"This kind of suspicion, without a real reason behind it, could destroy the Tribe - or the Clans."
This article contains major spoilers for the recently released book, Hidden Moon. Please proceed at your own discretion.
"It's not that simple. I joined ThunderClan to be with my mate. But when I moved here, I realized that the things I loved about Shellfur were ThunderClan things. I loved the way he smelled of leaves and the way he was interested in other Clans and how he was happy to get involved in their problems. The rest of ThunderClan is the same, and I like it. I'd always felt cut off on the moor, but here in the forest I feel like I'm living in the heart of the Clans."
— Fernstripe on adjusting to life in ThunderClan in Star, page 289

Fernstripe is a gray tabby she-cat.[5]

Fernstripe is a ThunderClan warrior under Bramblestar's and Squirrelstar's leaderships in the lake territories. She originated in WindClan, and was apprenticed as Fernpaw to Crowfeather. After she earned her warrior name, Fernstripe fell in love with the ThunderClan warrior Shellfur, and joined ThunderClan to become mates with him. She later had a litter of kits with Shellfur, consisting of Leapkit, Shykit, and Puffkit.

History[]

In the A Vision of Shadows arc[]

The Apprentice's Quest[]

Fernpaw is introduced as an apprentice of WindClan being mentored by Crowfeather.

Thunder and Shadow[]

In the ShadowClan camp, when several of the apprentices protest about their Clan, Sleekpaw notes that they are now only being peaceful, and Juniperpaw agrees that even WindClan does not respect them anymore even though ShadowClan is better. He recalls how, at the last Gathering, Fernpaw called them a bunch of frog-eaters, but how in the old days apprentices from other Clans would not dare speak to ShadowClan apprentices like that.
At another Gathering, the ThunderClan and RiverClan apprentices enthusiastically greet each other, but Fernpaw and Brindlepaw, the WindClan apprentices, eye them eagerly and want to meet them, yet do not move from their mentors' sides.
During another Gathering, Cypresspaw, a RiverClan apprentice at her first Gathering, shifts closer to her sister, Wavepaw, as Brindlepaw and Fernpaw pad toward them. She breathes that she did not think there would be so many cats, but her sister reminds her of the truce.

Darkest Night[]

Fernpaw, along with her denmates, Brindlepaw and Smokepaw, are present at a Gathering. Alderheart notes how quiet and shy the gray tabby is, saying that usually the apprentices are bouncy and very chatty with the other apprentices. This time, however, Fernpaw stays close to her mentor and does not say a word.

River of Fire[]

She is now a warrior with the name Fernstripe.

In the A Starless Clan arc[]

River[]

After the changes to the warrior code are approved, Harestar announces that Fernstripe wishes to join ThunderClan to be with Shellfur.

Sky[]

While on the journey to find catmint, Nightheart remarks to Sunbeam that Fernstripe is settling well in ThunderClan and his Clanmates do not really mind having her around. Squirrelflight later orders Shellfur and Fernstripe to clean out the warriors' den. Fernstripe later hunts with Nightheart, Finleap, and Shellfur.

Thunder[]

When Nightheart is reflecting about how the hunting patrol is back, he notes that the evening patrol will be leaving soon, and that patrol will include Fernstripe, Flipclaw, and Sorrelstripe. Later, when Shellfur gives his support to Sunbeam, she decides his support means a lot, and that Fernstripe, his mate, used to be a WindClan cat. When Sunbeam is teaching Spotfur's kits to hunt, Bristlekit thinks that loyalty needs to be more than just because a cat was born there, because Sunbeam or Fernstripe would not have been in ThunderClan.

Star[]

"Fernstripe likes Shellfur because he smells like leaves."
―Sunbeam using Fernstripe and Shellfur's relationship to tease Nightheart Star, chapter 20
During a discussion about Clan switching, Sunbeam notices Fernstripe looking anxious and recalls how she had left WindClan to be with Shellfur. Later, when Lizardtail argues with Squirrelstar on changing Clans and questions the difference between his and Sunbeam's circumstances, Fernstripe comes to Sunbeam's defense and says she initially came to ThunderClan to be with Shellfur but eventually learned to love ThunderClan aspects as well. Soon after, Sunbeam affectionately teases Nightheart, saying she loves him for his warmth and humor while Fernstripe, who had settled next to Shellfur in the clearing, loves him because he smells like leaves.

Onestar's Confession[]

Fernpaw: "I didn't, Onestar. I spotted the mouse in the bushes. It seemed mouse-brained not to catch it. I only went a couple of paw steps out of the hollow."
Onestar: "And that was a couple of paw steps too many. Go and report to Kestrelflight and tell him I said you were to do the elders' ticks until the next Gathering."
—Onestar punishing Fernpaw for leaving camp Onestar's Confession, page 351
When Onestar returns from visiting the Moonpool, he spots Fernpaw injured in Kestrelflight's den. Kestrelflight explains that she was separated during a hunting patrol and was viciously attacked. Fernpaw adds that she cannot recall who attacked her since she hit her head on a rock, but Onestar suspects it was Darktail seeking revenge.
After Darktail make himself known to the Clans, Onestar forbids any of the apprentices from leaving camp to keep them safe. However, Fernpaw hunts just outside of camp while her mentor Crowfeather is on a border patrol. Onestar confronts her for leaving camp, but the gray tabby apprentice explains she only barely left the camp. Her leader instead berates her for disobeying his orders and punishes her with taking care of the elders' ticks for a moon. Disheartened, Fernpaw apologizes as she heads for the medicine cat's den. Whitetail confronts her mate for his sharp behavior towards Fernpaw, but Onestar insists he is doing his best to keep his Clanmates safe.
