"As if Tigerstar would believe me. I've just joined the Clan. Nobody's going to take my word over the word of three Clanborn warriors. I don't want to hurt Spireclaw, or I'd be fighting those cats now. How can I challenge his mother?"
— Fringewhisker to Sunbeam about Berryheart's treatment in Sky, page 264

Fringewhisker is a white she-cat with brown splotches[7] and amber eyes.[8]

Fringewhisker is a ShadowClan warrior under Tigerstar's leadership in the lake territories, and previously also served under Leafstar's leadership. Fringekit was born in the gorge to Mintfur and Nettlesplash of SkyClan along with her littermates, Gravelkit, Nectarkit, and Palekit. When SkyClan was driven out of the gorge by Darktail's group, Mintfur and Nettlesplash opted to stay near the gorge to raise their kits instead of traveling to try and find ThunderClan. Fringekit and her siblings grew up in the gorge after Darktail’s rogues abandoned it to follow Alderpaw back to the lake. Her parents tried to have the kits behave like Clan cats, so they gave them apprentice names, with Fringekit becoming Fringepaw, and unofficially mentored them. When Hawkwing led a patrol back to the gorge to find the missing SkyClan cats, Fringepaw and her family were found and traveled to the lake, where Fringepaw was given an official mentor, Harrybrook. She later earned her warrior name, Fringewhisker, and switched Clans to be with her mate, Spireclaw, in ShadowClan. However, her decision to leave SkyClan was fiercely opposed by Berryheart and other ShadowClan warriors, and Fringewhisker was required to complete three difficult tasks to prove her worth.

History[]

In the A Vision of Shadows arc[]

Darkest Night[]

When Hawkwing is shown where Frecklewish is being held captive, Fringepaw is seen with the group, staying hidden in the treeline with her siblings. Violetpaw comes up with a way for Frecklewish to escape, with the medicine cat managing to jump out of the Twoleg nest onto some steps, and then into a tree. The cats race away as a Twoleg chases them, and Fringepaw watches with wide eyes from below. Later on, as the travelers approach SkyClan territory, Cherrytail exclaims that she can smell their Clanmates' scent. Gravelpaw is skeptical of this, but Fringepaw affirms that it is the same scent as theirs, only muskier. Later in the day, they arrive at SkyClan's camp, and are bewildered to see cats running around building dens. Hawkwing asks what's happening, and they tell him Leafstar will explain. Finpaw looks at Fringepaw and her littermates, commenting that the apprentices' den is going to be very full. Once in camp, Twigpaw says the same, noting that the den doesn't have enough nests yet for everyone. Leafstar interrupts that Violetpaw and her sister won't need nests in the apprentices' den, as it's time for them to be warriors. Violetpaw gets excited, and Fringepaw and her littermates crowd around the pair.

Darkest Night Bonus Scene[]

In the bonus scene, Nettlesplash is out hunting, and thinks about his young kits. When he returns to his family, he is seen sitting outside, watching his kits play while Fringekit and Mintfur share tongues. The she-kit is shy, but tentatively leaves her mother and inches closer to her littermates. Palekit notices and tackles Fringekit, bringing her into the game. Mintfur and Nettlesplash are content, commenting on how much their litter has grown. Abruptly, Nectarkit sits up, pushing Fringekit off of her. She comments that there's a moaning noise she doesn't recognize, and Mintfur tells the kits to go inside the den. Nettlesplash goes into the forest, finding that the source of the moaning is Dragonfly, who is very sick. He decides to help her, and with his and Mintfur's help, she completely heals within a quarter moon. She shares her catch with the family, and Fringekit nuzzles into the yellow tabby's side. Nettlesplash is warmed by the sight, and watches the she-cat lick the kit's head.
Later, after Dragonfly has left, the kits argue over which type of prey is the best, but Fringekit mews softly that she liked the pigeons Dragonfly used to hunt. Nettlesplash sighs, lost in thought about SkyClan. Moments later, a rabbit runs across the small clearing. Nettlesplash realizes that some cat is chasing it, and orders his kits to hide. They dive beneath a bush, hiding until Dragonfly and Darktail leave. Once Mintfur returns from hunting, Fringekit and her siblings are given the mice their mother has caught.

River of Fire[]

After returning to SkyClan, Fringepaw has been assigned Harrybrook as a mentor.

The Raging Storm[]

She and Gravelpaw are practicing battle moves besides the apprentices' den when Finleap sneaks out from ThunderClan to see Reedclaw and is caught. He is forced to spend the night in SkyClan, seeing Sunnypaw watch Fringepaw launch a play attack on Gravelpaw. Sunnypaw calls out that she should go for his hind paws and not the front as Gravelpaw knocks his sister away with ease.

In the A Starless Clan arc[]

River[]

"I've spoken with Fringewhisker, and this wasn't a decision she came to lightly. As much as she loves SkyClan, she loves Spireclaw more, and she's willing to do whatever it takes to be with him."
―Leafstar about Fringewhisker's decision to leave SkyClan River (book), page 206
Fringewhisker has fallen in love with a ShadowClan warrior named Spireclaw from when she guarded the impostor's prison in ShadowClan's camp. After the impostor's defeat, the two hoped to be together with promise of changes being made to the warrior code to allow cats to change Clans to be with their mate. Fringewhisker and Spireclaw sit close together at a Gathering when Mistystar announces these changes. After these changes are approved, Leafstar announces that Fringewhisker is leaving SkyClan to join Spireclaw in ShadowClan. At her trial, Fringewhisker uses her strength to push a heavy branch in ShadowClan's camp, and is accepted as a full warrior of ShadowClan. Berryheart and other older warriors call the trial a sham.

Sky[]

"But Fringewhisker wasn't born here. She wasn't raised here. Who knows what's in her heart? We should never have taken her in. If she were a true warrior, she'd never have abandoned her Clan."
―Berryheart about Fringewhisker Sky (book), page 267
Berryheart continues to express her disapproval in Fringewhisker being a part of ShadowClan. When greencough plagues ShadowClan, Berryheart blames Fringewhisker for the illness since SkyClan dealt with whitecough before she left to join ShadowClan. When Rowankit dies from the illness, Berryheart blames Fringewhisker for it, seeing it as proof that their Clan made a mistake when they agreed to change the warrior code and views outsiders like Fringewhisker as a liability to ShadowClan's welfare.
During a hunting patrol with Berryheart, Whorlpelt, and Yarrowleaf, Fringewhisker catches a squirrel after a SkyClan patrol chases it, though Berryheart and the others encourage her to give it to SkyClan. However, Berryheart then accuses Fringewhisker of disloyalty and calls for a reevaluation of her status as a ShadowClan cat. Tigerstar and Cloverfoot scold her for giving away ShadowClan prey, and the Clan leader punishes her with catching three pieces of prey. As Fringewhisker leaves to hunt, Sunbeam races to catch up with her. Fringewhisker admits how Berryheart, Whorlpelt, and Yarrowleaf convinced her to give the prey to SkyClan and she's afraid to confront Spireclaw's mother. Sunbeam confronts her mother for her behavior towards Fringewhisker, though Berryheart insists she cannot let another cat pretend to be loyal after Darktail. Spireclaw later argues with Berryheart for her treatment towards Fringewhisker.

Shadow[]

When Sunbeam pulls Nightheart aside, Spireclaw crosses the clearing and congratulates her, with Fringewhisker at his side. She comments to Nightheart how she knows it's hard to leave your birth clan, but that he won't regret it, because Sunbeam is a great cat. Later, when Berryheart is questioning Nightheart's loyalty, Sunbeam mentions Fringewhisker's loyalty. When Berryheart confronts Tigerstar, Fringewhisker is seen with Spireclaw, their pelts bushed out in anger. When Berryheart announces there will be three tasks instead of two, she comments that Fringewhisker will have to do two more. Spireclaw protests, claiming that Fringewhisker is already part of the Clan. Fringewhisker silences Spireclaw, and agrees to do two more tasks.

Thunder[]

When Sunbeam is thinking about how Nightheart had tried to settle into ShadowClan, she notes how welcoming some ShadowClan cats had been to Fringewhisker. Later, When Sunbeam tries to speak to the ShadowClan cats, Fringewhisker gives her a nod. Later, when Sunbeam is looking at the ShadowClan cats, Fringewhisker and Spireclaw dip their heads to her. When Squirrelstar announces that she passed her trials, Fringewhisker yowls congrats to her. Fringewhisker is seen staring warmly at her when she herself announces she is a ThunderClan warrior. When Berryheart exclaims that she has many ShadowClan cats support, Fringewhisker is seen exchanging an alarmed glance with Spireclaw.

Hawkwing's Journey[]

Although unnamed, she is one of the four kits of Mintfur and Nettlesplash. Hawkwing hears their terrified cries as he approaches the nursery during a massive attack by a group of rogues. Fidgetkit, Snipkit, and Curlykit tell Hawkwing that they'll defend the younger kits when he races over to protect them.
After the battle, SkyClan is separated, but slowly begins to reform into a group. Mintfur, Nettlesplash, and their four kits are seen among the cats. SkyClan decides to go and look for new territory, with the other Clans. Mintfur and Nettlesplash say their kits are too young to travel, and decide to stay behind in familiar land. The gray tabby she-cat sweeps her kits closer, meowing that perhaps they'll meet again, and that they'll miss the Clan terribly.

Squirrelflight's Hope[]

She is now a warrior named Fringewhisker.
