"I can't make all dead cats appear. Needletail told me about StarClan. I've never seen a StarClan cat. I think I can only sense cats who are still tied to the living. They've stuck close to us. They can't move on until they've done what they feel they need to do. Like Needletail. She will only find her way to StarClan when she has finished what she started here."
Tree on the ghost cats in Darkest Night, page 298

The ghost residence serves as a place for spirit cats in neither StarClan nor the Dark Forest, acting as a purgatory of sorts. With the known cases seen in the books, cats are unable to move on into StarClan until they accomplish a certain task.[1]

Description[]

General[]

While this residence does not seem to have a set place, it appears as a realm where only ghosts can coexist and are stuck. Cats related to the Sisters, like Tree, are able to see the spirits on their own will.[2] Members of the Sisters go here when they die, where they follow and guide their descendants similar to that of StarClan.[3]

Relation to living cats[]

Cats stuck in this residence are unlike those seen in StarClan or even the Place of No Stars. Instead, cats will appear as ghosts to alive cats, as seen with both Violetshine and Crowfeather, who saw Needletail and Ashfoot respectively in the living world.[4][5] The most these ghosts can do is merely appear to the living. According to Tree, they are tied to the living world due to something they feel they should accomplish, and will only find their way to StarClan when it is completed.[6]
Members and descendants of the Sisters are able to see cats in the unnamed residence for currently unknown reasons, though Moonlight explains that the ability is hereditary and passes from mother to kit.[7] However, Rootpaw inherited his ability from Tree, his father, meaning that the ability is generally passed from parent to kit, over just the mother.[8]
According to Needletail, she appears in the residence when Tree is present.[9] This brings into question why Ashfoot was able to do so years prior to Tree's introduction to the Clans.[5]

History[]

In the A Vision of Shadows arc[]

Darkest Night[]

Tree speaks to Needletail, who asks for his help to make things right after the defeat of the Kin. Tree then notices that she is dead, and a ghost, due to the glow on her body. After, Violetpaw dreams of her. She believes that Needletail's death is her fault. More of these dreams happen, and each time Violetpaw comes close to Needletail, the ghost runs away. Meanwhile, Alderheart receives a prophecy to search for a six-toed cat. When Violetpaw returns from her expedition to rescue SkyClan cats, she dreams of Needletail once more. Needletail introduces a yellow cat named Tree. She expains to Violetpaw that she is neither in StarClan nor the Dark Forest, and all she sees when she opens her eyes is Tree. Needletail thinks that she is bonded to Tree because she holds the key to helping the Clans as a ghost.
Tree returns to SkyClan, and is almost turned away when it is realized that he is the six-toed cat. Tree then is discovered to be the connection between the Clans and Needletail. He is able to summon her, along with the ghosts of Darktail's victims, to be seen and heard by the Clans. It is discovered that Tree has the power to summon ghosts to relay their messages to the living. The ghost cats rise from the lake and tell Rowanstar that he must fight for ShadowClan for it to be saved. The leader admits he cannot do that, and the spirits disappear.

Lost Stars[]

Bramblestar's spirit is spotted by Rootpaw. At first, Rootpaw believes he had disturbed Bramblestar by not paying attention; in reality, it only confirms to Bramblestar that someone can finally see him. He attempts to talk to Rootpaw, calling out for help, but the apprentice is startled and tries to run away from him.

The Silent Thaw[]

Bramblestar watches his own body beside a grieving Alderheart as a ghost, having just lost a life to cold and sickness. He waits for StarClan to appear to him and to welcome him back to his body, feeling uncertain, seeing as he has never lost a life before and is not sure what happens next. After waiting, Jayfeather declares Bramblestar as dead, who desperately tries to communicate with Clanmates to let them know he is right there—nobody can see or hear him. He is swept away by a snowstorm, and witnesses his own vigil back at camp. Bramblestar does not understand why this is happening, and runs away, deciding he has to fix this somehow.
Back in present day, Rootpaw is in disbelief over how much Bramblestar resembles a ghost, considering the ThunderClan leader is alive and has only lost one life to a fever. He braces himself and returns to where he has initially spotted Bramblestar, but the clearing seems empty. Rootpaw thinks he imagined it all.

Veil of Shadows[]

Spiresight is in a clearing, while receiving a feeling pulling him towards something. He lets the feeling pull him toward something, and he spots a big tom rolling in catmint. He sees the tom stop, and drop into a hunting crouch. Spiresight hears a shriek, and then sees the tom throw Shadowsight's body against a tree, before throwing the medicine cat's body into a ravine. In the rebels' camp, Rootspring spots Stemleaf staring at Spotfur, with grief in his eyes, as Spotfur suggests crazy ideas, clearly showing her grief.

Darkness Within[]

As Tree and Rootspring are coming back from the vigil, they spot a ghost named Cheddar. Cheddar notes to them that most cats do not see her, but it is strange that they can. Tree asks if Cheddar had seen any other spirit-cats. She replies that it is just her most of the time. Cheddar explains that she had seen some cats lately, but they fade in and out, like they cannot decide whether they want to stay or not. Rootspring pressed on, asking Cheddar what they looked like. The ghost explains that some were gray, and some were tabby. Cheddar goes on to say that she had seen a brown tom with ginger legs, making Rootspring recognize Sandynose's description. After learning about StarClan, Cheddar states that it must be scary, because the ghosts have scared expressions on their faces. Tree reassures that Cheddar will not fade away, and they part ways.
While discussing what actions they should take after Rootspring reports their encounter with Cheddar to the other leaders, Tree suggests going to the Sisters for advice. He explains that the Sisters' expertise lies in communicating with ghosts, so therefore, they would have the most experience to help the Clans. The leaders approve, and send four cats to find the Sisters.
At the Sisters' camp, Moonlight appears as a spirit. She goes to Rootspring, and asks him if he is the son of Tree. Rootspring nods, so Moonlight tells him that she is the mother of Tree. She turns to the Sisters, telling them to go help the Clans. The Sisters speak against this, but Moonlight asks them if they are not curious and worried that it might happen to their dead and ancestors. The Sisters look at their paws, before agreeing. Moonlight glances at Spotfur, beginning a ceremony to worship her kits.
