Leafstar: "You've picked up SkyClan hunting techniques really quickly. Are you glad you joined the Clan?"

Egg: "It's great, bringing prey for the fresh-kill pile. And Sharpclaw's a really good teacher. I've learned so many battle moves! If that fox comes back, it'd better watch out!"

Egg is scented hunting around SkyClan territory, and later the warriors find him. Leafstar notices his strong legs and haunches, and asks if he wants to join SkyClan, but he runs away, frightened by them.

Later, he is spotted in SkyClan territory, where he is confronted by Cherrytail. He tells the cats that he changed his mind and wishes to join the Clan. Leafstar accepts willingly, though wonders why he changed his decision so quickly. During his apprentice ceremony, he is given the apprentice name of Eggpaw, however he chooses to keep his current name, like Stick, Cora, and the other Twolegplace cats. This briefly worries Leafstar about him not understanding the importance of Clan names. Sharpclaw is chosen to be his mentor.

On a hunting patrol, he is asked to stalk a nearby squirrel by his mentor, but forgets to stay downwind of the prey, though he does manage to kill it with an impressive leap. When the others are keen on catching a pigeon, however, he yowls a cry of warning. Leafstar questions him, and he explains to her about a fox that he scented near his den. Sharpclaw adds that it's nothing to worry about to Leafstar, and that the trail led out of the territory. Egg argues, revealing that Sharpclaw told him earlier that the fox would stay permanently, and it would be better for him to join SkyClan for his own safety. Saying this reveals to Leafstar that Sharpclaw lied to Egg about the fox to coerce him into joining SkyClan.

Later, when the cats are getting ready to go on the Dodge patrol, Egg begs his mentor for him to come, saying that he's as big as most of the warriors. Sharpclaw asks Leafstar if Egg had permission to stay with them, and Leafstar replies yes, so Egg goes on the patrol. Egg is determined and eager to prove his loyalty to SkyClan. He becomes close friends with Rockshade on the journey. He shows off impressive hunting skills while catching a fish for the patrol.
