"Dovepaw secretly thought the two kits and Jayfeather had been Briarlight's greatest allies; they alone accepted her entirely as she was now. Millie's gaze was still clouded with grief, and pity flashed in every warrior's eyes when they saw the young cat hauling herself across the camp. Mousefur could not even look at Briarlight. She still blamed herself for the tragedy that had killed her best friend and crippled the young warrior."

Chapter description[]

Firestar finishes Briarpaw's warrior ceremony, honoring her courage and spirit. He names her Briarlight while Blossomfall and Bumblestripe start cheering for their sibling. Dovepaw notices Graystripe and Millie comforting each other with pride in their eyes along with a small amount of grief. Dovepaw avoids staring at Briarlight's hind legs, remembering that every cat was exhausted after clearing the leftover debris. She recalls how she had reoccuring dreams of the tree falling, but instead of Briarlight being under the tree, it would be her sister, Ivypaw.
Whitewing interrupts her thoughts, asking if she is alright. The pale gray apprentice states that she is glad that Briarlight got her warrior name, while her mother comments that Briarlight is a true warrior as any. Dovepaw remembers how Jayfeather had created exercises for her to stay healthy while the other ThunderClan cats sacrificed their own meals to make sure Briarlight was fed. The ThunderClan she-cat states that Jayfeather, Cherrykit, and Molekit were the only cats who didn't feel sympathetic every time they spotted the injured warrior. She notes how Mousefur couldn't even look at her.
Molekit climbs up Briarlight's spine to reach her shoulders while chanting her name, causing Millie to warn him to be cautious. Briarlight wagers that she can carry both kits, but Millie crossly notifies the kits that they shouldn't even try, prompting Graystripe to remind his mate to let them have fun. Molekit says that they will be warriors soon, but Briarlight cheerfully reminds them that they aren't even apprentices yet.
Whitewing reminds Dovepaw that they need to gather moss for Mousefur and Purdy's new den. After getting Toadstep, Rosepetal, and Ivypaw to help them, the patrol set off. Whitewing states that they should look for swan feathers as Purdy, Mousefur, and Briarlight would love soft nests. The snowy white senior warrior lets Ivypaw and Toadstep work together while leaving Rosepetal and Dovepaw to search. The ThunderClan apprentice heads upstream while the warrior heads downstream. While chasing a feather, Dovepaw encounters Lionblaze. He tells her that there are more ShadowClan scents along the border, asking her if she had heard anything with her powers.
Dovepaw states that if she had heard anything important, she would've told him, causing Lionblaze to reply that she may not think an important thing is important. The pale gray she-cat retorts that she doesn't tell him how to use his power. A moment later, Ivypaw pops out, causing Lionblaze to leave. The silver tabby she-cat asks what the golden tabby warrior had wanted, but Dovepaw just replies that he was just checking on her. Ivypaw asks her why she would know what ShadowClan was doing and calls her bluff when she quickly responds that she doesn't know. The silver tabby apprentice goes on a rant of how Firestar never asks about her training, how Dovepaw always has conversations with Lionblaze, and how the senior warriors take so much interest in an ordinary apprentice. The pale gray she-cat states that it's too complicated, prompting Ivypaw to leave after stating that she has her own secrets. Connecting the dots, Dovepaw realizes that her sister is referring to her dreams with the StarClan cat.
Rosepetal and Toadstep leave Dovepaw and Ivypaw with their moss as they hurry to Brambleclaw, wanting new tasks as they leave Dovepaw and Ivypaw to finish the den. Mousefur and Purdy enter the dens, with the latter complimenting how good the nests look while the former complains that the old ones are better since they smell of Longtail. Purdy signals to Dovepaw and Ivypaw for them to leave the elders, so Ivypaw enjoys a mouse with Rosepetal while Dovepaw checks up on Briarlight in the medicine den.
Entering the den, the ThunderClan apprentice spots Jayfeather letting Briarlight leave after eating her medicine. The injured she-cat greets Dovepaw, commenting that the exercises are hard work. The pale gray she-cat greets Jayfeather, who immediately senses that she is upset. Dovepaw asks if she can share the prophecy with Ivypaw, which is met with an immediate no from Jayfeather. She explains that it is very hard to stay friends with her as Ivypaw is getting jealous of all the attentions she is receiving.
Jayfeather goes into detail on how he was the first one to figure out the prophecy, and he and Lionblaze never told anyone else. Dovepaw asks what happened with Hollyleaf, so the blind tabby tom tells her that his sister could not cope with not being part of the prophecy as well as another reason. When the medicine cat doesn't say more, Dovepaw gets frustrated with all the secrets in her life, promising to herself that she would tell Ivypaw if she could.
