Chapter description[]

Ivypaw shivers as she stands in the meadow. She sees that the wind has torn the flowers from the ground. She feels the ground beneath her legs shaking as the horses run along the edge of the meadow. She hears the wind rushing over the dull and dry grass, as it brushes her fur in the wrong direction. She sees a dark rump with a thick, bushy tail appear above the grass. She runs over and greets Hawkfrost when he turns to her. She tells him with relief that she thought he wasn't coming anymore, because she had been looking for him for a long time. As he sits up and looks at Ivypaw with half-closed eyes, he says that luckily she found him today. Ivypaw asks Hawkfrost if he would like to teach her something new. Her mentor Cinderheart was said to be impressed with the progress she had made during the training. Hawkfrost yawns and stretches his shoulders and spine as Ivypaw asks him to teach her a new fighting move. Hawkfrost asks her if she didn't get enough moves to practice on. She says she has already learned them all and pleads with him hopefully again. Hawkfrost stands up tiredly and asks if she bothers her clanmates so much. Ivypaw meows that her clanmates don't teach her any interesting moves.
Ultimately, Hawkfrost decides to teach her a combat move. He orders Ivypaw to pay close attention. He demonstrates the move at her, and Ivypaw falls onto her back. She also wants to try out the move, and when she tries it on Hawkfrost, nothing happens to the tom. She tries again, but again nothing happens. Hawkfrost turns around and asks if she's done anything yet. Frustrated, Ivypaw backs away and tries again. Still the warrior does not flinch. Ivypaw tilts her head and asks him how he did that. He shows her that she had to hit his tendon with her paw. He tells her to do it fast and hard, and to hit both paws at the same time. Excitedly she squats down, looks intently at the spot and then jumps. She eventually takes down Hawkfrost. She takes advantage of her advantage and uses her shoulders to push him aside. He falls back to the ground. She throws herself at him and pins him to the ground. Hawkfrost compliments her, telling her to use the advantage of surprise every time. Ivypaw tries again and she succeeds. When Hawkfrost tells her she did a good job, she is proud of herself. Hawkfrost admits that maybe they can make something of her after all. Ivypaw confirms his words proudly.
A little further on, another cat appears in the grass and watches. Ivypaw asks Hawkfrost who that cat is. The cat disappears when she asks. Hawkfrost shrugs and explains that he mentioned her to some friends. He thinks it will be one of them. Ivypaw shakes her head and says that they would probably want to learn from her. Hawkfrost encourages her to do the moves twice in a row. Ivypaw says yes and tells Hawkfrost that she wants to be able to do the move perfectly when she shows it to Dovepaw. Hawkfrost asks Ivypaw who Dovepaw is. Ivypaw says it's her sister and asks if Hawkfrost didn't remember her.
Ivypaw jumps up and hits Hawkfrost's hind legs. He falls on his side in surprise.
Ivypaw says that all the senior warriors think Dovepaw is the best student ever, and they always ask her things, as if she knows something no other cat would. Hawkfrost asks her between licks if she really does that. Ivypaw says thinking Dovepaw knows something she doesn't, but she can't figure out what it is. Ivypaw says she wishes her sister didn't act so special; she always kept her ears pricked, as if no one else in the Clan could keep them safe. When Hawkfrost finishes grooming himself, he asks Ivypaw if she planned to tell Dovepaw about him. Ivypaw replies that she intended to, but never got the chance. She also says she doesn't want to tell her anymore. As Hawkfrost pulls random leaves out of the grass, he says that it's a good idea and that he thinks she would like to learn all of Ivypaw's moves. Ivypaw bares her claws as he says that. Hawkfrost tells her it's her littermate, but not her ultrasound. Finally, Ivypaw gives in. She wonders out loud why she would let Dovepaw copy things from her.
Ivypaw wakes up stiff in her nest. She remembers everything she had dreamed. Dovepaw is snoring a little further away. She lies there for a while and thinks some more, and then goes outside because her mentor Cinderheart calls her. When Ivypaw comes outside, she sees Cinderheart beckoning Blossomfall and Bumblestripe with her tail. Her mentor announces that they will train together today. Blossomfall, yawning, asks if they should train Ivypaw. Cinderheart says again that they will train together. Bumblestripe indignantly says that they are no longer students. Firestar jumps from the rock into the clearing. Blossomfall already guesses that it will be a new way of training. Firestar stopped to tell her that there was nothing wrong with trying something new. Blossomfall contradicts him. Firestar gives her a few reasons why this method is not a problem. He asks her if they would rather fight to keep their paws agile.
