"When Brokenstar sent me here—when he exiled us—I thought my life was over. It wasn't just me, either. The elders, like Archeye and Hollyflower, thought they were too old to be of use to ShadowClan. But look at how all the cats here have worked together! We all have something to contribute. We all take care of each other. This is what a Clan should be. That's what I've realized. And it's what Brokenstar doesn't know."

Detailed plot description[]

Brokenstar, ShadowClan's leader, has been warping his Clan for constant battle against WindClan after the death of his father Raggedstar. Instead of hunting, cats are instead encouraged to be constantly training for battle, and kits are being named apprentices before they are six moons old. Nightpelt, an elder and Brokenstar's former mentor, is dissatisfied with these changes. He was forced to become an elder early due to his persistent cough. One day, Brokenstar calls for the elders to be exiled from their camp since they can no longer contribute to the Clan. Nightpelt begrudgingly agrees, and he, Yellowfang, and Runningnose lead the elders out of camp. The group finds a sheltered hillside surrounded by ferns to make camp, though Yellowfang encourages Nightpelt to hunt when he breaks off into a coughing fit. At times, Nightpelt feels useless because of his cough, but vows to do his best to keep the elders safe. While standing guard that night, Clawface, Nightpelt's brother, visits, and Clawface agrees with Brokenstar's decisions since it makes ShadowClan strong. While Nightpelt regrets not being able to help as much, Archeye, Hollyflower, and Poolcloud help him see that he's still a valued member of their group.
Featherstorm arrives to their camp in distress with news of her son Mosspaw's death in a training exercise, and Brokenstar naming her two other kits, Dawnpaw and Volepaw, apprentices before sentencing Featherstorm to join the elders. While Featherstorm grieves, Runningnose tells Nightpelt that Brokenstar refuses to listen to his medicine cats. As leaf-bare finally arrives, Nightpelt runs into Clawface on a ShadowClan battle patrol preparing to attack WindClan and kits are included in the patrol. Nightpelt returns to his camp and explains what he saw, but insists he didn't see Volepaw or Dawnpaw. The next morning, Ashfur arrives with news that the apprentices survived the fight but he was forced to retire when he questioned Brokenstar, and more cats join soon after. Poolcloud is gravely injured after a fox attack, and Nightpelt rushes to ShadowClan's camp to retrieve the medicine cats. However, they are too late as Poolcloud has already died, though Yellowfang insists it wasn't Nightpelt's fault. The exiled cats hold a vigil the following morning, and Nightpelt is surprised that the others look to him to lead them.
Newleaf has arrived and Nightpelt runs into Littlepaw and Volepaw while hunting. When he learns the two apprentices plan to have their warrior assessments fighting rats at the carrionplace, Nightpelt goes with them as he recalls how deadly they can be and Foxheart's death. Nightpelt fails to deter Brokenstar from commencing with the attack, and Littlepaw and Volepaw barely manage kill one rat. More rats swarm the apprentices, and Clawface and Nightpelt intervene. At the elders' camp, Runningnose and Clawface bring Volepaw, who was cast aside by Brokenstar for his leg injury from the rat battle. Runningnose hopes Volepaw can find a second chance with Nightpelt, and the medicine cat plans to tell his Clanmates that Volepaw died from an infection. Volepaw heals from his injuries, but worries he's useless to the group. Nightpelt teaches him how to hunt, something his mentor Brokenstar failed to teach him, when they come across Brightflower grieving the death of her kits. Brokenstar claims that Yellowfang killed them, though Nightpelt is skeptical.
ShadowClan continues to battle WindClan and eventually is successful in driving them out from their territory. Nightpelt is distraught to see what his Clan has become, and he becomes convinced that he must fight to save his Clan. Cinderfur and a few others are skeptical about breaking the warrior code by challenging their leader. Three days later, Nightpelt catches Clawface stealing four ThunderClan kits so they can become ShadowClan apprentices, and Nightpelt urges the other elders to help him attack Brokenstar. Ashfur and Dawncloud agree to fight with him, and Yellowfang returns with news of a ThunderClan patrol arriving to rescue their kits. They meet up with Whitestorm and his patrol and agree to work together. Nightpelt, Ashfur, and Dawncloud trick Blackfoot into letting them into camp with Yellowfang as their prisoner. Yellowfang attacks Brokenstar and the camp escalates into battle. ThunderClan's patrol arrives to help just as Nightpelt is fearing the worst. Brokenstar reveals he killed Raggedstar and Brightflower's kits, and the Clan turns on him. Brokenstar and his allies flee the camp, and ThunderClan returns home with their kits. As the Clan rebuilds, the Clan decides that Nightpelt should lead them. Thought Nightpelt is unsure, he accepts and names Cinderfur his deputy. He and Runningnose go to the Moonstone so Nightpelt can receive his nine lives, but Raggedstar tells Nightpelt that he won't be able to. StarClan still recognizes Brokenstar as leader and StarClan cannot choose the next leader. Runningnose encourages Nightpelt that ShadowClan still needs his leadership, and Nightpelt resolves to protect ShadowClan until its true leader arrives.
