"What did we really gain by moving to the lake? What kind of leader have I been?"
This article contains major spoilers for the recently released book, The Elders' Quest. Please proceed at your own discretion.
"It doesn't matter which Clan a warrior comes from. Or if they come from StarClan at all. If a dead cat has a message to pass on, we must listen to it and do our best to honor their wishes."
— Fidgetflake to Rootpaw about dead cats in The Silent Thaw, page 88

Fidgetflake is a black-and-white tom[1] with yellow eyes.[14]

Fidgetflake is a SkyClan medicine cat under Leafstar's leadership in the lake territories. He was born in the gorge as Fidgetkit to Birdwing and Sagenose alongside his sisters, Curlykit and Snipkit; however, Snipkit drowned as SkyClan fled the gorge and Curlypaw left to become a kittypet. After helping Echosong heal their Clanmates, he became her apprentice as Fidgetpaw. Fidgetpaw was SkyClan's sole medicine cat after she left to search for ThunderClan, but he was soon captured by Twolegs. Hawkwing's patrol found Fidgetpaw at the gorge, and after reuniting with SkyClan, Frecklewish resumed his training. He earned his full medicine cat name, Fidgetflake, and temporarily mentored Rootspring with Frecklewish. Later, he led the journey to find catmint and helped during RiverClan's leader succession crisis, growing suspicious when he found wilted catmint in their herb stores.

A Vision of Shadows[]

Fidgetpaw: "You came. I dreamed you would. I've been waiting for days. It's great to see you all."
Hawkwing: "You escaped!"
Fidgetpaw: "Of course I escaped. You didn't think Twolegs could hold me for long, did you?"
Hawkwing: "I'm so sorry we couldn't save you. There was nothing we could do."
Fidgetpaw: "I know. It's okay."
—Fidgetpaw meeting Hawkwing's patrol Darkest Night, page 165
Fidgetpaw has escaped from his Twoleg captors and is sheltering at the gorge with Mintfur, Nettlesplash, and their kits. He is discovered by Hawkwing's patrol searching for the missing SkyClan cats and helps to rescue Frecklewish from the tall Twoleg nest where she is captured. Rejoining SkyClan at the lake, he resumes his medicine cat training under Frecklewish and meets the other Clan medicine cats at the Moonpool. Soon, he earns his full name of Fidgetflake. He follows SkyClan when they decide to return to the gorge until a harsh storm convinces them that their place is with the other Clans.

The Broken Code[]

"I keep wondering if leaving the gorge and coming here has weakened our connection to our ancestors. Did we make the wrong choice?"
―Fidgetflake about StarClan's silence Lost Stars, page 87
Figetflake is troubled when the frozen Moonpool prevents the Clans from sharing with StarClan and he worries that bringing non medicine cats to the Moonpool will desecrate their sacred space. He advises Rootpaw on the nature of spirits and when Rootpaw summons Bramblestar's ghost to prove that ThunderClan's leader is an impostor, Fidgetflake backs him up to Leafstar. However, when Leafstar asks that Rootpaw train as a medicine cat apprentice, Fidgetflake grows impatient with Rootpaw's lack of talent. He and the other medicine cats help Tree perform the Sister's ritual to summon Bramblestar's ghost. Fidgetflake and Frecklewish are able to save Shadowsight's life after the ShadowClan medicine cat is nearly killed by the impostor.

A Starless Clan[]

"You forgot that you had catmint? Do you expect me to believe that while your leader and deputy were dying of greencough, neither one of you remembered that you had one herb that could save them?"
―Fidgetflake critical of Mothwing and Frostpaw Sky, page 249
Fidgetflake and the other medicine cats present new amendments to the warrior code for StarClan's approval. To address a catmint shortage, Fidgetflake and Rootspring lead Nightheart, Alderheart, Lightleap, and Sunbeam to a Twolegplace that SkyClan passed through on their way to the lake. When the Clans learn that RiverClan is without a leader or deputy, Leafstar sends Fidgetflake so he can accompany Owlnose to receive his nine lives. However, he finds a pile of forgotten catmint in their storage that would have saved Rowankit's life and sees through Mothwing's false account of Mistystar's death.
On their way to the Moonpool, Fidgetflake's descriptions of his dreams with StarClan cause Frostpaw to doubt the validity of her own. Before they reach the Moonpool, Owlnose decides he does not want to become leader and Mothwing refuses to let Fidgetflake tell the other Clans. He returns to SkyClan and calls for an emergency medicine cat meeting, encouraging Frostpaw to speak with StarClan. Later, Tigerstar learns about Fidgetflake's discovery of catmint and launches an attack on RiverClan. Later, Fidgetflake doubts whether Frostpaw and Podlight have a connection to StarClan.

Changing Skies[]

"And [prey's] not the only problem. What about all this mess? What's going on here?"
―Fidgetflake troubled by Twoleg activity at the Moonpool The Elders' Quest, chapter 12
Fidgetflake helps treat a mysterious illness affecting Sagenose and Bellaleaf and realizes it is coming from the prey in the fresh-kill pile. When Kitescratch's preventable death prompts SkyClan to vote on deposing Leafstar, he and Frecklewish guiltily vote against her. At the half-moon meeting, Fidgetflake is the only medicine cat who is seriously concerned by the Twolegs' activity around the Moonpool. He accompanies Rootspring and Harrybrook as they carry Leafstar home after her fall into the ravine and treats her injuries with Frecklewish. Later, he attends to Tawnypelt after the ShadowClan warrior falls into the Workfolk's pit.

Echosong: "Believe me, Leafstar, I've thought long and hard about this. But I know that drastic steps must be taken to save the Clan! And I believe that Fidgetpaw is capable. I've trained him as well as I can."
Fidgetpaw: "I'll do my best, Leafstar."
—Fidgetpaw putting on a brave face for SkyClan Hawkwing's Journey, chapter 30
In Hawkwing's Journey, Fidgetkit, Curlykit, and Snipkit are separated from their parents after Darktail and his rogues attack the gorge; however, Snipkit falls into the river and drowns. He helps treat Echosong's wounds after she protects the remaining kits from a raccoon and helps treat the injured after the Clan regroups. As a result, Echosong recommends him as a medicine cat apprentice, especially considering Frecklewish has gone missing. SkyClan eventually settle at a lake, but Echosong decides to leave in search of ThunderClan, leaving Fidgetpaw the sole medicine cat. He and several other SkyClan cats are kidnapped by Twolegs, leaving SkyClan with no medicine cat until Echosong returns.

Personality and traits[]

«In the days he'd been here, the SkyClan medicine cat had checked every RiverClan cat for illness, treated their ticks, and made sure that the whole Clan groomed itself meticulously for fleas. He'd helped fix the medicine den—mending the sagging wall, patching up the roof, and weaving new nests [...] But now, as he picked up a desiccated yarrow leaf with his claw and examined it, he was less gracious.»
—Fidgetflake reaching the limits of his good will Sky, page 242
Fidgetflake is an intelligent, competent,[15] loyal, spiritual, dedicated, and reliable medicine cat. He takes to his responsibilities with a clear certainty of purpose and continues to show that steadfastness of character through all of the hardships his Clan suffers, serving his Clan and StarClan with solemn devotion.[16] He is compassionate toward the sick and shows concern for the health of cats in other Clans.[17] Moreover, he has a serious demeanor when protecting his Clanmates[18] and bore them no ill will when they failed to rescue him from the Twolegs.[19] As a kit, he was bold against the threats of Darktail's rogues and tried to be brave through his grief.[20] He remained brave into adulthood, climbing the tall Twoleg nest to find Frecklewish.[19] While he is sympathetic[21] and friendly toward strangers,[22] he is occasionally crabby, impatient,[23] and critical if he believes someone is being deceitful.[24][23] Additionally, he showed wit in his decision to return to the gorge after being separated from SkyClan and bragged of his skill escaping the Twolegs,[19] and he has no qualms with eating tasty Twoleg prey.[25]

Relationships[]

Echosong[]

"We'll look after you, Echosong. Are you comfortable there? If you stretch out more it should be better. And can we find you any herbs to help with the pain?"
―Fidgetkit fussing over Echosong Hawkwing's Journey, chapter 18
Echosong.SS

Echosong was Fidgetflake's first mentor, but she occasionally asked too much of her apprentice.

Fidgetkit was first introduced to medicine in the aftermath of SkyClan's flight from the gorge when he and Curlykit were found by Hawkwing, Pebblepaw, and Echosong. Echosong was affectionate but realistic toward Fidgetkit, gently confessing that Snipkit was likely dead, though she indulged his hopes. She protected him and Curlykit from a raccoon and Fidgetkit helped gather and apply cobwebs to her wounds.[18] Fidgetkit stayed by Echosong's side, healing their Clanmates as SkyClan sheltered at Ebonyclaw's Twoleg nest,[26] and was thrilled when Echosong recommended him as a medicine cat apprentice.[27] Moreover, Fidgetpaw respected his mentor, declining to challenge Echosong when she left SkyClan's care up to him.[28] Echosong was horrified to learn that her apprentice had been captured by Twolegs[29] and the two never met again, as she died of infection several moons later.[30] However, Fidgetflake and Frecklewish speak with her spirit at the Moonpool.[31]

Frecklewish[]

"There's nothing left for us here. Let's fetch Frecklewish and leave"
―Fidgetpaw about leaving the gorge to join SkyClan at the lake Darkest Night, chapter 15
Frecklewish.silhouette

Frecklewish took over Fidgetflake's training and granted him his medicine cat name.

Frecklewish was a medicine cat alongside Echosong when Fidgetkit was born. However, she was captured by Twolegs after Darktail drove SkyClan from the gorge, and Fidgetpaw did not encounter her again until he returned to the gorge after escaping from his own Twoleg captors. Fidgetpaw bravely climbed the trees overlooking her Twoleg next, but could not reach her. His powerlessness to save her deeply discouraged Fidgetpaw,[19] but when Hawkwing's patrol arrived, he was able to help free Frecklewish.[32] At the lake, Frecklewish became Fidgetpaw's new mentor and she granted him his full name, Fidgetflake.[33] The two work well together and attempt to diffuse tensions with ShadowClan.[34] Still, Fidgetflake disagreed with Frecklewish about bringing non medicine cats to break the ice on the Moonpool.[35]

Rootspring[]

Rootpaw: "I'm sorry! I tried so hard, and it was no use."
Fidgetflake: "Don't blame yourself."
—Fidgetflake comforting Rootpaw Veil of Shadows, chapter 8
Rootspring.FG-8

While Rootspring's oddness confused Fidgetflake, he ultimately came to his friend's support.

Rootpaw sought out Fidgetflake when he began seeing Bramblestar's ghost, hoping to get advice while not admitting what he had seen.[36] Fidgetflake was among the few medicine cats to believe Rootpaw when he summoned the ghost[37] but he was not enthusiastic about mentoring him, as Rootpaw had no talent for medicine. Still, Rootpaw appeared closer with Fidgetflake than Frecklewish, as his first instinct was to fetch Fidgetflake when he found Shadowsight mortally injured.[38] Likewise, Fidgetflake praised how hard his apprentice was working and supported Rootpaw against other cats' doubts when he and Tree performed a summoning ritual for Bramblestar's ghost, comforting him when they failed.[39] Moons later on their journey to find catmint, Rootspring shoved Fidgetflake to safety across the Thunderpath when the medicine cat fell behind.[40]

Curlypaw and Snipkit[]

«[Snipkit's] littermates, Curlykit and Fidgetkit, had whimpered all through [her burial], and ever since, Hawkwing had noticed that they wandered around in a daze, all their high spirits gone»
—Fidgetkit and Curlykit grieving Snipkit Hawkwing's Journey, chapter 19
When Snipkit was swept away in the river as the Clan was driven from the gorge by Darktail, Fidgetkit and Curlykit were frantic to find her. Fidgetkit protested against Echosong's suggestion that Snipkit had died, rationalizing that she may have washed onto the opposite bank.[18] However, when Tinycloud found the drowned body, Fidgetkit and Curlykit became withdrawn.[26] Still, they were able to cross the river with only a moment's hesitation when they returned to the place where Snipkit drowned.[41] Later, Fidgetpaw witnessed Curlypaw being kidnapped by Dodge's rogues.[42] Hawkwing encouraged Curlypaw to spend time with Fidgetpaw and learn about his medicine cat training,[43] and the siblings enjoyed playing pretend with Rileypool.[44] It is unknown how he reacted to Curlypaw's choice to leave SkyClan and become a kittypet;[45] however, he believes that most kittypets are okay and would not challenge Clan cats for herbs.[17]

Birdwing and Sagenose[]

Sagenose: "I can at least go with them!"
Leafstar: "No. SkyClan needs you, Sagenose."
Sagenose: "Birdwing and Fidgetpaw need me."
—Sagenose desperate to save his mate and kit Hawkwing's Journey, chapter 32
Upon reuniting with their kits and learning of Snipkit's disappearance, Birdwing gathered Fidgetkit and Curlykit close to her and Sagenose pushed his muzzle into her fur.[18] They watched proudly at their kits' apprentice ceremony[27] and when Leafstar decided that SkyClan would leave their temporary camp, Fidgetpaw sat beside his parents at the Clan meeting. Immediately after, he and Birdwing were captured by Twolegs. Sagenose tore at the grass with his claws, desperate to save them and baulked at the thought of abandoning them.[45] Fidgetpaw reunited with his father at the lake territories.[46]

StarClan[]

Mothwing: "What's the difference whether they're with us or not? Does it really change how we live?"
Fidgetflake: "Of course it does! What's the point of being warriors if we're not guided by our ancestors?"
—Fidgetflake about the importance of StarClan Darkness Within, page 181
Logo-starclan-textless
Fidgetflake is deeply spiritual and concerned with the Clans' relationship with StarClan.[47] He may even be able to sense ghosts, being able to scent ThunderClan when Squirrelflight's spirit is watching.[48] Upon being made an apprentice, Fidgetpaw was unable to share with StarClan at the Whispering Cave.[27] However, he still had visions during SkyClan's exile, though he lost this connection after Echosong left.[45] Yet, he eventually regained some connection, dreaminng of Hawkwing's arrival at the gorge mere days before he arrived. Though he initially believed that StarClan wanted SkyClan reunited with the other Clans,[19] he grew concerned that leaving the gorge had weakened their connection to their ancestors, especially after a period of StarClan's silence.[49] He is defensive that StarClan decides the code for the Clans, not the Clans themselves,[17] and is the only medicine cat seriously concerned by Twoleg activity at the Moonpool.[50]

"I think StarClan would want us to be with the other Clans. They led Leafstar and Hawkwing to the lake for a reason. I think we should go with them. The gorge will never be what it once was to us."
―Fidgetpaw to the other cats Darkest Night, page 171

«Fidgetflake stiffened and blinked suddenly at Squirrelflight. Squirrelflight froze [...] Her breath caught in her throat. Then she realized that the young medicine cat wasn't staring at her; [he] was staring straight through her.»
