"If I'm bloodying my paws already, why stop at one cat?"
This article contains major spoilers for the recently released book, Wind. Please proceed at your own discretion.
"ThunderClan has always been the natural leader of all the Clans. For that reason, we have to hold ourselves to a higher standard."
— Finchlight to Flamepaw about ThunderClan's legacy in River, page 118

Finchlight is a tortoiseshell she-cat[1] with a bit of orange in her fur[9] and amber eyes.[10]

Finchlight is a ThunderClan warrior who has served under Bramblestar's and Squirrelstar's leaderships in the lake territories. She was born as Finchkit to Sparkpelt and Larksong, along with her brothers, Flamekit and Flickerkit, the latter of which was stillborn. Moments after her birth, Larksong died, and she and Flamekit were fostered by Sorrelstripe while Sparkpelt recovered from her grief. She later became an apprentice, Finchpaw, with Cinderheart as her mentor. She was later exiled by Bramblestar's impostor, but rejoined ThunderClan under the leadership of her grandmother, Squirrelflight. Later, she became a warrior with the name of Finchlight. When Nightheart grew frustrated with their family's legacy, Finchlight struggled to understand his anger and was often caught between him and their mother during their disagreements. After her brother rejoined ThunderClan, Finchlight mentored Graypaw.

History[]

In The Broken Code arc[]

Lost Stars[]

Finchkit appears along with her brother Flamekit when Sparkpelt and Sorrelstripe come out of the nursery to listen to a Clan meeting. Later, as Sparkpelt speaks with Squirrelflight, Finchkit and Flamekit tumble around while being watched by Sorrelstripe. When Bramblestar's body is brought to camp, she and Flamekit are noted to be staring at it with sadness, along with Baykit and Myrtlekit.

The Silent Thaw[]

She is made an apprentice, Finchpaw, and her mentor is Cinderheart. Finchpaw and her brother nose around the camp wall, sniffing for signs of prey while their mentors murmur quietly from a distance. She follows along with Flamepaw, Lilyheart, and Cinderheart when the gray tabby warrior takes them to join up with Mousewhisker and Baypaw for training. Later on, the apprentice returns to camp along with her mentor, Berrynose, Poppyfrost, and Rosepetal after another hunting patrol. Finchpaw shares a thrush with her mother and Alderheart. Finchpaw helps Lilyheart, Birchfall and Cinderheart reweave brambles in the entrance to the warriors' den. When Bramblestar furiously scolds Sparkpelt for attempting to track down Lionblaze, Sparkpelt pleads not to be exiled because her kits are still apprentices.

Veil of Shadows[]

Finchpaw, although unnamed, is ordered by Bramblestar to pick ticks from the elders after Stormcloud tries to feed Brackenfur. She protests to her leader that she did not steal prey, but, Bramblestar retorts that she let it happen. She later follows her mentor, Cinderheart, and Bumblestripe, Blossomfall, Graystripe, Thriftear, and Sparkpelt in leaving ThunderClan following Graystripe's lecture to the impostor.

Darkness Within[]

When Bristlefrost suggests that StarClan could have been divided by the imposter, and this may be why the Clans are unable to communicate with them, several ThunderClan cats exchange nervous glances, and Finchpaw's eyes shine with anxiety.

The Place of No Stars[]

When Graystripe returns from his wander, he orders the apprentices to take the remaining prey off the fresh-kill pile to the elders.

A Light in the Mist[]

Larksong asks Bristlefrost how his kits are doing, and she replies they are doing well.

In the A Starless Clan arc[]

River[]

"Hey, which cat says I'm better than you? I passed my assessment first, that's all. Anyway, I suppose being with Sparkpelt might have helped me learn my warrior skills, but she talked about you all the time while we were in exile. She missed you with every heartbeat. And I know that you will get closer in time. Just be patient."
―Finchlight to Flamepaw about their mother River, page 141
Flamepaw reflects how their mother, Sparkpelt, was distant from her kits after Larksong and Flickerkit died, but she and Finchpaw grew close when they were both exiled by the impostor. He watches Sparkpelt warmly wish Finchpaw best of luck on her warrior assessment when she had distantly wished him luck. Finchpaw and the other apprentices begin their assessments, and she successfully passes, earning the warrior name of Finchlight. Her brother, however, does not pass. Flamepaw grows frustrated when cats ask about how Finchlight became a warrior and he did not.
Flamepaw nervously paces underneath the Highledge before his next warrior assessment, and Finchlight encourages him. However, Flamepaw fails again, and Finchlight attempts to cheer him up, though the littermates argue about ThunderClan's role following Ashfur's defeat. Finchlight believes that ThunderClan is superior compared to the other Clans, though Flamepaw sharply disagrees. She sharply scolds him that he needs to mature and maybe that id why he is still an apprentice. Later, the littermates make up, and Finchlight once again encourages Flamepaw that he will do well on his next try. Flamepaw reveals that he resents Sparkpelt for abandoning him, though Finchlight insists she was heartbroken after Larksong's death and she was exiled against her will. Their mother always cared for him, and he just needs to be patient. Their heartfelt conversation is interrupted when they hear Squirrelflight and Bramblestar arguing in the leader's den. When Flamepaw finally passes his assessment, he excitedly tells his sister first. She eagerly congratulates him, and wonders what name he would get. When Flamepaw decides to change his name, Finchlight supports her brother's decision, and cheers for the newly named Nightheart when Bramblestar accepts his choice.

Sky[]

"You should find somewhere else to eat. If you stay here, you'll give Sparkpelt indigestion."
―Finchlight to Nightheart Sky, page 30
After Nightheart injures himself trying to catch a squirrel, Lionblaze asks for Finchlight to replace him on the hunting patrol. Nightheart knows his sister is not going to appreciate that as she was just on the dawn patrol. The black tom reflects how his sister is often caught between him and their mother during their disagreements. Later, Finchlight and Sparkpelt share prey together but Nightheart catches their disapproving look when he joins them. Finchlight and Sparkpelt argue with Nightheart's decision to reject his original warrior name and turn his back on Firestar's legacy, and eventually Finchlight tells him to leave. Nightheart later spots Finchflight sharing prey with Myrtlebloom and Bayshine, and he laments how his denmates do not want to spend time with him. When Nightheart decides to leave ThunderClan for ShadowClan, Finchlight and Sparkpelt peer from the warriors' den with interest. While Sparkpelt is angry with his decision to leave, Finchlight is dismissive since she does not believe he will actually do it.

Squirrelflight's Hope[]

"Throw it again! I want to catch it too!"
―Finchkit to Sparkpelt Squirrelflight's Hope, page 402
Finchkit and her brothers Flamekit and Flickerkit are born to Larksong and Sparkpelt, but Flickerkit is stillborn. Larksong witnesses the birth of his kits and nuzzles Finchkit just as he dies from sickness. With the death of her mate and son, Sparkpelt is unable to look after Flamekit or Finchkit and she goes into a depression, where the two littermates are fostered by Sorrelstripe.
Bramblestar and Squirrelflight, Finchkit's grandfather and grandmother, find solace looking after their grandchildren to give Sorrelstripe a break, and Squirrelflight realizes that she is content to have grandchildren over another litter with Bramblestar. Daisy however, begins to worry that Finchkit and Flamekit would not see Sparkpelt as their mother, and instead turn to Sorrelstripe or her for motherly affection due to Sparkpelt's refusal to spend time with her children. When Squirrelflight returns from StarClan, she tells Sparkpelt that Larksong and Flickerkit will be watching over them. This enlightens Sparkpelt, and she decides to be the mother her kits need. Finchkit and Flamekit initially doubt their mother, but soon become happy that their mother wants to spend time with them.

In the Novellas[]

Spotfur's Rebellion[]

Finchpaw is seen returning from a hunting patrol, and Spotfur eyes the mouse that the younger apprentice had been carrying. After Spotfur's punishment of not being able to talk to any other cat for a quarter moon, Spotfur spies Finchpaw and Flamepaw pulling moss from the elders' den in an attempt to clean out and change their bedding.

Daisy's Kin[]

Daisy mentions that Finchpaw had brought her a mouse earlier, but she has not eaten it yet. Mousewhisker manages to drag Daisy out of camp. She notices Finchpaw, who she notes had grown up a lot, and must be getting a warrior ceremony soon. Later, she spots her taking prey from the fresh-kill pile with her brother.

Quotes[]

Flamepaw: "How long are we all going to keep talking about Ashfur, and what happened? How long are we going to make that the excuse for everything? I bet the other Clans aren't obsessing over it like we are."
Finchlight: "ThunderClan has always been the natural leader of all the Clans. For that reason, we have to hold ourselves to a higher standard."
Flamepaw: "That's mouse-brained! Try telling that to Tigerstar and see what he says. Or any of the other leaders. Anyway, Squirrelflight probably hates me now because she doesn't think my name should belong to a failure."
Finchlight: "Do you really think that? If you're really so immature that you believe that, then maybe it is the right thing that you're still an apprentice."
—Flamepaw arguing with his sister River, pages 118-119

"He's just being dramatic. He won't do it. He'll have calmed down by the morning."
―Finchlight about Nightheart's decision to leave Sky (book), page 316
