"Suppose I run toward the Twolegs. I can keep them distracted while the rest of you seek your freedom."

Graystripe's Vow[]

"I'm not sure about this. I don't much like it out here. What happens if it rains?"
―Sunflower Graystripe's Vow, page 379
Sunflower is one of many kittypets trapped in a Twoleg nest with a neglectful Twoleg. When the cats escape with the help of WarriorClan, Graystripe, and Fang, they gather in the garden behind the den and Graystripe attempts to organize them. Sunflower interrupts him, saying that he's not sure about this and asks what they'll do if it rains. An old tabby she-cat adds that they don't know how to hunt, and suggests that they go back inside the den. Sunflower agrees, saying that they know how to survive in the den since they did it for so long. Fang points out that some of them didn't survive, like his mother. Sunflower apologizes, saying that they all remember Gremlin.
Graystripe leads the cats out of the garden. However, before they get far, Daffodil collapses, and the older cats, including Sunflower, stop too. Sunflower mews that they can't go on at this pace, and Graystripe says that they'll rest now. Fang and Graystripe catch some prey for the group, and Sunflower mumbles that the vole he's eating is very tasty. When the cats have finished up their prey, they spot a group of Twolegs arriving at the den dressed in black-and-white pelts. Lily says that these Twolegs round up cats whose Twolegs can't take care of them and give them to other Twolegs. Sunflower says that that doesn't sound so bad.
Graystripe mews urgently that they have to go to escape the Twolegs, but Sunflower says that he could run toward the Twolegs to distract them while the others escape. Lily protests, but the old tabby she-cat says that Sunflower is right, and that the old cats don't want to be a burden on the younger ones. After fetching Petunia, who lingered near the den, Graystripe pelts across the Thunderpath back to the group. However, he realizes that he just showed the Twolegs their location, and tells the cats that they have to go. Sunflower tells him to keep his fur on and that they'll handle this, and Graystripe leaves the old cats behind him.

Old tabby she-cat: "Yeah, and what's all this talk about hunting? We don't know how to do that. Maybe we should go back inside."
Sunflower: "At least we know we can survive in the Twoleg's den. We did it for so long."
Fang: "Some of us didn't survive. My mother, for one."
Sunflower: "Sorry, Honeysuckle. We all remember Gremlin."

Lily: "I know who they are. They round up cats when their Twolegs don't take care of them properly."
Graystripe: "Do Twolegs still take cats to the Cutter?"
Lily: "They do. I've heard that new Twolegs-usually young ones-come after a while and take them to their den."
Sunflower: "That doesn't sound too bad to me."
