"If I'm bloodying my paws already, why stop at one cat?"
This article contains major spoilers for the recently released book, Wind. Please proceed at your own discretion.
"It seems shortsighted to make them enemies without hearing what they have to say. Whatever their reasons were for leaving, surely we can talk it out with them. I know RiverClan has been through a lot, but the solution isn't to divide and turn on ourselves. That will only make us weaker."
— Harelight to Splashtail in Wind, page 276

Harelight is a white tom[8] with a long tail.[20]

Harelight was the deputy of RiverClan under Splashtail's leadership in the lake territories. He was born as Harekit to Lakeheart and Lizardtail alongside his littermates, Softkit, Dapplekit, and Gorsekit. He was apprenticed as Harepaw to Mallownose and Sneezecloud, and later earned his full name, Harelight. After he fought against RiverClan and Bramblestar's impostor in a battle between the Clans, Mistystar exiled Harelight and Icewing from the Clan for disobeying her orders, but Tigerstar accepted them into ShadowClan. He later returned to RiverClan following the defeat of the impostor, and agreed with Tigerstar's suggestion to lead RiverClan after Mistystar's and Reedwhisker's deaths. Tigerstar chose him to mentor Frostpaw when the young she-cat decided to step down and train as a warrior. After Splashtail was chosen to be leader, he appointed Harelight as his deputy, though Harelight was killed by his leader after questioning his decisions.

History[]

In the A Vision of Shadows arc[]

The Apprentice's Quest[]

During a Gathering, Harekit and his siblings are mentioned by Mistystar to have been born to Lakeheart as healthy kits.

Darkest Night[]

Harepaw is now an apprentice alongside with his siblings.

The Raging Storm[]

"Plumpaw and Eaglepaw think SkyClan should have stayed. So do Dapplepaw and Harepaw in RiverClan. It's only the leaders who want them gone."
―Flypaw about the apprentices' opinion on SkyClan The Raging Storm, chapter 17
On the way to the Gathering, Flypaw mentions that she hopes Harepaw and Dapplepaw will attend so she can show off her battle moves. When they arrive, Harepaw and the ThunderClan apprentice talk while Snappaw and Dapplepaw practice crouches nearby. After SkyClan leaves the lake, several cats want to bring them back because of StarClan's will. Flypaw mentions that Harepaw and Dapplepaw think they should have stayed.

In The Broken Code arc[]

Veil of Shadows[]

"I believed that you were loyal RiverClan warriors. Yet in the battle I saw you fighting against your Clan. You disobeyed my orders. Even now that I know the false Bramblestar was evil, I must send you into exile."
―Mistystar exiling Harelight and Icewing Veil of Shadows, page 286
Harelight and Icewing join the rebels wishing to overthrow Bramblestar's impostor. After Dappletuft is killed during a failed attempt on the impostor's life, Mistystar has Dappletuft buried like a rogue without a vigil. Harelight and his kin quietly mourn during a Gathering. During the deadly battle between the Clans, Harelight and Icewing fight against the impostor and RiverClan, and Harelight's sister, Softpelt, is killed. As a result, Mistystar banishes them for being disloyal to RiverClan. Despite Mothwing's and Leafstar's objections, Mistystar remains firm on her decision. Tigerstar criticizes Mistystar for her choice and welcomes the exiles into ShadowClan.

Darkness Within[]

"I would have been here for them both, whatever happened."
―Harelight mourning Softpelt and Dappletuft Darkness Within, page 44
At a Gathering, Harelight joins his ShadowClan Clanmates alongside Mothwing and Icewing, who all three were previously exiled by Mistystar for fighting with the rebels during the last battle. Rootspring greets them, and when asked if Mistystar came, Harelight responds that he doesn't see her, but says that she would have to send some cats to not offend the other Clans, and to honor his sister, Softpelt. Harelight thinks that Mistystar might forgive them and allow them back into RiverClan, and he later mournfully states that he would have been there for Dappletuft and Softpelt, for whatever happened.

The Place of No Stars[]

Bristlefrost notes that Mothwing had refused to come back to RiverClan until Mistystar let Harelight and Icewing back into the Clan, holding on to the belief that they were fighting for a good cause and should not be exiled.

A Light in the Mist[]

At the Moonpool meeting, Mothwing mentions to the other medicine cats that Mistystar had already let Harelight and Icewing back, and that she would be leaving ShadowClan to rejoin RiverClan after the meeting.

In the A Starless Clan arc[]

Sky[]

Owlnose struggles to organize Havenpelt and Harelight to a border patrol. When StarClan doesn't grant Owlnose nine lives, Harelight mentions how Onestar had to wait before he was granted his nine lives. Harelight later supports Splashtail as deputy. When Tigerstar arrives to lead RiverClan temporarily, Harelight and Icewing support him since he allowed them to join ShadowClan when Mistystar exiled them. During the battle, Harelight and Icewing flee into the river.

Shadow[]

"What are you trying to say? That I'm less loyal because I was forced out my Clan over an impostor that the rest of you chose to obey? One who wasn't even a RiverClan cat?"
―Harelight to Duskfur about his loyalty Shadow, page 88
Following Tigerstar's victory over RiverClan, Harelight stands up for Tigerstar, though a few of his Clanmates question his loyalty to RiverClan after he spent some time in ShadowClan. However, Harelight challenges Tigerstar when the ShadowClan leader names them all temporary ShadowClan cats. When Frostpaw decides to step down and train as a warrior apprentice, Tigerstar names Harelight her new mentor. Duskfur questions his loyalty again to RiverClan, but Harelight insists he's always been a loyal RiverClan cat, even when the others followed the impostor and he didn't.
Frostpaw quickly bonds with her new mentor, and he defends her from Duskfur and Splashtail's criticisms. He later demonstrates a battle move to her, and Frostpaw flourishes under his praise. Harelight praises her to Splashtail and Lizardtail while they are fishing. After Frostpaw treats Splashtail's injuried paw, Harelight allows her to stay with Splashtail to fish by the river. A few days later while fishing with Harelight, Frostpaw experiences a vision of Reedwhisker's murder. Her mentor asks if she's alright and Frostpaw insists she's unwell and returns back to camp alone. A few days later, Harelight snaps at Frostpaw for not focusing during a hunting patrol. When Frostpaw sneaks into WindClan territory to speak with Whistlepaw, she wonders what her mentor would say.

Thunder[]

When Frostpaw is explaining her vision, she says that she was training with Harelight when she had it. Later, when Frostpaw is thinking about leaders, she thinks that Harelight would be a good leader. When Frostpaw is later playing with The Park Cats, Frostpaw is grateful that Harelight taught her how to outrun an attacker.

Wind[]

"We are still sorting out what happened in RiverClan. We still have to decide what we will do next. But one thing I know is that I want my Clan to be strong and independent. RiverClan must be in charge of its own destiny. So I want to help Splashstar rebuild our Clan. I want to prove to the rest of you that we can govern ourselves."
―Harelight about his position of deputy Wind (book), chapter 13
Harelight and Mothwing warmly greet Frostpaw when she returns to the Clans, having believed her to be dead. When Frostpaw announces that she left the Clans because she wasn't sure who to trust, she catches Harelight's pained expression. Harelight is later appointed deputy by Splashtail. Frostpaw is shocked to see him working with Splashtail, but the white tom announces that he wants to help his leader rebuild RiverClan by governing themselves.
After Splashtail announces to his warriors that they should hunt down Duskfur, Icewing, and Mothwing for betraying RiverClan, Harelight approaches his leader after the meeting to question his decisions. The deputy believes that their former Clanmates must have had reasons for leaving and they should speak with them first before calling for their deaths. Splashtail notes how Harelight has a deep understanding of the old RiverClan, and the RiverClan leader promptly slashes his throat. Harelight collapses to the ground and dies shortly after, his kin Lizardtail and Gorseclaw wailing with grief. Splashtail appoints Berryheart as his new deputy.

Quotes[]

"Yeah, can't we even atone somehow?"
―Harelight to Mistystar after he and Icewing are exiled Veil of Shadows, page 287

Harelight: "[Mistystar] might forgive us eventually and ask us back too?"
Rootspring: "Mistystar let Softpelt's kin come to the vigil. That's close to forgiveness, isn't it?"
Icewing: "Softpelt fought for the impostor, not against him. Do you suppose [Mistystar] would have let them come if Dappletuft had been the only warrior to die?"
Harelight: "I would have been here for them both, whatever happened."
—Harelight, Rootspring, and Icewing discussing Mistystar and the fallen RiverClan warriors Darkness Within, page 44

"Why do we have to listen to Harelight? He spent so much time in ShadowClan, he's practically one of them!"
―Duskfur about Harelight Shadow (book), chapter 1

"We're RiverClan! And I'll rip the fur off any cat who says we aren't."
―Harelight challenging Tigerstar Shadow (book), chapter 4

"Duskfur? Splashtail? Are you Frostpaw's mentors, or am I? Get back on your patrol, and stop interfering."
―Harelight to Duskfur and Splashtail Shadow (book), chapter 7

«She felt her belly lurch with guilt as she saw the hurt on Harelight's face, as if her mentor was asking, Couldn't you have come to me?'»
—Frostpaw's thoughts about Harelight's pained expression Wind (book), chapter 1

"Indeed. Harelight, you have such a deep understanding of old RiverClan—the RiverClan that came into being after Leopardstar died. A peaceful, relaxed place, a RiverClan that just let the current float it wherever it would...The cats of that RiverClan did not worry about territory, or strength, or legacy—they just sat on their paws all day."
―Splashtail to Harelight before killing him Wind (book), chapter 23
