Chapter description[]
- Dovepaw prepares to fight ShadowClan; Blackstar and Firestar are already facing each other. As the battle erupts, she is overwhelmed by the chaos and bloodshed, and she takes on Dawnpelt, who chases her as she struggles to run on the slippery ground. Lionblaze helps her, and she joins Ivypaw in fighting Starlingpaw and Pinepaw while Foxleap swipes at Crowfrost; Ivypaw fiercely bites Starlingpaw. Brackenfur and Thornclaw tell them that Brambleclaw told them to outflank them by going to ShadowClan's woods instead, as they are more accustomed to fighting in the forest. Dovepaw races after her Clanmates while watching the battle, agonizingly aware of all the pain, fear, and chaos of the cats fighting. Lionblaze instructs her to quickly climb a tree and nudges her up. Blackstar sees the golden tabby and asks where everyone else is, before seeing ThunderClan cats in the trees. Dovepaw drops down onto Owlclaw at Thornclaw's signal, and her Clanmates have also pinned different ShadowClan cats.
- Dovepaw then catches sight of Tigerheart fighting Toadstep, and she immediately wants to help her Clanmate, but then wonders if she can hurt her friend. Relieved, she sees Foxleap push Tigerheart away, and she turns around to help Sorreltail fight Smokefoot. Dovepaw sees Ivypaw viciously and skillfully battling Starlingpaw, but she panics when she sees Tigerheart approaching her sister. However, the tom stops, and he meets Ivypaw's gaze and nods. Dovepaw is not relieved and instead almost jealous, and Dovepaw wonders if Ivypaw and Tigerheart have been meeting each other in secret and if that is the reason the two sisters have grown more distant. She tries to wave the thought away and continues fighting; a cat then yowls, and she sees Russetfur and Firestar ferociously fighting. Lionblaze drags her off of Firestar, and the leader collapses, bleeding heavily.
