"I miss you too. And I wonder what it would have been like if we'd stayed together. But we chose to separate for a reason, and that reason hasn't gone away. I love Mosspelt now, but you'll always be special to me. You must never feel alone. I'll always be here. As your friend."
— Frogleap to Leopardfur after Whiteclaw's death in Leopardstar's Honor, page 264

Frogleap is a muscular[9] gray tom[10] with a striped tail,[11] a broad head,[9] and amber eyes.[12]

Frogleap was a warrior of RiverClan under Hailstar's and Crookedstar's leaderships in the forest territories. He was born as Frogkit to Lakeshine and Cedarpelt along with his sister Sunkit. He was apprenticed as Frogpaw to Timberfur, and later earned his warrior name, Frogleap. He formed a strong relationship with Leopardfur by helping her train Whitepaw, but the two parted ways before it became romantic due to Leopardfur's headstrong dedication to her deputy duties and Frogleap's desire to start a family. Frogleap became mates with Mosspelt and the two had three kits: Dawnkit, Woodkit, and Robinkit. While fishing in a strong storm, a tree branch fell and hit his head, and Frogleap drowned in the strong current. He went to StarClan and was shortly joined by his two sons, and gave Leopardfur a life for devotion.

Crookedstar's Promise[]

"He collects a reed for every warrior he's fought and weaves it into his bed."
―Frogleap talking about Loudbelly Crookedstar's Promise, page 461
Frogkit is born to Cedarpelt and Lakeshine, along with his sister, Sunkit. He is first introduced when Willowbreeze tells Crookedjaw that Lakeshine has had her kits, including Lakeshine let her groom one of them. Willowbreeze notes that they're very cute. Frogkit and his sister are very playful, getting caught by Graypaw playing a game of moss ball with Piketooth and Voleclaw. He is later mentioned when Oakheart says that he's glad he doesn't have to sleep in the nursery because Frogkit and Sunkit were mewling very loudly.
Frogkit and Sunkit are shown to be very happy to have new denmates when Shimmerpelt gives birth to Blackkit and Skykit, commenting on how much fun they will have. Frogkit tells his sister that he doesn't want to be part of ThunderClan. Later on, Frogkit is found with Blackkit and Crookedjaw trying to persuade Crookedjaw to put them on the patrol to scare the Twolegs off. Frogkit spits that the cats will shred them, and asks Crookedjaw to show him the forepaw slash move. Crookedjaw replies, that Lakeshine won't let the kits learn battle moves. Frogkit later yowls the hunting patrol is back and runs off to find the best piece of prey.
Later on, Frogkit and his denmate, Skykit, attempt to head out of camp to find where Brightsky and her kits were buried to see if they were really dead, since Ottersplash didn't let them see the vigil. He is later seen happily playing on the ice in camp. Frogkit is apprenticed to an unknown warrior and given the name, Frogpaw. His sister, Sunpaw, is apprenticed to Voleclaw. He appears to be a very excited apprentice, wanting to go on hunting and border patrols.
Frogpaw is with Sunpaw, yowling that they will avenge Sunningrocks when ThunderClan takes the land, and they both tumble to the ground. Frogpaw is then with Sedgepaw and Blackpaw, asking permission to go out of camp. Frogpaw becomes a warrior, earning the name, Frogleap, while his sister, Sunpaw, becomes Sunfish. Frogleap is the first cat, along with Sunfish, to protest when Sunstar comes to RiverClan camp to claim Sunningrocks for ThunderClan. Crookedjaw orders the two to stand still, and seems to agree with them on having a battle. Hailstar says that rocks are not worth fighting for, but Frogleap disagrees with his decision. Crookedjaw snaps at Frogleap due to him interrupting Hailstar. Frogleap later appears with Loudbelly splashing through the reedbed, their pelts spiked, for the two are nervous, as Crookedjaw is going to the Moonstone to receive his nine lives.
Frogleap clusters around Timberfur, along with Echomist, Owlfur, and Lakeshine, all waiting for Timberfur's orders, they are said to be keen and ready for duty. Frogleap weaves reeds into the elder's den when Crookedstar calls to him. He asks what Crookedstar needs. Crookedstar answers by telling him to lead a hunting patrol, along with Reedtail, Blackclaw, and Leopardfur.

Leopardstar's Honor[]

Frogleap: "I guess other cats are less selfish than me. They can put their Clan before their own needs. But I want kits, and a mate who has time for me. And I've come to realize that means I need a mate who's just a warrior, like me."
Leopardfur: "You're not just a warrior. You're special. Like me. Together we can make RiverClan strong."
Frogleap: "That's your destiny. Not mine. I want to belong to RiverClan. You want to lead it. You want nine lives. I only want one, and I don't want to waste it waiting for the cat I love to make time for me."
Leopardfur: "Would a life with me really be wasted?"
Frogleap: "Not if it was our life to share. But you want to share your life with all of RiverClan. And I don't want to get in the way."
Leopardfur: "I'm sorry. I love you, but I have to follow the path StarClan has laid out for me."
—Frogleap and Leopardfur talking about their future Leopardstar's Honor, pages 169-170
Frogkit plays hide-and-seek with Sunkit, Skykit, Blackkit, Leopardkit, Loudkit, Sedgekit, and Reedkit, and he and his sister hide in the sedge next to the elders' den. When it is Blackkit's turn to seek, Frogkit and Sunkit resume their position near the elders' den. Frogkit perceives Leopardkit as talking too much, and as apprentices, Frogleap points out that Leopardpaw is still small for being five moons old and a pike might eat her, teasing her for being a drypaw. Leopardpaw trains with Frogpaw on battle moves and frequently beats him. Skypaw and Sunpaw tease Leopardpaw for liking Frogpaw, but the golden she-cat insists they just train together. When Skypaw fails her warrior assessment, Frogpaw agrees with the others they should wait for their warrior names until Skypaw passes her assessment. He later earns his warrior name of Frogleap along with the rest of his denmates.
Frogleap attends Leopardfur's patrol to Sunningrocks to mark the border, along with Whitefang, Sunfish, Stonefur, Ottersplash, and Rippleclaw. A ThunderClan patrol confronts them, led by Redtail, ThunderClan's deputy. Redtail provokes Leopardfur to a fight, and despite Whitefang's warning, Leopardfur's meet his challenge. Sunfish and Frogleap fight Lionheart, and he saves Leopardfur when she is pinned by Redtail and Mousefur; Leopardfur is impressed by his skills as she always saw him as a clumsy kit. The battle stops when Lionheart kills Whitefang, and Frogleap helps carry his body back to camp. Sunfish's wounds from the battle get infected and she grows weaker; after Leopardfur visits her in the medicine cat den, Frogleap asks how his sister is doing, telling Leopardfur she can be honest with him. Leopardfur admits she's getting weaker, and Frogleap insists she's strong, revealing how he regrets he hadn't done more in the battle to protect her. Sunfish later dies from the infection.
Frogleap overhears Leopardfur struggle to mentor Whitepaw, and explains the importance of scenting stagnant water and running water as frogs prefer still water. He guides Whitepaw to catch a nearby frog, and as the apprentices goes to catch another one, Frogleap explains to Leopardfur that Whitepaw is struggling to listen to her both as a mentor and as a maternal figure. Leopardfur takes Frogleap's advice and is pleased when Whitepaw begins to listen to her. Frogleap continues to assist with Whitepaw's training, and pretends to sneak up on him during a training session. Whitepaw passes, and both Frogleap and Leopardfur believe he is ready for his warrior assessment. When they return to camp, Frogleap joins a battle patrol to Sunningrocks to confront ThunderClan. The patrol returns with Oakheart dead, and Leopardfur is relieved to see Frogleap alive, though heavily grieving their deputy. Leopardfur grumbles about missing the battle, but Frogleap insists she saved Blackclaw from a pike. Frogleap is pleased when Leopardfur is named deputy and Whiteclaw is named a warrior, though teases Whiteclaw that they can do some serious hunting now.
After the Gathering, Frogleap speaks with Leopardfur alone about their future, noting how this is the first time they've been alone since she's been named deputy. Leopardfur insists she can make time for him, but Frogleap reveals he was hoping to become mates and start a family one day, but realizes that lies in the way of Leopardfur's plans for herself. Frogleap wants Leopardfur to succeed, but he doesn't want his plans to get in her way, and Leopardfur hopes this isn't a decision she is going to regret. Two moons later, Frogleap finds comfort with Mosspelt, a fellow warrior, and Leopardfur feels slightly jealous. Frogleap and Mosspelt join a hunting patrol with Leopardfur, Emberdawn, and Reedtail, and they come across ShadowClan hunting in their territory. The patrol does nothing as Crookedstar gave Brokenstar permission to hunt, and Frogleap notes they are only trying to prevent starvation. They come across a Twoleg hunting fish, and formulate a plan to steal a fish. While part of the patrol tears through the Twoleg's den as a distraction, Frogleap and Leopardfur attempt to steal a fish. However, Frogleap is distracted by Mosspelt's claws stuck in the Twoleg pelt, and charges into the Twoleg to prevent it from hurting her. He frees Mosspelt and helps Leopardfur carry the large salmon back to the Clan. Frogleap is displeased how dangerous the task was.
The next morning, Leopardfur goes to steal another fish with Mosspelt in order to demonstrate that she is fine with their relationship, but the Twoleg catches Mosspelt. Leopardfur returns to camp with the grave news, and Frogleap is furious that Leopardfur took Mosspelt on such a dangerous mission, dropping that she is expecting his kits. Leopardfur, Cedarpelt, and Voleclaw rescue her, and Frogleap happily reunites with his mate, though he sharply scolds Leopardfur again for putting his expecting mate in danger. Mosspelt defends Leopardfur as she saved her. After Bluestar calls for WindClan's return to their territory after they were driven out by Brokenstar, Leopardfur has her patrol hunt on WindClan's territory. Frogleap questions Leopardfur's orders, but she insists she's in charge with Crookedstar ill. They come across Wetfoot and his ShadowClan patrol who bring news of WindClan stragglers on their land. The joint patrols confront Stagleap, Sorrelshine, and Pigeonflight for catching a vole, and they chase them away. Frogleap expresses his disappointment in Leopardfur for belittling Clan warriors. The next morning, Leopardfur assigns Frogleap to repairing the camp walls with Skyheart and Loudbelly.
After Whiteclaw's death, Frogleap comforts Leopardfur and insists his death wasn't her fault. Leopardfur confesses she should've stayed with him as her mate, and Frogleap admits he misses her too, but he made his choice for a reason. He vows to always remain her friend, and Leopardfur is pleased she hasn't lost his friendship. Mosspelt later gives birth to their kits, Woodkit, Robinkit, and Dawnkit. Despite the harsh weather, Frogleap asks to hunt in the river since he enjoys the fast water and wishes for his kits to taste river prey instead of land prey. Skyheart and Loudbelly join them, and Frogleap is determined to catch a carp for his kits. He accidentally scares Leopardfur by lurking near the bottom of the river for too long to check on the current, and together they catch a trout. Despite the patrol's haul, he is still determined to catch a carp for his kits and returns to the river. He manages to catch one, but the storm sends a large branch tumbling towards the river, and it smacks into Frogleap as he resurfaces with his prey. Leopardfur attempts to catch him as the current drags him by, but the tumbles past, and the raging river drags him under.
The patrol finds his body downstream in the reedbed and bring it back to camp, and Leopardfur struggles to explain to the Clan what had happened. Cedarpelt, Lakeshine, and Mosspelt are the most devastated, and Leopardfur remarks that Frogleap would want them to face this challenge just as any RiverClan warrior would do with strength and bravery. Leopardfur helps Mosspelt break the news to their kits about their father's death, and Leopardfur fetches Frogleap's carp to give to his kits. They hold Frogleap's vigil but do not bury his body due to their burial grounds being flooded. However, the next morning, the river floods, and Robinkit and Woodkit drown. The flood also carries away Frogleap's body, and Leopardfur blames herself for not insisting they should've put his body elsewhere outside of the flood zone. Later, Frogleap gives Leopardfur a life for devotion during her leadership ceremony. Leopardfur asks if his sons are with him, and Frogleap replies they are. She apologizes for failing to save them, but Frogleap insists they are loved.

Trivia[]

Mistakes[]

  • He was mistakenly described as dark gray.[23]
  • In Crookedstar's Promise, it is said that Leopardstar's generation, including Frogleap, all decided to wait until Leopardkit reached her sixth moon before they were all apprenticed,[24] but in Leopardstar's Honor, Leopardkit was apprenticed early at five moons old.[25]

Continuity[]

The following information is from sources considered non-canon, retconned, or from adapted material.

  • Frogleap being the father of Mosspelt's kit, Dawnkit, was originally revealed on Su Susann's "Missing Kits" on Vicky's Facebook. Frogleap was Willowshine's father.[26] He was also described as a light gray tom with a dark gray striped tail and green eyes.[27]

Quotes[]

"Show me that move you talked about, the frontpaw slash."
―Frogkit to Crookedjaw after the Twolegs caught Willowbreeze Crookedstar's Promise, page 314

"It'll be our first battle!"
―Frogleap to Sedgecreek when ThunderClan threats to take Sunningrocks back Crookedstar's Promise, page 411

"I think about that every time I close my eyes...If only I'd been quicker or stronger...But we can't change what happened. And starving ourselves won't help the Clan."
―Frogleap about Sunfish's illness Leopardstar's Honor, page 103

Frogleap: "Look! It's my namesake. Should we catch it? Or let it go?"
Whitepaw: "Catch it!"
Frogleap: "Come on, then."
—Frogleap teaching Whitepaw how to hunt frogs Leopardstar's Honor, page 119

Frogleap: "Was that really the right thing to do? [...] They were WindClan warriors. The moor is their home."
Leopardfur: "Was their home. WindClan gave it up."
Frogleap: "That doesn't mean we can hunt there and they can't."
Leopardfur: "Why are you so concerned about every Clan but your own?"
Frogleap: "Because those WindClan cats are warriors, just like us! They don't deserve to starve any more than we do!"
Leopardfur: "That's their problem. Not ours."
Frogleap: "Oh, Leopardfur. You're not the warrior I hoped you'd become."
Leopardfur: "Thank StarClan I'm not."
—Leopardfur and Frogleap arguing about the WindClan cats Leopardstar's Honor, pages 237-238

"I know it feels like StarClan is testing us. We are threatened by ThunderClan and WindClan. Snow and rain have made fishing hard and left us hungry. And the river has been poisoned. But Frogleap was the first to meet any challenge. He risked fishing in fast water to find prey for his kits. He relished the challenge, and if he were here, he'd tell you to relish it too. He'd tell us a challenge is a chance to prove that a warrior is more than just claws and teeth. A warrior is heart and mind. It is not how we hunt and fight that define our success, but how we face tragedy, how we rise above it. This is how we prove we are true warriors. That is what Frogleap would have done. This is what he would expect us to do, because he knew, just as I do, that RiverClan warriors are the truest of all, and if we face more challenges than other Clans, it is because we are stronger and braver than any of them."
