"It just seems like a waste of training for [Leafpool] to turn her back on it. She knows so much, and sometimes I feel that I know so little. The Clan still needs her, Lionblaze. Maybe more than ever."

Chapter description[]

Lionblaze and Jayfeather are by the abandoned Twoleg nest to collect herbs and discuss Tigerstar; a patrol passes nearby. Jayfeather asks his brother if Tigerstar has visited him, and Lionblaze replies that he has not. They gather some borage, and Jayfeather thinks that Breezepelt has been recruited because of the attack by the Moonpool and how he always knew about their parentage. Lionblaze wonders why Tigerstar wanted Breezepelt, and Jayfeather thinks that Tigerstar needs warriors, and he is exploiting doubts because he knows that most are too loyal. They also agree that Tigerstar is using kinship, which would explain Tigerheart's battle moves and his scouting the border. Jayfeather warns that they cannot tell others yet and that they should just observe cats. They continue discussing possible trainees and realize that Hawkfrost is likely to also be recruiting cats. Jayfeather says that they should go back to the camp, and Lionblaze asks if he is going to take an apprentice soon. He says that he will not as long as Leafpool is there, and, not wanting to be sentimental, he continues that she is skilled, and it would be a waste when the Clan needs her.
In the camp, Sorreltail tells Jayfeather that Littlecloud has arrived, and he thinks that Littlecloud has probably come to see the tree damage. He tells the ShadowClan tom that Briarpaw is Briarlight now, and, seeing Flametail, thinks that the thoughts of Tigerheart's brother might provide clues. As he tells them about how well Briarlight is doing, he wonders what Flametail is thinking. They join Kestrelflight, Mothwing, and Willowshine and joke around with each other, but Jayfeather is worried because of Tigerstar. He wonders if any of the medicine cats have been recruited by the Dark Forest, but tries to dismiss the thought. Littlecloud asks Jayfeather about Leafpool, and the older tom murmurs that some mistakes echo forever.
As they arrive at the Moonpool, Jayfeather hears no signs of ancient cats and silently apologizes for breaking Rock's stick. He thinks that Flametail is likely to know more about Tigerheart and, touching his nose to the water, he enters Flametail's dream. The orange tom greets Yellowfang, but the she-cat catches Jayfeather watching. He growls that she does not know everything, and instead of lecturing him, she asks what he knows since even StarClan has been troubled. He states that Tigerstar is training warriors through dreams to fight against the Clans. Yellowfang is worried, and Jayfeather continues that he does not know how many Dark Forest cats are with Tigerstar. She is shocked that he thinks that Flametail is being trained, and he replies that they do not know who to trust—Tigerheart has been crossing their border, and Breezepelt attacked him. Hollow with dread, he asks what they should do, and Yellowfang says that they must go to the Dark Forest.
