"Being a moor runner's not exactly safe. There are buzzards and dogs and foxes above-ground. They're just as dangerous in a cave-in. The better trained we are, the less risk there is. That's why we need to keep training our young'uns to tunnel. There'll come a time when we'll depend on the tunnels again."
— Flamepelt about moor runners in Tallstar's Revenge, page 41

Flamepelt is a dark ginger tom.[1]

Tallstar's Revenge[]

"I could hear ShadowClan voices at the end of the tunnel, then the rabbit's paws thumping closer. Stronger steps were on its tail. The patrol was heading straight toward me. I began scraping at the soil above my head. Claws out, I dug as hard and as hard as I could. The paw steps were thundering nearer, echoing against the walls of the tunnel. Another few moments and they'd smell me. A few moments after that, they'd crash right into me."
―Flamepelt describing his tunneling days Tallstar's Revenge , page 40
Flamepelt is a WindClan elder who is noted to be older than Lilywhisker. He is spotted by Tallkit resting on a low hummock near the elders' den, recounting a story from his days as a tunneler to Doepaw and Ryepaw. Midway through, Flamepelt describes entering a tunnel darker than the insides of a rock, though he could hear the quick running of a rabbit ahead. When Doepaw interrupts, claiming tunnel hunting is supposed to be easy, Flamepelt looks at her and asks if running blind in complete darkness sounds easy. Whiteberry adds that one misstep could make you hit a wall, and Flamepelt differentiates between a dead-end tunnel from one with an opening.
Once Whiteberry and Lilywhisker finish boasting, Flamepelt resumes, saying the rabbit had ventured beneath ShadowClan territory. Ryepaw gasps, saying the prey now belonged to ShadowClan since it crossed the border, but Flamepelt insists that WindClan owns the tunnels. When Tallkit questions how he knew it was ShadowClan land, Flamepelt explains that the soil smelled of pine sap. He continues, recounting how the rabbit raced onward as he neared it. Above, he heard paw steps in the forest, since he was close to the surface. Flamepelt adds that the ShadowClan patrol could hear him and mistake him for a rabbit and dig beneath, so he froze. Soon after, the rabbit darted toward an opening, and he hoped the patrol wouldn't find it and drive it back underground. Ryepaw asks if they did, and Flamepelt nods, explaining that the patrol broke into a run. He recounts his decision to block the tunnel to prevent ShadowClan cats from pursuing the rabbit further, Ryepaw asks how he managed it, and Flamepelt explains that he loosened the tunnel carefully without collapsing it entirely.
Flamepelt describes the patrol's voices growing louder, and he could hear the rabbit's paws thudding nearby. He clawed at the tunnel roof as quickly as possible, his claws scraping against the dirt. As the patrol neared, Flamepelt clawed harder since they could soon smell and then crash into him, with a final strike, the roof collapsed, and he leaped back just in time. Beyond the tunnel, he could hear the patrol find the rabbit, and he turned to head home. Flamepelt laments that the tunnels were in better condition back then and adds he would give anything to tunnel again. When Doepaw comments on the dangers of being a tunneler, Flamepelt ads on the dangers of the moor too and argues for training apprentices in the skill again. After Ryepaw remarks on the plentiful rabbits, Flamepelt quetions if another Clan might consider invading their territory. Heatherstar summons the Clan shortly after for a meeting, and Flamepelt leads the elders.
As the Clan prepares for the Gathering, Hawkheart watches Flamepelt and Whiteberry. When the visitors arrive at camp, Flamepelt invites Mole to sleep with the elders, noting it's the warmest spot in camp aside from the nursery. After Brackenwing's death, Flamepelt, Flailfoot, Whiteberry, and Stagleap work under Lilywhisker's directions to hook back stems at the elders' den entrance. Later, Flamepelt agrees to let Palebird assist in burying Brackenwing. When Sandgorse dies, Flamepelt sits by Lilywhisker in. As the visitors leave, he bids Sparrow farewell, wishing him good hunting. When Talltail prepares to make an announcement, Flamepelt, Lilywhisker, and Flailfoot emerge from the elders' den, their eyes shining with curiosity. When Talltail enters the elders' den, Flamepelt steps out, his fur catching the sunlight, and remarks to Lilywhisker about removing a tick from her tail the day before.
