Chapter description[]
- On a cold, snowy night, a large tom, Oakheart, takes two kits into the RiverClan nursery. The queen inside, Graypool, asks whose kits they were when Oakheart asks if she would take care of them. He tells her he found them in the forest and Graypool asks what kind of cat would leave her kits in the forest, especially in such snowy weather. Oakheart tells her it was possible it was rogues or Twolegs then tells her to please take them—her other kits had died and these would too without someone to look after them. Graypool agrees to take them, but still questions why a mother would leave her kits alone in the forest in leaf-bare. Oakheart firmly states that he did not steal the kits, and Graypool eyes Oakheart asking if he is telling the whole truth. Oakheart states that he had told her all she needs to know and goes to find her fresh kill, leaving Graypool to protest in the den by herself. Graypool licks the kits and finds a faint scent that she does not recognize. She sniffs again, discovering that the two kits carry the scent of an enemy Clan.
