"That sounds great, Flipclaw, but unfortunately, we can't all live inside your imagination. Only you can live there."
— Flywhisker to Flipclaw in Graystripe's Vow, page 65

Flywhisker is a striped gray tabby she-cat.[3]

Flywhisker is a kittypet, and a former ThunderClan warrior who served under Bramblestar's, the impostor's, and Squirrelflight's leaderships in the lake territories. She was born to Cinderheart and Lionblaze as Flykit along with her siblings, Snapkit and Spotkit, and had three older sibings: Fernsong, Hollytuft, and Sorrelstripe. She was renamed Flypaw and apprenticed to Twigbranch, though the pair struggled to work together and communicate. Afterwards, she earned her warrior name of Flywhisker. After rough times in ThunderClan, Flywhisker joined Thornclaw, Flipclaw, Snaptooth, and Graystripe on a journey to discover what it means to be a Clan cat. During the journey, she rejected Flipclaw's advances, and decided to become a kittypet with Snaptooth.

History[]

In the A Vision of Shadows arc[]

River of Fire[]

"We'll be good at it!"
―Flykit about helping Briarlight with her exercises River of Fire, page 42
Twigpaw makes the journey back to ThunderClan with Finpaw, and Sparkpelt leads them to the camp. When the two young cats enter, Twigpaw sees her old Clanmates again, her gaze passing over Cinderheart and Blossomfall. As they sit at the nursery's entrance, their kits frisk around their paws, playing joyfully.
A short time later, sickness begins to fall on ThunderClan. Alderheart is worried about Flykit and her siblings, since they have started venturing out of the nursery. He recalls how keen they are to explore, but imagines what strength they might need to ward off sickness.
As the medicine cats herd cats to the nursery, Alderheart sees Cinderheart with her kits, Blossomfall, and Ivypool. Blossomfall tells Briarlight, her sister, who Leafpool had moved to the nursery, that the kits can help with her exercises, and they hurtle themselves at the brown she-cat excitedly. Daisy stops them with her tail, and the small cats scramble over her; the cream she-cat warns them to be gentle.
A storm breaks out overhead ThunderClan's camp, with rain and lightning. Alderheart swiftly goes to the nursery, and as he enters, the ginger tabby gazes at Cinderheart, sheltering Snapkit, Flykit, and Spotkit from the cold. Blossomfall asks where they should go, and Alderheart suggests the elders' den, since Graystripe and Millie will be happy to see kits. The medicine cat sends the two queens with their kits to the warmer den, and races away back to the medicine den.
Alderheart wonders what might happen if the current raging sickness gets passed on to Cinderheart or Blossomfall's litters, but the queen spends the night with Flykit and her siblings in the elders' den. Alderheart ends up heading back to the nursery, having remembered Ivypool giving birth, and meets the silver-and-white she-cat's litter fondly. After a quick checkup, the young tom moves on to Cinderheart and her kits.
He notes that Flykit, Snapkit, and Spotkit are much older and bigger than Thriftkit, Bristlekit, and Flipkit. Cinderheart begs Alderheart not to disturb her sleeping son and daughters, as, according to the queen, they don't sleep much. Despite this, the gray she-cat strokes her resting kits affectionately, adding that she wouldn't want them any other way. Daisy says that Cinderheart's kits will be apprenticed quickly, and Alderheart agrees. Later, Dovewing comes back to the Clans with Tigerstar and visits ThunderClan's camp. Alderheart tells the gray she-cat the news about Cinderheart and Ivypool's new litters, and she listens eagerly.

The Raging Storm[]

«She'd learned that her apprentice worked better when they were in an unusual part of the forest. Fresh stimulation seemed to keep her focused, and so, whenever she could, Twigbranch challenged Flypaw with tricky battle moves or prey that was hard to catch.»
—Twigbranch about Flypaw The Raging Storm, chapter 17
Flypaw is now an apprentice with Twigbranch as her mentor. She is clearing twigs littering the training clearing, complaining about the work. Flypaw asks why Spotpaw and Stempaw can't help and points out that Plumpaw is stronger than her and would be better at dragging sticks. Twigbranch tells her that Plumpaw is hunting with her mentor and littermates, and Flypaw wonders why they can't hunt. Her mentor answers that she doesn't know enough hunting moves, to which Flypaw says she'd know some if Twigbranch would let her train instead of clearing sticks. Twigbranch answers that Bramblestar asked them to do it, and comments how her littermate Snappaw isn't complaining.
Snappaw drops the stick he was helping Finleap move, mewing he wants to be the strongest apprentice in ThunderClan. Flypaw scowls, telling him to not get too strong or else he'll be clearing every branch in the forest. She brightens when Finleap suggests battle training and crouches, sticking her hindquarters in the air, lashing her tail, and bares her teeth. Snappaw rushes to join her and they hiss at each other. Twigbranch leads Flypaw away to see how she does in an ambush. Flypaw gets distracted and pushed over multiple times, making Twigbranch snap.
Flypaw defends herself and believes Twigbranch is making it difficult on purpose because she wants her to fail. They try again, and Twigbranch is more gentle this time. Finleap praises Flypaw and calls her a natural, making her brighten. Twigbranch says there's no such thing as a natural and skill comes from work and training. Flypaw gives a stinging comment, mewing that she must be very skilled, since she trained for moons, which makes Twigbranch snap, saying she must learn respect. Finleap and Twigbranch discuss Flypaw in private, while Flypaw and Snappaw finish clearing the sticks. Then they go check the ShadowClan border, where they find Puddleshine trapped beneath silverthorn, and Flypaw and Snappaw are sent to fetch help from camp.
Twigbranch recalls how she brought Flypaw out at dawn to practice hunting, but her apprentice was too tired to listen to her. After trying to help, Twigbranch eventually sent Flypaw to clean the elder's den. Finleap asks Twigbranch if she is still having trouble with Flypaw, and she says that Flypaw's heart is either not in it or she is expecting too much from her apprentice. Finleap says that Flypaw has just begun training and tells Twigbranch to give her time, but Twigbranch says that they don't seem to connect and Flypaw seems to take criticism personally. Later, Twigbranch sees Alderheart tend to a patient and realizes she should trust her instincts with Flypaw. She searches the elder's den and asks around for her apprentice but Flypaw is nowhere to be found.
Flypaw attempts to catch a bird under Twigbranch's guidance, but barely misses. Flypaw looks dejected as Twigbranch continues to be tough on her, and says she just likes to follow her instincts. Twigbranch continues to lecture her, so Flypaw apologizes and runs off to Cinderheart, clearly hurt. Cinderheart then wraps her tail protectively around Flypaw.
Flypaw asks Twigbranch if she has seen Finleap, but doesn't seem concerned. She says that Snappaw was supposed to train with Finleap but the tom wasn't in his nest that morning. Flypaw asks if they are going to practice hunting, and then asks Twigbranch if she is looking for something. Flypaw points out a squirrel but is then distracted by the ThunderClan border patrol escorting SkyClan cats. Flypaw asks Lionblaze what SkyClan wants, and he tells her that Finleap knows more than he does. Flypaw tells Finleap that Snappaw was looking for him. Flypaw asks Twigbranch what she thinks SkyClan will say, and Twigbranch shoos her towards her littermates.
Flypaw chats with Snappaw and Eaglepaw on the way to the Gathering. Flypaw tells Twigbranch that she hopes Harepaw and Dapplepaw are at the gathering so that she could show them her new moves. When she spots the other apprentices, she joins them. Flypaw is later spotted telling Harepaw that Twigbranch was going to show her how to catch a buzzard.
Twigbranch waits for Flypaw to catch up to her before training with Snappaw and Finleap. Flypaw asks questions about the distance between Finleap and Twigbranch, but Twigbranch avoids them. Twigbranch says she will show Flypaw somewhere new, as she has noticed that fresh stimulation is the way to keep her apprentice focused. Flypaw follows Twigbranch to the edge of Clan territory. Twigbranch tests Flypaw when she smells mouse and works out a way to catch it. Twigbranch then asks Flypaw to follow her when she catches Tree's scent. Flypaw tells Tree and Twigbranch that the other apprentices think SkyClan should have stayed, and that only the leaders wanted SkyClan gone. The apprentice then suggests that they could find cats from each clan to convince SkyClan to come back.
Flypaw is on the quest to bring SkyClan back, along with cats from every clan. The cats encounter a raging river that can only be crossed using a tree trunk, and Flypaw asks what will happen if she falls in. Twigbranch tells her that she won't let that happen. Twigbranch crosses the tree behind Flypaw, and the two cats make it to the other side. Twigbranch encourages Flypaw after she stumbles and stays by her apprentice while she struggles to cross the uneven terrain. Twigbranch offers to hunt for Flypaw but she insists to hunt as well, which fills her mentor with pride. Flypaw helps Finleap hunt after Twigbranch tells her to, and comes back with a sparrow she caught on her first try. Flypaw witnesses a fight between Tree and Finleap and asks Twigbranch what it was about. Flypaw tells Twigbranch she doesn't know what is wrong with Tree when she is asked, and adds that he has been talking to himself since the other she-cat left.
Flypaw helps Nectarpaw shape ferns with her paws. Later, she demonstrates a hunting crouch to other SkyClan apprentices.
Violetshine says that Flypaw should get across the tree-bridge first. Flypaw then says she will never worry about having to cross the tree-bridge to the Gathering ever again. Twigbranch tells her not to worry because this will be the last river the cats will have to cross for a while. Flypaw then successfully crosses the river, along with Twigbranch and Finleap.
Flypaw noses in between Twigbranch and Finleap during a Gathering.

In The Broken Code arc[]

Lost Stars[]

Flywhisker volunteers to go on a patrol that Bristlefrost leads. Due to the danger of the ice the cats are walking on, Flywhisker suggests heading back and going around the other side of the lake.

Darkness Within[]

Flywhisker goes to the special Gathering held to honor the cats who fell in battle with the imposter. She, along with Snaptooth, walk past Bristlefrost and Rootspring as they talk about some of the problems ThunderClan has, and how they are trying to rebuild after being torn apart. Soon after their Gathering, Flywhisker is also present for the argument between Thornclaw, Lionblaze, and Squirrelflight. Flywhisker is curious about the dispute between the older warriors, her eyes shining as she watches them argue. Flywhisker appears to agree with Thornclaw, her tail twitching the entire time as she listens to the senior warrior bring up the point that Firestar's kin have been leading ThunderClan for a long time.
Flywhisker is one of the cats who agrees with Flipclaw's suggestion of a wander, and she is joined by Snaptooth and Thornclaw. Shocked, Squirrelflight looks at her warriors and asks if they have plans to return to ThunderClan. Flywhisker is honest, and says that she does not know for sure if she will return. Graystripe, seeing the arguing between Thornclaw and Lionblaze, also decides to join Flywhisker and the others, deciding that this is not the ThunderClan he knows.
Bristlefrost later thinks of Flywhisker, saying that her Clan is unraveling like a nest. She thinks that Flywhisker, Snaptooth, and the others still have not returned yet, and is not sure if they ever will. She tries to not lose hope, and wishes for Flywhisker and the wandering cats to return to ThunderClan.

The Place of No Stars[]

Flipclaw brings back the terrible news of Snaptooth and Flywhisker being kittypets. Hollytuft calls the pair traitors, causing Cinderheart, Snaptooth and Flywhisker's mother, to defend her kits.

In the Super Editions[]

Squirrelflight's Hope[]

After completing her training, Flypaw earns her warrior name of Flywhisker.

Graystripe's Vow[]

Flywhisker: "I've often wondered what it would be like to be a kittypet."
Snaptooth: "Really? You'd give up your freedom?"
Flywhisker: "Maybe not. Not yet, anyway. But kittypets always know where their food is coming from, and they have somewhere warm to sleep every night. It doesn't sound that bad!"
Snaptooth: "Of course it's bad! And only a mouse-brain would think it wasn't."
Flywhisker: "Mouse-brain yourself!"
—Flywhisker arguing with Snaptooth about becoming a kittypet Graystripe's Vow, chapter 4
Flywhisker is part of a group of young warriors who are lounging in camp. Squirrelflight orders them to go on a hunting patrol, but the group ignores her at first. Squirrelflight becomes visibly angry and the group finally gets up, with Flywhisker muttering for the deputy to keep her fur on. Flywhisker joins Snaptooth, Flipclaw, Graystripe, and Thornclaw to leave ThunderClan for a moon to wander. Lionblaze tries to get his kits to think before they make the decision, but they are not willing to listen to him.
Flywhisker argues with Thornclaw why they are stopping in ThunderClan territory before leaving, but Graystripe steps in to back the senior warrior up before the cats can argue. Flywhisker begrudgingly relents, and she and her brother hunt. She comes back carrying a blackbird and comments how hunting for the small group is easier than hunting for the Clan with all the cats who can't hunt for themselves. She then realizes that Graystripe, one of the elders who doesn't hunt, is there and she stops what she is saying. Graystripe asks the group what they would do if somebody in the group were injured or expecting kits, and Flipclaw says he would make sure Flywhisker was well-fed if she was expecting. She says that she doesn't want kits at all right now and tells Flipclaw that he's not her type anyway. Graystripe hopes that Flipclaw will take Flywhisker's rejection gracefully. Flipclaw continues to press the subject, and Flywhisker rejects him again.
Flywhisker wonders what life would be like as a kittypet, and Snaptooth tries to discourage her. Thornclaw becomes frustrated at their squabbling and decides to leave the group to wander alone. As the wander continues, Graystripe becomes close with the young cats, but he surprises them when he declares that he is going to the Tribe of Rushing Water. Her and the other young warriors look nervous, and while Graystripe is initially frustrated, he decides to stick with them for a little longer. When dogs try to attack the cats, Flywhisker climbs up a tree, and Twolegs eventually take the dogs away. Graystripe tells the group he is finally leaving for the mountains, and asks the younger cats if they would like to join him. Flywhisker and Snaptooth decide they do not want to travel that far and will stick to Clan territory. As Graystripe leaves, Flywhisker asks StarClan to light his path.
Graystripe reminisces on the night where Flywhisker broke Flipclaw's heart, and he assumed that that was one of the reasons Flipclaw had decided to accompany Graystripe on his quest to the mountains.

In the Novellas[]

Spotfur's Rebellion[]

Flywhisker: "Don't do this, Spotfur. It sounds like you're trying to rebel against our leader. That's a good way to get yourself hurt. To get other cats hurt."
Spotfur: "I'm not trying—"
Flywhisker: "Don't you remember what we've always heard about Darktail and ShadowClan? The apprentices and young warriors of ShadowClan didn't want to listen to Rowanstar. They didn't want to follow the code. And it was easy for a rogue to take control. Because some of the Clan wasn't loyal."
Spotfur: "It's not that I don't want to follow the code. But I think what Bramblestar has been doing lately is against the code."
Flywhisker: "I don't agree. And you'd be a mouse-brain to act against Bramblestar. You've seen how he's punishing cats who break the code. How do you think he'd treat a cat who tried to turn his own Clan against him?"
—Flywhisker disagreeing with Spotfur's plan to rebel Spotfur's Rebellion, chapter 7
Millie mentions to Spotpaw that Flypaw already brought Graystripe a vole to prevent the elder from getting fed twice. She sleeps in the apprentices' den next to Spotpaw, complaining when her sister shakes water from her fur as a storm rolls in. Later, she calls to Spotpaw and Stempaw to inform them that Twigbranch wants dry nests for the apprentices' den.
After becoming warriors, Snaptooth mentions how Flywhisker and Spotfur had witnessed his strange behavior when he was sick as a kit, using this example to dismiss Bramblestar's odd behavior. When the leader's sickness worsens, Flywhisker asks Spotfur what will happen to him, and the sisters watch Squirrelflight pacing anxiously around camp. When Shadowpaw's idea to bring Bramblestar into the snow causes the leader to appear dead, the Clan shares their memories of Bramblestar, Flywhisker mentioning that he encouraged her during her apprenticeship.
Moons later, Snaptooth invites Spotfur to hunt with him and Flywhisker after Spotfur's punishment not to speak is over, and Flywhisker expresses her joy that she can speak to Spotfur again. Spotfur confronts her siblings about Bramblestar's tyrannical behavior, but neither support her, and they drop the subject.

Daisy's Kin[]

Daisy recalls that Flywhisker had been one of the cats who had left ThunderClan on a wander. She wonders if she should've gone with Flywhisker and the others that day.

Personality[]

Flywhisker is a bright[5] and perceptive[6] she-cat. She can be argumentative,[7] especially as an apprentice, and is easily distracted. Her poor performance as an apprentice led her to be harsh on herself.[5] She was compelled by criticism of ThunderClan's stability after the exile of the impostor,[8] and though she was nervous to leave the territories,[9] she stuck by her decision to become a kittypet.[10]

Relationships[]

Twigbranch[]

Twigbranch: "That was the worst defensive move I've ever seen."
Flypaw: "I didn't expect you to hit me so hard."
Twigbranch: "I was ambushing you! This isn't the nursery. You're not play-fighting now."
Flypaw: "You want me to fail. That's why you're making it so hard. How am I meant to know what to do if you just keep knocking me off my paws?"
—Twigbranch frustrated with Flypaw The Raging Storm, chapter 1
Twigbranch was impatient with her apprentice and critical of her not taking training seriously, worried that her apprentice's poor performance would reflect badly on her as a mentor. Moreover, she didn't trust her apprentice to complete tasks alone, though their frustration was mutual: Flypaw fought back with snarky remarks about Twigbranch's long apprenticeship.[5] Criticism left Flypaw discouraged, and Twigbranch felt that Flypaw saw any criticsm as a personal attack.[11] However, their training gradually improved[12] as Twigbranch allowed Flypaw to go at her own pace.[13] Flypaw was proud of the battle moves Twigbranch taught her, and was eager to show off at the Gathering. Flywhisker's decision to live as a kittypet greatly troubled Twigbranch.[10]

Lionblaze and Cinderheart[]

"Bristlefrost could understand why [Cinderheart] was so desperate to hear what had happened to her kits. No cat had seen or scented them since they had left, and most of the Clan—except for Cinderheart and her mate, Lionblaze—had been far too preoccupied with the Clan's troubles to give much thought to them."
―Bristlefrost about Flywhisker's parents The Place of No Stars (book), chapter 1
As an apprentice, Flypaw demonstrated trust in her mother, seeking comfort from her after being berated by Twigbranch for missing a catch.[14] After becoming a warrior, Lionblaze begged Flywhisker and Snaptooth not to act rashly when they decided to leave ThunderClan[15] and the parents worried over her during her and Snaptooth's absence; when Flipclaw returned without them, Lionblaze was dejected. Cinderheart fiercely defended her children when Hollytuft accused the two of being traitors.[10]

Spotfur and Snaptooth[]

"Sickness makes every cat weird. Remember when we were kits and I got that fever? I thought I was an eagle for a while. You and Flywhisker had to talk me out of jumping out of a tree to prove I could fly."
―Snaptooth recalling a memory to Spotfur Spotfur's Rebellion, chapter 5
Flypaw often trains with Snappaw due to their mentors' friendship.[5] She spends time with her brother often,[16] eventually leaving the Clan with him[8] to become kittypets under the care of the same Twoleg.[1] Spotfur grieves when she learns of her littermates' choice to live as kittypets.[10] Before leaving ThunderClan, Flywhisker was relieved when Spotfur's command of silence was broken so that she could talk to her sister. Even so, she refused to support Spotfur's rebellion against Bramblestar, horrified that her sister would go against their leader.[17]

Flipclaw[]

"I don't want kits at all right now—not with everything ThunderClan is going through. But even if I did, I'm not interested in you that way, Flipclaw. You're not my type."
―Flywhisker rejecting Flipclaw Graystripe's Vow, chapter 4
Flipclaw not so subtly reveals his romantic interest in Flywhisker, attempting to assert his eagerness to protect her and any kits she may have. However, Flywhisker bluntly rejects his advances, devastating the young tom.[7] Moreover, Flipclaw was unable to convince Flywhisker to return to ThunderClan after she became a kittypet.[10]
