Whilst looking for a kittypet named Pancakes, Spotfur and Bristlefrost encounter and flee from a dog. After they have escaped, two kits run up to them, and tell them that the dog's name is Spike and that he is friendly toward cats. When Spotfur asks why Spike smells like flowers, Eggs explains that his Twolegs wash him. Bristlefrost asks if a cat called Pancakes lives around here, and Eggs says that he used to, but does not anymore. The other kit introduces himself as Bacon and says that they are his kits, and Eggs says that he is named Eggs.

Spotfur tells them that they are looking for some friends, to which Eggs responds that he and Bacon can be their friends. Spotfur explains that they are looking for old friends, not new ones, causing Eggs to look crestfallen. Spotfur asks them if they have seen any big, furry she-cats, but Eggs says that they have not. Spotfur leans closer and asks about toms, and Bristlefrost adds that they might have funny names like Stone or Branch. Eggs says that they know a tom named Leaf, who stopped there and played tag with them once. Spotfur asks if Leaf told them where he was from or where he was going, to which Eggs replies that he said he left a group of cats who were heading for the river to make camp for the warm season. Eggs nods toward a fern-pelted hillside, saying that Leaf said it was that way.

Some time afterward, the Clan cats are still following the kits' directions, but they have not found the river yet. Needleclaw frets that they should have found the river by now, and wonders if the kits were right about the direction they said Leaf was headed. The Clan cats climb a slope to see a huge Twolegplace crowding the valley below them, with no river in sight. Needleclaw says that the kits must have been wrong, but Rootspring says that they may have misunderstood them. Needleclaw swishes her tail, saying that they should have never listened to the kits. Rootspring insists that they should keep going, as this is the only lead they have.
