"If StarClan has told him he must go, then we must trust our warrior ancestors to take care of him and bring him safely back. They have never let us down before—why would they take our leader from us now if it wasn't the right thing to do?" |

Chapter description[]
- Firestar and Sandstorm begin preparing for their journey to save SkyClan. They visit Cinderpelt to stock up on traveling herbs. Sandstorm mentions that without a medicine cat joining them, she needs to learn as much about herbs as possible. The leader announces to his Clan that the two cats are ready to leave. His Clanmates below attempts to ask him where he's going, but Brightheart reminds ThunderClan to have faith in their ancestors. He says his goodbyes to the Clan and him and Sandstorm head towards the gorse tunnel entrance. He feels sorrow that he can't tell ThunderClan where his journey will take him. Sandstorm and Graystripe follow the tom out of camp. Firestar asks his friend if he would follow him to the forest's edge, but the warrior shakes his head. Graystripe tells the leader he will cover for ThunderClan at Gatherings. They say their goodbyes, and the three cats part ways.
- Sandstorm asks his mate where they should head first. Firestar recalls SkyClan fleeing the forest upstream. Sandstorm asks how far they will go, but Firestar tells her he trusts StarClan to guide them. They sneak past the RiverClan border until they reach the Twoleg bridge. While passing the river, Firestar remembers saving Bluestar from a pack of dogs by jumping into the body of water. The ginger tom feels exposed as the reach WindClan's borders. They two quickly hide as they spot a WindClan warrior hunting nearby. A group of WindClan warriors pick up their scent but shrug it off, and the two ThunderClan cats continue on their journey. Sandstorm challenged Firestar's decision to continue this journey, but Firestar kept his faith in StarClan. Sandstorm and Firestar catch a nearby mouse and rest until the Twolegs aren't as active.
- Firestar dreams of the forest, hoping he will find the SkyClan warriors, but his dreams are interrupted by the sound of a nearby dog. The two cats hide in a nearby hedge as the dog finds their scent. The dog tries to attack them through the bushes, but a Twoleg paw grabs the animal and pulls it away. Firestar checks the area for signs of danger, and they continue their journey once the coast is clear. Firestar and Sandstorm follow the river upstream for the next three days until they stop at the Thunderpath. Sandstorm notices the black surface hovering over the river, and they decide to travel from under the road. Multiple monsters blaze nearby, and they quickly run away from the Thunderpath. They rest near the river, and Sandstorm offers dock leaves to help the soreness on his pads.
- The ThunderClan leader falls asleep and finds a StarClan warrior in the sky. He can see Highstones from a distance and feels a wave of loneliness. The tom wakes up with his mate, and they continue their journey. Sandstorm hunts for both of them and returns with two voles. Firestar realizes that SkyClan must be further up the river bank and wonders if Sandstorm regrets joining him on this mission. The two cats fall asleep, and Firestar feels even lonelier with Sandstorm beside him.
