaw, his apprentice, when she asks what's going on when Brokenstar calls a meeting. When Brokenstar announces Badgerpaw's apprenticeship early, he reflects how Dawnpaw's littermates—Volepaw and Mosspaw—died, though contributes their deaths as happening to any cat. When Blackfoot returns to ShadowClan, he reflects how Dawncloud, Boulder, and Flintfang will always be his true Clanmates. Rowanberry greets her brother and the other rogues, and comments how Dawncloud had told them they were going to hunt. Dawncloud urges Nightstar to eat.

Exile from ShadowClan[]

Ashfur: "We're with you."
Dawncloud: "Yes. Count us in."
—Ashfur and Dawncloud agreeing to help Nightpelt overthrow Brokenstar Exile from ShadowClan, page 157
In ShadowClan's camp, Dawnkit looks excitedly on with Volekit, Littlekit, and Mosspaw as Brokenstar calls for a Clan meeting. After her brother Mosspaw's death, she and Volekit are named apprentices before they are six moons old. Dawnpaw, Volepaw, and Littlepaw participate in a battle against WindClan, and their mother Featherstorm fears for their safety. Later, Volepaw hopes to become a warrior before his sister.
Frustrated with Brokenstar's leadership and the constant fighting, Dawncloud joins Nightpelt's group of exiled elders. She agrees to fight alongside Nightpelt, Ashfur, Yellowfang, and a ThunderClan patrol to overthrow Brokenstar. She and her ShadowClan Clanmates pretend to capture Yellowfang so Blackfoot will let them into camp. In the battle, Dawncloud fights against her former mentor Blackfoot and Whitestorm helps her. Dawncloud attends the Gathering as Nightpelt declares himself ShadowClan's newest leader.

In the Field Guides[]

The Ultimate Guide[]

At the end of Tigerstar's leader ceremony, Dawncloud is shown along Tallpoppy, Darkflower, and Cinderfur standing close together, and they watch with hopeful, anxious eyes. Tigerstar promises to lead ShadowClan back to the glory that Dawncloud and the other elders knew of.

Trivia[]

Interesting facts[]

  • While shown as alive in Tigerclaw's Fury,[21] which ends a day before the Gathering in which Tigerclaw is a newly-named leader of ShadowClan,[21][22] The Ultimate Guide depicts Dawncloud as deceased and present at Tigerclaw's leadership ceremony.[5] Given that Dawncloud is not present in the allegiances for A Dangerous Path, it is possible that she died the same day that Tigerclaw got his nine lives.[23] It is unsure if Dawncloud actually died the same day as Tigerclaw's leadership ceremony, or if this is an editor error, due to not having anything to either confirm or deny what actually happened to her.

Mistakes[]

  • Despite being a very young apprentice in Yellowfang's Secret,[25] Dawncloud is depicted as an elderly queen in Into the Wild.[6] In addition, Dawncloud is described as as one of Yellowfang's old friends in Into the Wild,[6] yet she hardly interacts with Dawncloud in Yellowfang's Secret. Dawncloud even went as far to side against Yellowfang when her loyalty was called into question.[26]
  • In Exile from ShadowClan, Dawncloud joins Nightpelt's group of exiled elders early on,[27][28] despite still being a member of ShadowClan as Dawnpaw[29] and having a litter of kits.[6]
  • In The Prophecies Begin, volume 1, she is depicted as ginger-and-white with a gray patch on her face and green eyes.[30]

Quotes[]

Volekit: "That's not fair!"
Dawnkit: "That's right! We're just as old as he is!"

Firepaw: "Is there any way of taking the kits without alerting the whole Clan?"
Dawncloud: "They are very closely guarded. Brokenstar will be expecting ThunderClan to try to take them. You won't be able to steal them in secret. Open attack is your only hope."
—Firepaw and Dawncloud discussing how to rescue the ThunderClan kits Into the Wild, page 257

"Look, do you see the fresh-kill pile? We will all fill our bellies tonight!"
―Dawncloud to Nightstar about the fresh-kill pile Tigerclaw's Fury, chapter 4
