"Once I started to think more carefully about how important this book was as a conclusion to the twenty-three preceding stories, I realized that each death would be far more significant than just one more admission to StarClan. The fate of each character during the battle had to Mean Something, and also reflect on the rest of their life leading up to that moment."
Victoria Holmes in Erin Hunter's Confidential Notes 1: The Curtain Falls: Choosing Which Cats Would Die

Erin Hunter's Confidential Notes 1: The Curtain Falls: Choosing Which Cats Would Die is the first of a series of three essays written by Victoria Holmes that was featured in the expanded edition of The Last Hope.[1]

Detailed summary[]

Vicky begins by explaining how she knew the Great Battle would result in numerous deaths, but she wanted to deaths to have meaning and purpose. She knew Firestar would have to die as the conclusion to his story from Into the Wild, and she decided on Spottedleaf's death early on to bring out the very best of her character by sacrificing her place in StarClan to save Sandstorm. Hollyleaf died heroically to prove herself to ThunderClan after killing Ashfur, and she hopes the two do not meet in StarClan.
Vicky blames Ferncloud's death on the readers for complaining throughout the years of the queen's permanent place in the nursery without much danger. Ferncloud was placed in the thick of the battle purposefully. Finally, Mousefur was given one final send-off fighting alongside Longtail before her triumphant death.
