"My warriors have been brave, but you have shown courage beyond your calling."
This article contains major spoilers for the recently released book, Star. Please proceed at your own discretion.
"Cats can only thrive with the help and support of others. We should accept that. We must help each other and share what we have instead of competing over land and prey. It needs to be part of our way of life. I want RiverClan to be like that. To be something new, something different, something better. That's why choosing the right leader is so important."
— Frostpaw to Nightheart about choosing the next leader in Thunder, page 290

Frostdawn is a small,[15] light gray[7] she-cat[1] with darker color points,[16] deep[17] blue eyes,[18][19] and two scars on her throat.[20][21][22]

Frostdawn is a medicine cat of RiverClan under Icestar's leadership in the lake territories. She was born under Mistystar's leadership as Frostkit to Jayclaw and Curlfeather alongside her littermates Mistkit and Graykit. Her mother's belief that Frostkit demonstrated a connection with StarClan prompted her to be trained by Mothwing as her new medicine cat apprentice following Willowshine's death. As her Clan's sole connection with their ancestors, Frostpaw had a major role to fulfill. Following Mistystar's and Reedwhisker's sudden deaths, Frostpaw believed that StarClan told her that she alone had to choose RiverClan's next leader. Shortly after receiving signs that Curlfeather should be RiverClan's leader, Curlfeather was killed by dogs while journeying to the Moonpool. Frostpaw then chose Owlnose to be leader, which fell through when Owlnose decided that he did not want to go through with receiving his nine lives.

Frostpaw's insecurities about her inability to speak to StarClan led her to doubt if she even had a connection to them at all, and she stepped down from her medicine cat duties to train as a warrior apprentice with Harelight as her new mentor. However, after experiencing a vision from Reedwhisker about his murder, Frostpaw was attacked by Splashtail in WindClan territory on her way to ask Whistlepaw for advice. Realizing that her attempted murderer believed her to be dead, she became a loner and went on a journey to the Cats of the Park with Nightheart as instructed by Riverstar to learn how to meditate and choose RiverClan's proper leader. Frostpaw learned that her mother, Curlfeather, was behind the corruption and murders in RiverClan, and that Curlfeather had lied about Frostpaw being destined to be a medicine cat. Despite the other Clans initially distrusting her, Frostpaw rallied the other Clans to fight against Splashtail and his schemes, eventually resulting in his death by her claws. She earned her full name of Frostdawn, choosing Icewing to be RiverClan's new leader.

Has Frostdawn been spayed? toggle section
In "Thunder", Frostpaw was taken in by Smoky's Twolegs to care for her severe injury. As a result, it is heavily implied that Frostpaw underwent a sterilization procedure after noticing a wound on her flank that hadn't been there before. Smoky explains that it shouldn't cause any issues as lots of she-cats that the Twoleg healer treats come back with that same wound.

The Broken Code

Frostkit is born to Jayclaw and Curlfeather alongside her littermates, Mistkit and Graykit.

A Starless Clan

"To begin with, I was manipulated by my mother. No cat is manipulating me now."
―Frostpaw arguing with Podlight Wind, page 104
Frostpaw is chosen to be Mothwing's new medicine cat apprentice following Willowshine's death. Her mother Curlfeather has insisted on her daughter's connection to StarClan ever since she dreamed of her father's death. Shortly after her apprenticeship, Mistystar abruptly dies and Reedwhisker goes missing. In their absence, RiverClan was thrown in a leadership crisis. Frostpaw interprets a dock leaf in the shape of a star in her nest as a sign she and Mothwing should temporarily lead. After Reedwhisker's body is found in a ravine, Frostpaw interprets a small curled white feather near the Moonpool as a sign that Curlfeather should be leader. However, her mother is killed by dogs on the way to the Moonpool, and she warns her daughter to not trust anyone. Frostpaw's attempts to contact StarClan are fuzzy, and she appoints Owlnose as RiverClan's newest leader. However, Owlnose flounders under the pressure, and he steps down before receiving his nine lives. Frostpaw realizes that her dreams with StarClan were conjured from her imagination, prompting her decision to train as a warrior under Harelight when Tigerstar of ShadowClan takes over RiverClan until they can find a proper leader.
Frostpaw enjoyed her warrior training and aspired to one day become mates with Splashtail. However, she experienced a vision of Reedwhisker's murder and, upon Splashtail's encouragement, she decided to visit Whistlepaw from WindClan for advice. Frostpaw was brutally attacked on her journey to the moor, though Whistlepaw brought her to Smoky at the horseplace for treatment. After the Twolegs treated her, Frostpaw was instructed by Riverstar to travel to the Cats of the Park to learn how to save RiverClan and choose its next leader. Nightheart of ThunderClan accompanied her, and Frostpaw learned how to meditate and found her own peace after moons of turmoil. However, Frostpaw realized that it was Splashtail who attempted to kill her and he was plotting with Curlfeather to take over RiverClan's leadership. She, Nightheart, Waffle, and Wasp returned a moon later. Frostpaw challenged Splashtail for killing her mother and attacking her, though the other Clan leaders agree with Splashtail's leadership. Splashtail turns Frostpaw away for attempting to disrupt the Clan, and Tigerstar of ShadowClan welcomes her instead. After witnessing Harelight's death, Frostpaw, Nightheart, and Sunbeam help Mothwing, Duskfur, and Icewing escape to ShadowClan, with Icewing quickly leaving on a mission from StarClan. Frostpaw secures allies in the other Clans when Splashtail attacks ShadowClan. While rescuing Floatkit, Frostpaw kills Splashtail though suffers severe wounds in the process. She wanders as a ghost for a half-moon until her Clanmates beckon her back. Mothwing names her Frostdawn, and Frostdawn chooses Icewing to be RiverClan's new leader.

Trivia

Interesting facts

Author statements

  • When asked to describe Frostdawn, Kate Cary describes her soul as "the colour of a chilly leaf-bare dawn."[blog 3]
  • Kate has stated that Frostdawn is her favorite protagonist in A Starless Clan,[blog 4] and has since replaced Graystripe as her all time favorite character.[37]
    • Furthermore, she has expressed that he and Frostdawn are a joy to write.[38]

Mistakes

  • In the hardbound printed edition of River, Frostdawn was described with white-and-brown fur,[34] but this appears to have been fixed in the digital edition.[39]
  • There is a discrepancy on Frostdawn's eye color. The allegiances of Thunder,[18] the cover of Wind,[40] the cover of Star,[41] and the Warrior Cats website depict Frostdawn as having blue eyes,[42] though she is depicted with green eyes on the cover of Shadow,[43] and an undecipherable color on the cover of River.[44]
  • When Frostpaw recalls Cloudstar was a leader, she mentions that she has never met a leader she had only heard about,[45] but in River she meets Leopardstar, who she remembers being only told stories about, making Leopardstar a leader she has only heard of.[46] Furthermore, she does not recognize Leopardstar in Star.[47][48]
  • She is mistakenly called a RiverClan warrior.[49] This error is fixed in the paperback edition, with Frostpaw calling herself a RiverClan cat instead.[50]
  • Despite appearing in the book, Frostdawn is excluded from the allegiances of Wind.[51] She is also excluded from the allegiances of Ivypool's Heart and Star, despite being a ShadowClan refugee.[52][10][53][54]

Quotes

«Frostpaw felt a wave of relief. In the crowd, she spotted her littermate, Mistpaw, watching her with sympathetic eyes. Graypaw stood close by. For a moment, Frostpaw wishes she could leave Mothwing's side and go cuddle with her littermates, like they had when they were small, before Curlfeather realized she was having visions. Sometimes she wishes she could join them in the warriors' den—both to be close to them, and for the chance to watch discussions like these with no responsibility for solving the problems. Sometimes being a medicine cat apprentice was very lonely.»
—Frostpaw's thoughts about her littermates River, page 123

Splashtail: "Are you sure you want to do this without the other medicine cats?"
Frostpaw: "No. I have to. I have to do this for our Clan."
Splashtail: "You're right, but it's tough."
Frostpaw: "Well, until we work on how we can choose a new leader, we can't let any cat in the other Clans know what's going on. It's up to me to speak with StarClan and find out who our new leader should be. Only…what if I can't do it? What if StarClan does send me a message, but I get it wrong? I'm only an apprentice, and what I say could affect the Clan for seasons."
Splashtail: "You should have faith in yourself. You're a bright, talented medicine-cat apprentice, and StarClan wouldn't guide you wrong."
—Splashtail and Frostpaw River, pages 212-213

Mothwing: "When Willowshine died, I thought my grief would never ease but, at some point, it does. It has to be. Life needs to get back to normal."
Frostpaw: "Do you call this normal? A Clan without a leader or a deputy? Whose next leader was killed before she could get the blessing of StarClan? There's no normal. Not anymore. There's nothing to get back to. Why even try?"
Mothwing: "Because our Clanmates are relying on us. Because no matter how bad you feel, they need you, and they'll keep needing you. And if you let them down, then everything you've worked for until now—everything Curlfeather worked for—will be wasted."
—Mothwing and Frostpaw Sky, pages 38-39

«His eyes shone with such warmth that her heart lifted. A rush of affection for Splashtail took her by surprise. She stiffened. Had her feelings for Splashtail gone beyond friendship? She pushed that thought away. Medicine cats can't have mates, she reminded herself. But, for the first time since she'd become a medicine-cat apprentice, the thought tugged at her heart.»
—Frostpaw about her feelings for Splashtail Sky, page 248

Frostpaw: "I can't do it! I can't speak to StarClan! I can't see anything except my own thoughts. I can't feel anything except my body. I thought I had a connection with them. Really, I did. But I was wrong, and now I can see that. My visions always felt wrong, and the more I hear other medicine cats talk about StarClan, the more I see I haven't spoken to them at all!"
Mothwing: "Take a breath. You're still just an apprentice. You need to give it time."
Frostpaw: "But we don't have time! RiverClan is depending on me, and Fidgetflake is about to tell every cat about Owlnose. What if—"
Mothwing: "Look at me. You mustn't tell any cat about this. We'll figure something out. But for now, no cat should know that you can't reach StarClan. It's happened to medicine cats before. It doesn't mean you don't have a connection to them, only that you can't reach them right now. I'm sorry I can't help you with this. I'm your mentor. I should be able to teach you. But you have to master this skill alone. That means it'll be harder for you than for an ordinary medicine-cat apprentice. But you're smart, and you're quick, and your heart is in the right place. You can do this. I know you can. You just need to keep trying."
—Mothwing and Frostpaw at the Moonpool Sky, pages 306-307

«I'm going to be a warrior! I'm free!»
—Frostpaw's thoughts after she reveals her secret Shadow, page 60

«A warm glow filled Frostpaw's body from ears to tail-tip as she and her littermates headed back toward the RiverClan camp with their mentors. The sun was shining and there was a frosty tang in the air. This was going to be a really good day. Winning praise from Harelight and the others was one of the best things she had ever felt; their words filled her with pride at how well she was learning to be a warrior. She had struggled with doubts before she could imagine this life for herself, but she was enjoying every moment of her training. It was hard to believe she ever thought she was meant to be a medicine cat.»
—Frostpaw's thoughts about training to be a warrior Shadow, page 151

Frostpaw: "This is why I couldn't see her in StarClan. She's not in StarClan, is she?"
Riverstar: "She's in the Dark Forest. She knew the consequences of her actions. It was a price she was willing to pay."
Frostpaw: "Even if it meant never seeing me again? Did she ever care for me at all?"
Riverstar: "I'm sorry you have to suffer like this, little one. Just remember that her last act in life was to save you."
—Frostpaw learning the truth about her mother Thunder, page 296

"Frostpaw is a strong young cat. She's had to be, because of everything that she's already gone through in her young life. Troubles that would have destroyed a weaker cat."
―Jayfeather about Frostpaw Wind, page 118
