"When he joined ThunderClan he knew that he had found the place where he belonged. But if ThunderClan meant so much to him, why had he left to help a Clan that had been driven from the forest so long ago that no Clan remembered them?" |

Chapter description[]
- Firestar searches his surroundings and finds ducks in the water. The ground starts rumbling from nearby Twoleg feet, and he beckons Sandstorm to hide. They notice the Twolegs walk over the riverbank with long sticks to catch fish, and the two cats retreat when there is no sign of dogs. Sandstorm observes a storm coming soon, and the pair pick up their pace on their journey. Firestar's determination is draining as the trip continues. He thinks about the Clan's wellbeing and if the badger will return to ThunderClan. He remembers the Clans' alliance in the battle against BloodClan, as well as the power struggle for Sunningrocks. He watches his mate behind focus on the journey and keeps his mouth shut about his fears.
- Sandstorm catches a vole for them. As they share the piece of prey, they smell a nearby dog and a Twoleg. They wait out the animals until they are safe to keep moving. They look ahead upstream and only find more Twoleg nests. They decide to go around the Twolegplace and notice multiple monsters asleep or slowly moving on the Thunderpath. Firestar and Sandstorm quickly move over the dark black ground. They hide in a small hole to avoid the monsters roaring on the path and continue their expedition. Their hunger draws them to a nearby abandoned Twoleg nest filled with mice. Sandstorm cautiously enters the den with Firestar on the lookout. Firestar enters the den behind her and remembers his time as a kittypet when he was younger. His mind fills with memories of Hattie and Smudge living peacefully. He wonders if he would have been happier being a kittypet but quickly denies the thought.
- Sandstorm catches a couple of mice from within the kitchen and offers to spend the night in the den. Firestar refuses, and the she-cat doesn't fight him. They step outside and find significant winds and heavy storms. They struggle through the weather, and Firestar knows Sandstorm would like to find shelter, but they continue their path. Firestar imagines seeing Bluestar's face in the sky. The ground becomes slippery and icy, and the leader calls for his mate to be careful. After, Sandstorm slips, she lashes out at tom and accuses him of not wanting her to join him in the first place. Sandstorm scolds him, saying he wishes he was with Spottedleaf instead of her. Firestar doesn't say a word, and she runs away from the tom in the direction they came. He catches after her, but a tree falls over the river before the two cats. Firestar tells the she-cat to wait he makes sure it is safe to cross. He travels on top of the fallen tree to higher bank on the other side of the river. He calls out for his mate but sees her looking up in horror. The river had become a wave of water, and the leader climbs a tree to avoid it. He jumps down and notices the tree has been swept away, and Sandstorm is nowhere to be found.
