Chapter description[]
- Hollypaw follows her Clanmates through the forest, moving slowly so WindClan does not detect their presence, and Brackenfur tells her to stay close. Suddenly, Mousewhisker cuts his eye on a bramble, and although it swells with blood, he affirms that he'll be alright. Hollypaw helps to guide Mousewhisker through the dark forest, and she notes that it's like being blind, wondering if this is how Jaypaw feels. The patrol reaches the Twoleg path, and Brambleclaw warns them to remain together; Hollypaw ponders about what WindClan demands out of ThunderClan, recalling how they help anyone who needs them despite what the other Clans think. She realizes that it's because of the warrior code, which ThunderClan hasn't been abiding by, but without warning, the patrol is ambushed by WindClan. Cats infiltrate the Twoleg nest, making Brambleclaw order his Clanmates to spread out before he is overwhelmed by the intruders. Much to Hollypaw's horror, Weaselfur and Emberfoot hungrily advance toward her, attacking her, but the apprentice remembers her training, slashing Weaselfur's muzzle and drawing blood. As Hollypaw continues battling Weaselfur, Mousewhisker engages in combat with Emberfoot, and Brackenfur duels Tornear. Seeing that she is distracted, Weaselfur attacks Hollypaw again, causing her to fall to the ground, and he pins her.
- However, the black she-cat maneuvers away from him in time, hooking his belly and biting his hind leg. Brackenfur praises her, and with his help, the two drive Weaselfur back into the shadows. Thornclaw fights two WindClan cats, while more WindClan cats swarm the heavily-exposed Cloudtail, and Mousewhisker tries to scramble away from Emberfoot in desperation. Brambleclaw quickly throws the two WindClan cats away from Cloudtail, and urges Hollypaw to go to Blackstar for reinforcements. Hollypaw questions how she'll be able to convince the ShadowClan leader, but Brambleclaw says that she needs to do it, and the two WindClan cats get up, desiring revenge. Hollypaw runs through the territory, determined to help ThunderClan, but not knowing where ShadowClan is located, as she is unfamiliar with the territory. The forest changes to pine trees, and ShadowClan stench indicates that she is crossing their border. Hollypaw continues traveling through the woods, trying to find where the camp is, and discovering a trail that leads to it. She walks closer, and Ivytail demands what she wants, to which Hollypaw replies that she needs to speak to Blackstar. Ivytail inquires to the whereabouts of her patrol, muttering that apprentices don't usually come alone to another Clan's camp, but Hollypaw repeats that she needs to see Blackstar. Ivytail snorts that she's planning an attack, but not having time for her banter, the black she-cat charges into the ShadowClan camp, asking for Blackstar. Upon noticing Tawnypelt, she pleads for help, revealing that WindClan is attacking and ThunderClan needs backup.
- Tawnypelt leads her to a gap in the brambles and into Blackstar's den, where she informs the leader that ThunderClan needs his assistance. Hollypaw explains what is happening, and he orders Tawnypelt to fetch Russetfur as Hollypaw mentions more details about the battle. Russetfur arrives, remarking that it is a well-planned battle and a serious situation. She adds that Onestar has forgotten that there are four Clans at the lake, but wonders if ShadowClan should risk its warriors for ThunderClan. Blackstar agrees to help, telling Russetfur to sort out a patrol, and Tawnypelt wishes to go with Hollypaw in order to provide as much assistance as she can. Thanking her, Hollypaw heads out, but trips over her kits. Tawnypelt scolds them for getting in the way, but fond, she states that they're eager to become warriors. She guides the kits to another queen, Snowbird, instructing her to keep watch and promising to be back soon. Hollypaw rushes out of her camp and up to Tawnypelt, and she takes her through the land ThunderClan gifted to ShadowClan a while back. She advises Hollypaw to stay low, crossing the stream, and she notes that there is no life in the Twoleg nests. In seconds, the two are in ThunderClan territory, and Hollypaw worries that they might be too late. However, a scream shows that the battle is still ongoing, and Tawnypelt and Hollypaw press onward. The latter sees ThunderClan struggling; Cloudtail is covered in blood and Brambleclaw and Mousewhisker work to drive back a line of WindClan warriors. Swiftly, Tawnypelt and Hollypaw charge into battle.
