"I don't think you should bother Bramblestar. He's too important to spend time listening to you."
— Shellfur rejecting Spotfur's idea in Spotfur's Rebellion, chapter 4

Shellfur is a tortoiseshell tom[4] with green eyes.[5]

Shellfur is a ThunderClan warrior who has served under Bramblestar's, the impostor's, Lionblaze's, Graystripe's, and Squirrelstar's leaderships in the lake territories. He was born to Blossomfall and Thornclaw as Shellkit alongside his siblings Eaglekit, Stemkit, and Plumkit. He was apprenticed to Bumblestripe as Shellpaw and earned his warrior name of Shellfur. He fell in love with the WindClan warrior Fernstripe, who joined ThunderClan to be with him.

History[]

In the A Vision of Shadows arc[]

Shattered Sky[]

After Leafpool and Alderheart spend half the night assisting the delivery, Shellkit, Plumkit, Stemkit, and Eaglekit are born to Blossomfall and Thornclaw. The day after their birth, Briarlight begs to be told more about them. Leafpool comments that it's great to see new life and the birth of the kits brings her hope. Briarlight asks if their eyes are open yet and Alderheart replies that they won't be for a few days, but all the kits are healthy and strong.
Briarlight tests herself to on their names, remarking on how beautiful they are, and is certain that the kits are beautiful too. She expresses her impatience to see the kits, and Leafpool recalls that Thornclaw was very anxious at the arrival of his first litter. During a Clan meeting, Thornclaw asks what would happen to Shellkit and his siblings if Darktail's group attacked. When Snowbird's kits, Gullkit, Frondkit, and Conekit, move into ThunderClan's nursery, Shellkit and his siblings play with them.

Darkest Night[]

When Blossomfall speaks with Tinycloud, a SkyClan queen, about her unborn kits Shellkit and his siblings play lively. Their mother meows that once Tinycloud's kits are born, there won't be any peace for her. He later plays with his siblings and the elders, begging their grandfather, Graystripe to give them a badger ride. Millie purrs that there's enough room for all of them, taking each of the kits and plopping them on the gray tom. He staggers and cries that they weigh more than owls. All the kits squeal with delight as Graystripe swings one way, then the other. The elder puffs that he can't carry the kits, and his mate replies that he can, as he's still the strongest cat in ThunderClan.
In camp, when Willowshine visits ThunderClan's camp, Shellkit and his littermates are playing. Eaglekit hooks a moss ball away from her littermates, letting out a delighted mew. Later, during a visit to Leafpool, Thornclaw reports to the medicine cat that his kits are doing well. He says that Shellkit and Eaglekit are determined to climb Higheledge and explore Bramblestar's den.
When a rockslide occurs in ThunderClan's camp, every cat is ordered to evacuate to the lakeshore. Blossomfall passes Stemkit and Shellkit through a gap in the brambles, and Fernsong and Ivypool grab them. The warriors take them and race out of camp, their mother following behind. Shellkit makes it safely out of danger, and as Alderheart dozes, he can hear the kits squeaking excitedly.

River of Fire[]

At a Gathering, Bramblestar reports that Shellkit, along with his littermates, have now become apprentices, and that Shellpaw has been given Bumblestripe as a mentor. He is mentioned, although unnamed, by Blossomfall at Briarlight's funeral. Her mother hopes Shellpaw and his siblings will inherit some of their aunt's courage and optimism.
When Velvet, a visiting kittypet, is moved to the apprentices' den, Twigpaw happily tells the gray she-cat that she would enjoy staying in the den with her, Shellpaw, the other apprentices, and Fuzzball, another kittypet visitor. Not long after Twigpaw mentions Shellpaw, the tom returns from a patrol with Bumblestripe and Poppyfrost, with a kittypet named Ajax in tow, who has come to fetch Velvet and Fuzzball.

The Raging Storm[]

Shellpaw is mentioned briefly by Twigbranch to be hunting with Plumpaw and their mentors.

In The Broken Code arc[]

Veil of Shadows[]

"You don't even know what you're doing! […] It's just getting worse!"
―Shellfur to Flipclaw after the medicine cat attempts to treat his wound Veil of Shadows, page 224
Shellfur, along with Leafshade, fights shoulder to shoulder with Bramblestar when he is ambushed by the rebels. His paw gets injured during the attack and he sees Flipclaw to get it treated after it becomes infected and gives him a fever. Shellfur tells the young tom that he isn't making it better and has no idea what he is doing. During the battle with the rebels, he and Leafshade are ordered by their leader to attack Leafstar, but the two warriors turn their backs on Bramblestar.

In the A Starless Clan arc[]

River[]

After changes are approved to the warrior code, Harestar announces that Fernstripe plans to leave WindClan to be with Shellfur in ThunderClan. Although Harestar is unhappy, he agrees to the changes and permits Fernstripe to leave. Flamepaw later mentions Fernstripe, and suggests to Sunbeam that perhaps she should look for love outside ShadowClan and do what Fernstripe has done.

Sky[]

"Cleaning out dens doesn't have to be boring. Look how much the kits are enjoying it."
―Shellfur to Nightheart about cleaning Sky (book), page 177
Nightheart recalls how Shellfur and Thriftear gossiped about Bramblestar experiencing nightmares which forced him to sleep on Highledge instead of his den, thought Nightheart doesn't believe them. When discussing about changing Clans with Sunbeam, Nightheart brings up how happy Shellfur is now that Fernstripe is in ThunderClan. Squirrelflight later orders Shellfur and Fernstripe to clean out the warriors' den. When Nightheart complains about it, Shellfur attempts to cheery him up by pointing out Spotfur's kits playing in the bedding. Shellfur later hunts with Fernstripe, Finleap, and Nightheart.

Thunder[]

When Sunbeam is confronted by Berryheart, Shellfur gives his support to Sunbeam, and Sunbeam noted that his support meant a lot.

Wind[]

"We haven't had apprentices yet. And we've been warriors far longer than this upstart."
―Shellfur about Nightheart Wind (book), page 193
During Wafflepaw's apprentice ceremony, Shellfur and Honeyfur are annoyed that Nightheart is receiving an apprentice before them, even though they're older. Squirrelstar rebukes them, and they no longer protest. Ivypool later takes Shellfur with her to escort Sneezecloud and Gorseclaw out of camp.

In the Super Editions[]

Squirrelflight's Hope[]

He is now a warrior named Shellfur.

Graystripe's Vow[]

Graystripe spots Shellfur near the warriors' den discussing the warrior code with Bumblestripe.

In the Novellas[]

Spotfur's Rebellion[]

"What a mouse-brain! You can't fight rogues. You're too little. You've only been an apprentice for two sunrises."
―Shellpaw criticizing Spotpaw Spotfur's Rebellion, chapter 1
As Spotpaw brags about her bravery in getting close to the WindClan border, Shellpaw calls the new apprentice a mousebrain, noting that she's too little to fight. Spotpaw ignores him, spitting back that she's tougher than him already, remembering how even as kits, Shellpaw thought he was better. Before things escalate, Bumblestripe takes his apprentice out of camp for battle training. Spotpaw and Stempaw decide to secretly follow them, and the two watch Bumblestripe instruct Shellpaw on a proper hunting crouch. Spotpaw decides to ambush Bumblestripe, who is focused intensely on the training, but the tabby swiftly notices her and brings the apprentice to the ground. After his mentor berates the apprentices' behavior, Shellpaw calls the two mousebrains under his breath as they are led back to camp.
Moons later, after Shellfur becomes a warrior, he disagrees with Spotfur's proposal to add a rule about disciplining apprentices properly, arguing that Bramblestar doesn't have time to listen to her. Spotfur spits back that no cat asked him, and Shellfur warns Stemleaf not to let Spotfur get him into trouble like when they were apprentices.
Shellfur is part of the battle patrol that defends Bramblestar's impostor from Spotfur and Stemleaf's ambush. He has Spotfur pinned to the ground, but looks up in horror to see Stemleaf killed by the false ThunderClan leader.

Personality[]

«He wasn't as bossy now as when they'd been apprentices, but he was still sure he knew best.»
—Spotfur's thoughts on Shellfur Spotfur's Rebellion, chapter 4
Shellfur is a confident, critical warrior of ThunderClan,[6] and according to Spotfur, bossy.[7] He is often impatient,[8] but is loyal to his Clan — as long as he believes he is doing the right thing.[9]

Relationships[]

Spotfur[]

«[Spotpaw] didn't like Shellpaw anywhere near as much as she liked Stempaw. When she and her littermates were still in the nursery, he'd always lorded over them how much more important apprentices were than kits. And now that she was an apprentice too, he still thought he was better than her.»
—Spotpaw's opinion on Shellpaw Spotfur's Rebellion, chapter 1
Shellfur and Spotfur were kits together, though the tom was several moons older. When he became an apprentice, Shellpaw emphasized the importance of apprentices, indirectly insulting Spotkit.[6] Their relationship did not improve after Spotpaw became an apprentice, and the two bickered often, even after becoming warriors. Shellfur disapproved of Spotfur's close relationship with his brother, Stemleaf, due to Spotfur's history of getting his brother in trouble.[7]

Stemleaf[]

"Don't let her get you in trouble again."
―Shellfur to Stemleaf about Spotfur Spotfur's Rebellion, chapter 4
Of all Shellfur's littermates, he and Stemleaf were seemingly the closest. Shellfur cared for his brother, warning him not to be taken advantage of by Spotfur;[7] however, when Stemleaf and Spotfur led a rebellion against Bramblestar's impostor, Shellfur fought against them. The death of his brother came as a horrible shock to Shellfur.[5]

Bumblestripe[]

Bumblestripe: "Pull your paws back so they're right under your shoulders. You'll leap higher that way."
Shellpaw: "Like this?"
Bumblestripe: "Much better."
—Bumblestripe teaching Shellpaw Spotfur's Rebellion, chapter 1
As Shellfur's uncle and mentor, Bumblestripe shares a close relationship with the tom, and the two spend time together even after Shellfur completes his training.[10]
