"Jaypaw felt a surge of triumph. He'd been right. Sol had been seeking out ShadowClan. But fear also stirred in his belly. What if Sol's trail veered down into ShadowClan territory? Would Lionpaw and Hollypaw agree to cross the border with him? How would he find his way without them? He padded on, acutely aware of the ShadowClan scent line as it followed their path through the forest." |

Chapter description[]
- Jaypaw exclaims that they must find Sol to Lionpaw, which grabs the attention of Squirrelflight, who asks who he's talking about. Relieved, Jaypaw finds her to be warm and breathing well, indicating her recovery. She inquires about Lionpaw and Hollypaw, and Jaypaw reassures her that she's fine, encouraging her to open her eyes and mentioning that the sun is shining. Squirrelflight believes that StarClan is angry with them, even though Jaypaw knows that isn't true. Hollypaw wakes up, and upon seeing that her mother is awake, admits that she thought she was going to die. Squirrelflight promises to never leave her, and Brightheart appears, filled with hope that the warrior is alive. She offers to get Leafpool, but Jaypaw declines, not wanting to get her unless something serious actually happens. Squirrelflight questions the feathers and ferns, and when she learns her kits got them for her, she thanks them happily. Brightheart tells Squirrelflight to sleep, advising the apprentices to do the same, and Jaypaw is excited, believing that they have the perfect chance to find Sol. Out of earshot, Hollypaw asks what's on his mind, and Jaypaw blurts out that they must hunt down Sol, as he knew the sun would vanish. Lionpaw mews that they have to go with him, wondering if she's rested enough, and Hollypaw confirms that she is. However, she drags a shrew over, and begins to eat it.
- Lionpaw informs Jaypaw that no one is watching them, mentioning that Brightheart is looking after Squirrelflight, but he then says that Firestar is on Highledge. Jaypaw replies that he is asleep, detecting the leader's breathing, and he concludes that he'll have to sneak out through the dirtplace tunnel. Lionpaw questions if they really need to find Sol, but Jaypaw retorts that he might have answers to the prophecy and he must find out. Hollypaw finishes her shrew, burping loudly, and Jaypaw quiets her. They approach the thorn tunnel, but stop when Lionpaw comments that Brightheart is looking around camp. She glances back at Squirrelflight, and the siblings move forward again. Suddenly, they pause as Birchfall and Berrynose return through the thorn tunnel, boasting about beating WindClan, and Berrynose remarks that RiverClan is like furry, plump fish. Once they disappear, Jaypaw and his siblings make it through the dirtplace tunnel, and he leads them to a clump of brambles near the lake. He sniffs the air, trying to find Sol's scent, but no traces of it are left. Lionpaw reminds him that Sol was escorted to the WindClan border, but Jaypaw states that he wouldn't be there now, knowing he wants to see the other Clans, hoping he hasn't decided to visit RiverClan. He adds that Sol must have gone to ShadowClan, hiding that he is uncertain, and lying that he just knows he went there.
- Hollypaw protests that they can't go onto ShadowClan land, pointing out that she went only because there was an emergency, and adding that there weren't any strangers in their camp. Lionpaw sides with his sister, not wanting to invade ShadowClan territory and cause a battle. Hollypaw agrees, bringing up how they don't want to upset StarClan, and instead suggesting to venture near ShadowClan territory on the ThunderClan border. Lionpaw comments that it makes sense for a loner like Sol. He leads the way, and the forest changes from beech and oak to hazel, with Jaypaw noting that he can't even scent the lake anymore. The forest closes in on them, and twigs brush their pelts. Lionpaw announces that they've reached the edge of their territory. Jaypaw detects few ThunderClan scent markings, and crosses the border line, managing to pick up Sol's scent. The blind tom leads himself forward, following the path Sol has created near ShadowClan territory, suddenly picking up ShadowClan scent. Lionpaw reveals that they are at the top of ShadowClan's border, and Jaypaw is confident, but fears Sol's trail heads into their rival Clan's territory; he continues to walk through the land, excited. However, the scent trail stops, making Jaypaw flare up with panic.
- He wishes to explore past ShadowClan's border, but Hollypaw dashes away, returning seconds later and reporting a tortoiseshell piece of fur that belongs to Sol. Shocked, Jaypaw asks where she found it, and she adds that was in the grass, which is crushed. Lionpaw remarks that it leads away from ShadowClan, but his brother doesn't care about his incorrect guess, instead trying to pick up more traces of Sol with no success. Hollypaw takes the lead, but she cuts her nose, causing blood to well on it. Jaypaw then realizes that it's getting dark, and regrets exhausting Hollypaw with their search, though Lionpaw keeps pushing onward. He proposes resting to his siblings, beginning to feel tired from all their trekking and comparing to being a normal apprentice. The gray tabby asks Hollypaw if she sees Lionpaw, and she says that he's ahead, having discovered a Twoleg nest. They join him, and Lionpaw states that it's abandoned, with Hollypaw adding that there's Twoleg scent. The three slowly inch forward, and Jaypaw struggles to build an image of the forest in his head, finding it quiet with the night fallling. The ground changes to stone, and Lionpaw comments that they are now inside the Twoleg nest, but it's empty. Jaypaw is disappointed, but Hollypaw turns around, and a voice asks if they're looking for him.
