"I deliberately didn't go into any explanations for her strange powers. I'd like to say that I wanted to be as elusive as Midnight herself, giving an air of absolute wisdom while my readers struggled to understand the truth. But to be honest, I didn't have the faintest idea what her backstory was. I figured that Midnight was pretty old, had traveled widely, and was a gifted linguist—but that's all. I didn't get the feeling she'd met with StarClan, or been a cat once, or had any great emotional investment in the fate of the Clans."
Victoria Holmes in Erin Hunter's Confidential Notes 3: The Truth About Midnight

Erin Hunter's Confidential Notes 3: The Truth About Midnight is the third of a series of three essays written by Victoria Holmes that was featured in the expanded edition of The Last Hope.[1]

Detailed summary[]

Midnight the badger was meant to just be a surprise ending for Midnight, the first book of The New Prophecy arc, as the questing cats learn of the fate of their forest from a creature who is typically their enemy. However, Vicky knew she would eventually return after seeing how Cherith wrote her.
Midnight is a mysterious creature who was mostly unknown to Vicky. She deliberately did not elaborate on her powers, and only knew she was very old and a seasoned traveler, but without connection to StarClan or especially interested with the Clans. However, during Omen of the Stars, Vicky fell in love with her again as this mysterious character who knew more than StarClan. She speculated which side of the Great Battle Midnight would be on and knew she would appear in the prologue with the Ancients, StarClan, and Rock. It came naturally that Midnight would know Rock since they both contained a wealth of ancient knowledge. Vicky reveals that Midnight is indeed a ghost like Rock.
