"A small part of me wants to say, "No. I've risked my life too much already." It wants to say, "It's not fair to ask me to do more...especially now that I've finally found my paws in RiverClan." But I'm not going to say that. Not to Oakheart. Not to StarClan. And not to myself. I'll do anything to ensure RiverClan's survival. And if I have to face this unknown danger...I'll face it loyal to my Clan."
— Feathertail's thoughts when she is chosen for a new prophecy in A Shadow in RiverClan, pages 203-204

Feathertail is a slender,[15] silver[16] tabby[17] she-cat[13] with sky[15]-blue eyes,[13] fur as soft as cloud,[18] a plumy tail[19] like smoke,[18] and a broad face.[20]

Feathertail was a RiverClan warrior under Leopardstar's leadership in the forest territories. Featherkit was born to Graystripe of ThunderClan and Silverstream of RiverClan alongside her brother, Stormkit. However, her mother died during the kitting, and after being temporarily fostered by Goldenflower in ThunderClan, Graystripe took his kits to RiverClan where they were fostered by Mosspelt. As an apprentice, Featherpaw was mentored by Mistyfoot, and after being held prisoner with other half-Clan cats by Tigerstar, she, along with Stormpaw and Mistyfoot, escaped to ThunderClan where her temporary mentor became Sandstorm. She fought in the battle against BloodClan before returning to RiverClan.

Following Tigerstar's defeat, Feathertail became a warrior and befriended Sasha when the former rogue joined RiverClan with her kits; however, she broke ties with Sasha after finding out about her relationship with Tigerstar. When she received a dream from Oakheart, Feathertail journeyed on a quest to the sun-drown-place and grew close with Crowpaw on the journey. Thereafter, when Feathertail was revealed as the silver cat destined to save the Tribe from Sharptooth, she died dislodging a stalactite from the cave roof, killing Sharptooth in the process. Mourning her death, Crowpaw asked to be named Crowfeather in her honor. She ascended to StarClan and reunited with Silverstream, and she also resided in the Tribe of Endless Hunting. She watched over Leafpool and convinced Squirrelflight to raise her kits, loving them as if they were her own. She gave Bramblestar and Mistystar one of their nine lives, and later ventured into the Dark Forest to defeat Ashfur.

The Prophecies Begin

"The she-kit is just like her mother, every bit as beautiful, and with the same temper! She gives her den mother quite a bit of trouble, but every cat loves her. Especially Crookedstar."
―Graystripe to Fireheart about Featherkit Rising Storm, chapter 14
Featherkit is born to Silverstream and Graystripe, along with her brother, Stormkit. Her mother dies after losing too much blood while kitting and the kits are taken to ThunderClan, where they are nursed by Goldenflower. However, RiverClan demands the kits for their mother's Clan, so Graystripe leaves ThunderClan to be with them in RiverClan. He eventually realizes he is loyal to his birth Clan and leaves when exiled, while Featherkit and Stormkit remain in RiverClan. Featherpaw becomes an apprentice with Mistyfoot as her mentor, but she, Stormpaw, Stonefur, and Mistyfoot are taken prisoner by Tigerstar, who keeps them in an old fox den, making them half-starved.
Battle against BloodClan (TDH)

Featherpaw fighting in the battle against BloodClan.

They are brought out to be killed, but Stonefur fights to protect the apprentices, dying in the process. Firestar, Ravenpaw, and Graystripe rescue Featherpaw, Stormpaw, and Mistyfoot, taking them to ThunderClan. Featherpaw fights in the battle against BloodClan with LionClan and along with the other apprentices, kills the BloodClan deputy, Bone. After the battle is won, Featherpaw, Stormpaw, and Mistyfoot return to RiverClan.

The New Prophecy

"Think you have nine lives, do you? I saved you once... Don't make me save you again."
―Feathertail to Crowpaw as she is dying Moonrise, page 271
Now a warrior, Feathertail receives a prophecy from StarClan to save the Clans. Stormfur joins her out his protectiveness, and she travels with Brambleclaw, Squirrelpaw, Tawnypelt, and Crowpaw to the sun-drown-place to find Midnight. Despite Crowpaw's prickly attitude, Feathertail manages to reach his soft side and the two developed feelings for each other. They reach the sun-drown-place and meet Midnight, who is revealed to be a badger, and she tells them that Twolegs are going to destroy the forest, and that the Clans must find a new home. During the journey back, they cut through the mountains where they meet the Tribe of Rushing Water, who are being hunted by a beast named Sharptooth. The Tribe believes Stormfur is the cat prophecized to save them, but when Crowpaw is cornered by Sharptooth, Feathertail proves herself to be the chosen cat, impaling Sharptooth with a falling stalactite and sacrificing her life to do so. Now walking in StarClan and with the Tribe of Endless Hunting, Feathertail visits Leafpool in her dreams to help Willowpaw's StarClan part of the medicine cat training and encourages Leafpool's relationship with Crowfeather.

"I've seen how you are with Breezepelt. The Crowfeather I knew had so much love to give. Why have you been withholding love from your son?"
―Feathertail to Crowfeather in his dream Crowfeather's Trial, page 197
In Crowfeather's Trial, Crowfeather witnesses Feathertail's death again in a dream, which solidifies the fact that he never got over the loss. He often reminisces about her and how he loved her more than any other cat—losing her has stopped him from loving anyone else out of fear. In an attempt to get Crowfeather to listen, Ashfoot brings him to meet Feathertail in his dream. She tells him she's missed him, but is troubled by what she sees; Feathertail urges Crowfeather to change the way he acts with Breezepelt and to be true to himself. She saves his life by leading Yew to an unconscious Crowfeather before he could freeze to death.

"They're perfect. Crowfeather would be so proud. These kits are more precious than you can possibly know. Cats will speak of them for many seasons to come. They must stay in ThunderClan, for all the Clans' sakes, with a mother and father who can be proud of them, who can share them with their Clanmates to be raised up as strong, loyal warriors. I know how much Leafpool loves these kits, but you must be their mother and raise them in ThunderClan with your head held high."
―Feathertail to Squirrelflight about Leafpool's kits Leafpool's Wish, chapter 9
In Leafpool's Wish, Feathertail appears to Squirrelflight in a dream after the birth of Leafpool and Crowfeather's kits half-Clan kits, Hollykit, Lionkit, and Jaykit. Stand-Alone Manga

«I make myself a promise, there on the spot. I'm going to let go of the past. Let myself become fully part of RiverClan. And defend and protect every cat in it.»
—Feathertail's thoughts A Shadow in RiverClan, page 188
In A Shadow in RiverClan, Feathertail struggles to trust Leopardstar and her Clanmates after they supported Tigerstar who almost allowed hers and Stormfur's deaths. However, she questions Leopardstar's intentions when she and Mistyfoot mentor them instead. Feathertail breaks ties with Sasha when she learns Tigerstar is their father, but promises to keep her secret when she leaves RiverClan out of fear of retribution against her kits for their parentage. Ceremonies

Lives granted

The following is a list of gifts Feathertail has granted during nine lives ceremonies:

Personality

Feathertail is very close to her father Graystripe[24] and her brother Stormfur,[25] who are protective of her.[26][27] She is suspicious of her RiverClan Clanmates, and cannot trust them after Stonefur's execution.[28] Her trauma is such that she withdraws into herself and isolates from others. Her resentment will eventually subside, and she will forgive Leopardstar's actions.[29] Gentle,[30] kind,[31][32] courageous,[33] compassionate,[34] and altruistic; she listens to her heart even when her feelings go against the warrior code.[35] She internalizes her anger a lot, and rarely loses her temper.[36][37][38]

Relationships

Graystripe and Silverstream

Feathertail: "Well...no cat's mistreating us, no. I just find it hard to trust the RiverClan cats. And especially Leopardstar. After everything that happened."
Graystripe: "I understand. And I want you to remember, you and your brother are always welcome in ThunderClan. No cat would object. You're my kits. You have the right to become ThunderClan warriors if that's what you want."
—Graystripe comforting Feathertail A Shadow in RiverClan, page 116
Feathertail never knew Silverstream, due to her mother dying at birth.[39] She was raised by Mosspelt because of her mother's death.[40] She and Silverstream met after she died killing Sharptooth.[33] Feathertail and Graystripe kept a close friendship despite being in two different Clans.[source?]

Stormfur

"[The dream] scared me so much. I couldn't eat or sleep for thinking about it. Stormfur knew something was wrong, and he pestered me so much that I told him what I'd dreamed. We decided that I should come to Fourtrees tonight, at the new moon, and Stormfur wouldn't let me come by myself. He...he didn't want me to be in danger. But I'm not, am I? I mean, we all know each other."
―Feathertail about Stormfur's concern for her Midnight (book), pages 71-72
Feathertail and Stormfur are much closer than regular siblings, since their mother is dead, and their father is in ThunderClan.[41] When Stormfur confronts Feathertail about Crowpaw, Feathertail states that the other cats on the journey are rude to the apprentice.[36]

Crowfeather

"Oh, Brambleclaw. Crowpaw's not so bad. It was hard for him, leaving the forest just when he was about to be made a warrior. I think he's lonely—I have Stormfur, and you have Tawnypelt and Squirrelpaw. We all knew each other before this, but Crowpaw is on his own."
―Feathertail defending Crowpaw Midnight (book), pages 207-208
Crowpaw took a liking to Feathertail as they journeyed to the sun-drown place.[42] When she died killing Sharptooth and saving the tribe, Crowpaw was heartbroken.[43] On The Great Journey, Crowpaw requested to be named after Feathertail, taking the name Crowfeather to honor her memory. [44]

Mistystar and Stonefur

Mistystar was Feathertail's mentor, and Feathertail deeply respects and trusts her. She calls Mistystar "one of the best cats she's ever met,"[45] and Mistystar was one of the only cats that she trusted when she first returned to RiverClan.[46] Feathertail misses Stonefur deeply after he was killed trying to save her and Stormpaw's lives. She felt close to him and Mistyfoot since they were also half-Clan cats. Feathertail held a grudge against RiverClan for a long time because they stood by while he died.[47]

Leopardstar

After returning to RiverClan, Feathertail initially disliked and mistrusted Leopardstar, since she did not stand up to Tigerstar when he ordered the death of Stonefur, Stormpaw, and Featherpaw.[48] She could not get over her feelings of anger, grief, and misgivings about the spotted leader, and therefore distanced herself from her Clanmates and the cats around her.[49] However, after Leopardstar proved her loyalty by saving Feathertail from a fox, Feathertail put her grudge aside, and trusted and respected Leopardstar.[50]

Sasha

Feathertail grew close to Sasha because they were both outcasts in RiverClan. After Feathertail saved Hawk, Sasha's son, from drowning, Sasha was eternally grateful. She let Feathertail teach Hawk and Moth how to swim. However, after Feathertail learned that Sasha was mates with Tigerstar, and never stopped loving him, she distanced herself from Sasha.[51]

Ferncloud

Feathertail became close with Fernpaw while she was a ThunderClan apprentice. She let Ferncloud have prey even though it had crossed the RiverClan border, and she expressed that she knew Ferncloud better than most of the cats in RiverClan.[52] However, once Feathertail put her mistrust of RiverClan cats aside, she distanced herself from Ferncloud, since Clan loyalty came first.[53]

Quotes

«How can I live with the cats who wanted my brother and me dead just because of who our parents were? Who cheered when Stonefur died. How can I look at Leopardstar and see anything...other than her giving that order?»
—Feathertail reflecting about her place in RiverClan A Shadow in RiverClan, page 34

Sasha: "Please don't tell the Clan! Feathertail, please. If any cat finds out that Tigerstar is Hawkpaw and Mothpaw's father, they won't be safe. Everything I've done has been to protect my kits. Please don't undo all of that. Tigerstar never met his kits. He never even knew I was expecting! Please don't punish them for what he did wrong. That's...that's what he tried to do to you, isn't it? Hurt you because of who your parents were? Please. Feathertail. We're friends, aren't we?"
Feathertail: "Fine. I'll keep your secret. But you and I are done."
Sasha: "Feathertail, no...please. You're my best friend."
Feathertail: "You knew! I told you what Tigerstar did to me. To Stormfur, to Stonefur. And not only did you keep your secret...you still love that...that tyrant. There's no way I can be your friend, or have any trust in you, anymore. In fact...you've let me see the truth. You and I have always been strangers, Sasha. I just didn't realize it until now."
—Feathertail arguing with Sasha about the truth about her kits A Shadow in RiverClan, pages 99-101

"I wasn’t in any danger, I could have escaped by myself, except I didn’t want to claw the little Twoleg."
―Feathertail Midnight (book), chapter 20

Feathertail: "Honestly! Do you toms never do anything but argue?"
Tawnypelt: "It’s what they do best."
Midnight (book), chapter 17

Stormfur: "But you and Crowpaw..."
Feathertail: "I’m not going to talk about me and Crowpaw. I’m sorry, Stormfur, but this doesn’t have anything to do with you."
Stormfur: "I worry about you, that’s all."
Feathertail: "I know. But there’s no need. Really."
Moonrise, chapter 5

Feathertail: "Think you have nine lives, do you? I saved you once... Don’t make me save you again."
Crowpaw: "Feathertail... Feathertail, no! Don’t leave me."
Feathertail: "I won't. I’ll always be with you, I promise."
Moonrise, page 271

Feathertail: "I can guess what you’re thinking. You think I’m angry about Crowfeather, don’t you? Do you think I wouldn’t want to see him happy? You make him happy; I can see that."
Leafpool: "I’m a medicine cat! I wish I could make him happy, but I can’t."
Twilight, chapter 6

"And you never came back. You gave your life to save your friends and the Tribe in the mountains. I've heard the story. RiverClan will never forget you."
―Willowpaw to Feathertail in a dream Sunset, page 200

Graystripe: "Feathertail...! My daughter... Our daughter..."
Feathertail: "Hello, Father. It's good to see you again."
Graystripe: "I heard about... I mean to say, they told me you had... You're at peace, then...? You're with your mother?"
Silverstream: "Yes, Graystripe. I joined StarClan even as our kits were born... But now my daughter and I are reunited."
—Graystripe meeting Feathertail in a dream The Lost Warrior, page 53

Feathertail: "They're perfect.
Squirrelflight: "How can you do this? You're asking me to lie to every cat I love."
Feathertail: "Because I love these kits as much as you do. They're Crowfeather's. How could I not? I want them to live the best life, not one lived outside the Clans, in shame and exile."
Squirrelflight: "Do you wish they were yours?"
Feathertail: "That was never meant to be. The destiny of these kits begins now and you have the power to change everything, Squirrelflight. Please believe me when I say Leafpool's kits must stay in ThunderClan."
—Feathertail convincing Squirrelflight to raise Leafpool's kits Leafpool's Wish, chapter 9
