Pinestar's Choice

Pineheart carries a squirrel towards Highrock, brushing past some brambles on his way to Doestar's den. He settles down beside the ill she-cat, declaring that he's brought it just for her. She shrugs him and Cloudberry away, looking at her deputy with unfocused eyes. The leader makes sure the fresh-kill pile is full, then simply bends to take a bite. He then leaves her alone to eat in peace.

However, a little while later, the reddish-brown tom returns to check on Doestar. Pineheart asks her if there is anything he can get to her, but she says no. He is alarmed when the leader rasps that Deerpaw was there just now, and asks Pineheart if he had seen her. The tom freezes at her question, as he remembers how Deerpaw was Doestar's littermate, who had died during her apprenticeship. He wonders if the apprentice had come to take Doestar to StarClan. Pineheart carefully responds that he doesn't see her now, and Doestar is relieved. The leader clarifies that Deerpaw was bugging her to go somewhere else, but she doesn't feel like leaving her nest today. Doestar adds that she might go with Deerpaw tomorrow. Pinestar feels a spark of alarm, as he doesn't want the cream she-cat to leave him.

Later, Deerpaw is mentioned when Pineheart is looking at Doestar's dead body in the clearing. He remembers the last conversation he'd had with Doestar two sunrises ago, and asks himself if Doestar had known that Deerpaw would come again for her so soon.

Interesting Facts

• Deerpaw was originally created by a fan, and was supposed to be Doestar's sister who died as an apprentice. Vicky liked this idea, as she made it canon.
• Vicky says that she died during a battle against RiverClan over Sunningrocks.
