"I've had a good life. I've had great friends and loyal Clanmates. I've loved and been loved. And I've had kits that I'm proud of. A warrior can't ask for more than that. I'm just grateful I had one last chance to protect the Clans." |
— Graystripe accepting his death in A Light in the Mist, page 307 |
Graystripe is a dark gray tom[35] with yellow eyes,[36] and a stripe of darker gray fur running down his back.[37]
Graystripe was a ThunderClan elder under Bramblestar's, the impostor's, and Squirrelflight's leaderships in the lake territories, and previously served as a warrior under Bluestar, Crookedstar, Leopardstar, Firestar, and Bramblestar in the forest territories. He was born to Willowpelt as Graykit and was apprenticed as Graypaw to Lionheart, quickly befriending Firepaw, a former kittypet, the two forming a lifelong friendship. After becoming a warrior, Graystripe mentored Brackenfur. While out in the forest, he was rescued by Silverstream, a RiverClan warrior, after falling through the icy river. The two often met in secret afterwards, and eventually started a relationship. Silverstream had his two kits, Featherkit and Stormkit, but died from blood loss while kitting, which devastated Graystripe. He decided to join RiverClan to be with his kits, but defected back to ThunderClan following his exile. During the midst of the battle against BloodClan, Graystripe was made deputy, and after Firestar went on a quest, Graystripe briefly led ThunderClan alongside Cinderpelt, where he made a vow to Gremlin and helped fend off another battle with BloodClan.
When trying to rescue cats from Twolegs, Graystripe was taken captive and briefly became a kittypet. He befriended another kittypet, Millie, and the two left to find Graystripe's home. The two became mates before reuniting with the Clans after moons of traveling, where he happily settled down back to his position as a warrior, and Millie gave birth to Bumblekit, Blossomkit, and Briarkit. He served his Clan until he retired to the elders' den with Sandstorm; however, Graystripe was exiled for speaking out against the impostor, but returned under Squirrelflight's acting leadership. Later, Graystripe made his own journey to the old forest, where he helped Gremlin's son, Fang, after making a promise to her in the past, and briefly reunited with Stormfur and Barley. After the destruction of the Moonstone and teaching WarriorClan the ways of Clan life, Graystripe realized that the Clans could live without StarClan, and he also came to realization of his own place within the Clan, venturing back to ThunderClan. Upon returning to his Clan, he took up the acting leadership after Lionblaze abdicated, though Graystripe still kept him as deputy.
Following the return of Bramblestar and Squirrelflight, Graystripe volunteered to enter the Dark Forest to help defeat Ashfur, believing himself to still have an important role to play. There, Graystripe reunited with Firestar and his family, and was able to condemn Ashfur for all he had done, but at the cost of Ashfur managing to mortally wound Graystripe. The old gray tom embraced his death and peacefully died among friends after returning to the living world, and ascended to StarClan, able to see all the cats he missed so much once more.

The Prophecies Begin
- "This is something you have to work out by yourself. It's not my place to judge you. Graystripe, whatever you decide to do, I will always be your friend."
- ―Fireheart to Graystripe Fire and Ice, page 320
- Graypaw is a young ThunderClan apprentice being mentored by Lionheart, who encounters a kittypet named Rusty. When Rusty is accepted into ThunderClan as Firepaw, he, Graypaw, and Ravenpaw form a tight-knit group. After Ravenpaw reveals to his friends that Tigerclaw murdered Redtail, Graypaw and Firepaw have him escape to live with the loner, Barley. Graypaw and Firepaw assist in the battle against ShadowClan to help retrieve Frostfur's kits, and afterwards, with the courage they showed in battle, they become warriors, now known as Graystripe and Fireheart. Bluestar then sends them on a mission to retrieve the banished WindClan.
- He receives his first apprentice, Brackenpaw, and later while going to the Sunningrocks, he falls in the river, being rescued by Silverstream, a RiverClan she-cat. The two pursue a relationship with one another. Graystripe then begins to neglect Brackenpaw's training due to meeting Silverstream, often missing training sessions. During a raid by Brokenstar's rogues, Graystripe attacks and kills Clawface, who almost killed Fireheart, defending his friend. Graystripe and Fireheart feed the starving RiverClan behind Bluestar's back when their fish are poisoned.
- Silverstream then tells him she's expecting his kits; however, she dies from blood loss while kitting at Sunningrocks, devastating Graystripe. He names his two kits, Stormkit and Featherkit, and brings them to ThunderClan. To avoid battle, Graystripe yields them to RiverClan under Crookedstar's command and decides to stay with them in RiverClan. His loyalty to ThunderClan never leaves and tries to remain loyal to RiverClan, where he tells Fireheart of Leopardstar's planned attack at Sunningrocks against ThunderClan. After being exposed and not bringing himself to attack Fireheart, Leopardstar banishes him, forcing him to return to ThunderClan.
- Firestar becomes leader and wishes to appoint Graystripe as his deputy, but decides against it as due to Graystripe's disloyalty, appointing Whitestorm instead. He proves his loyalty to ThunderClan after he saw Darkstripe feed Sorrelkit deathberries, attacking his half-brother. During the battle with BloodClan. Whitestorm is killed by Bone, and chooses Graystripe to succeed him.
The New Prophecy
- "You must do whatever you think is best. But I know one thing. Nothing meant more to Graystripe than your friendship and his Clan. Even when he was in RiverClan he longed to go home. He would want to see ThunderClan as strong as it could possibly be even if that meant accepting he's not coming back.""
- ―Stormfur to Firestar about Graystripe Sunset, pages 250-251
- Graystripe leads an attack on the construction Twolegs alongside Squirrelpaw to free the trapped cats, including Squirrelpaw's sister, Leafpaw, other Clan cats, and two non-Clan cats, Sasha and Cody. He manages to help open several cages before being snatched up by the Twolegs and being taken away. After being told of his capture, Firestar grieves heavily for the loss of his friend, refusing to believe he is dead. Firestar does not appoint a new deputy for many moons; much to the dismay of his Clanmates and the other Clans, though eventually a sign by StarClan is sent to Leafpool, and a vigil is held for Graystripe. Brambleclaw is chosen to succeed his position, despite not yet receiving an apprentice.
Power of Three
- Graystripe: "So you didn't wait for me."
- Firestar: "I couldn't."
- The Sight, page 144
- Graystripe finds his way to the Clans in their new territories, along with his new mate, Millie. They reach the Clans during a Gathering, being reunited with Firestar. Because of this, Firestar is conflicted about whether Graystripe should return as deputy, but StarClan ultimately approves of Brambleclaw remaining deputy, and Graystripe is happy to stay as warrior. He becomes temporary deputy when Brambleclaw travels to the mountains. Later, Millie gives birth to their kits, Bumblekit, Briarkit, and Blossomkit, where Graystripe is able to be a proper father to his second litter of kits. He becomes temporary deputy again when Brambleclaw leads a patrol to search for Sol, who was suspected of murdering Ashfur.
Omen of the Stars
- "I would have taken your place, if you had let me."
- ―Graystripe mourning Firestar The Last Hope, page 324
A Vision of Shadows
- «Graystripe sighed dramatically and began lumbering around the clearing, lurching with each step so that the kits squealed with fear as he swung them this way, then that.»
- —Graystripe giving a badger ride to Blossomfall's kits Darkest Night, page 324
The Broken Code
- "A good warrior doesn't follow their leader off a cliff. A good leader doesn't expect blind loyalty. Firestar certainly never led like that. And neither did you, Bramblestar—not before you lost a life. Only a weak leader demands obedience at any cost. [ …] Bramblestar would never have hurt his own warrior. I don't know who you are...but you're not our leader!"
- ―Graystripe to Bramblestar's impostor Veil of Shadows, page 228
- Graystripe remains ThunderClan's acting leader until the return of Bramblestar and Squirrelflight, and then willingly volunteers to enter the Dark Forest to help stop Ashfur. There, Graystripe is reunited with his deceased family and is able to see Firestar once more. During the final battle against Ashfur, Graystripe condemns Ashfur for all he had done and passes on a message from Squirrelflight to give to the gray-flecked tom. Ashfur, enraged, attacks the old gray tom and manages to mortally wound him. Graystripe is able to continue on for the battle, but then, after returning to the living world, passes from his wounds while surrounded by his Clanmates and ascends to StarClan. Bramblestar then honors the cats who entered the Dark Forest—Graystripe included—as Lights in the Mist.
Super Editions

- "Cats of ThunderClan, I'm so glad that I came back to find ThunderClan. I could never have made the journey without Millie, and I was so blessed by StarClan to have a second chance to raise kits. I have lost so many cats who were precious to me, and not a day goes by when I don't think of Silverstream, Feathertail, and Stormfur. But I have no quarrel with StarClan for the path they chose for me, and I'm proud of all my kits. Blossomfall for her courage and skill in battle; Bumblestripe for his loyalty and compassion; and Briarlight for her bravery, her humbling spirit, and her hopefulness. I shall be watching all of you from the elders' den; you can be sure of that."
- ―Graystripe before his elder ceremony Bramblestar's Storm, page 452
- "No. No, it hurts terribly. I miss my kin. I miss my friends. But I know that if [StarClan] don't come back, life hasn't ended. ThunderClan might struggle to keep itself together after the strife we've been through. But it can still be a Clan. We're still cats working together, taking care of one another."
- ―Graystripe to Stormfur Graystripe's Vow, pages 424-425
- He meets WarriorClan, a group of kittypets that act as warriors, their leader being Monkeystar. He also meets Fang, a cat's son that he made a vow to in the past, and Fang asks if that promise extended to Gremlin's kits. Following the Moonstone's destruction, Graystripe reunites with Barley, and along with WarriorClan, helps Fang free kittypets trapped in a Twoleg den. He makes Fang the deputy of WarriorClan, and Petunia the medicine cat, before leaving to go back to ThunderClan, after realizing that the Clans can live without StarClan and his own place within the Clan.
- In the past, Graystripe struggles to lead ThunderClan following Firestar's absence to rebuild SkyClan. When BloodClan and their leader, Fury, decide to take revenge on the Clans, Graystripe finds himself questioning his status as the temporary leader of the Clan, which furthers when the Clan begin to disagree with Graystripe's choices. Graystripe finds an ally in Gremlin, a heavily pregnant BloodClan queen, and she informs him of BloodClan's plan for revenge if he can give her and her brother, Scraps, sanctuary in ThunderClan. Graystripe leads ThunderClan in the battle with BloodClan and convinces Fury to surrender after offering her help for a critical wound. Firestar and Sandstorm return from their journey, and Graystripe admits that he is satisfied as Firestar's deputy, but doesn't believe he is able to be a proper leader.
Graystripe's Adventure
- Graystripe: "I've been trying to figure out how to say this...or when to say this...for days now. Millie, I...I know I've been hard to deal with. And I know this life can be hard. But I couldn't have made it here without you. You saved my life, but...more than that...you saved my soul. You found me when I was lost, and you brought me back to who I really was. I've already said I want you to join ThunderClan with me, but I need you to know how I feel. [ …] And I hope you'll feel the same way, Millie...I want you to stand by my side as my mate."
- Millie: "Graystripe...to be with you..that's what I've wanted since I first laid eyes on you."
- Warrior's Return, pages 258-259
- Following his capture, Graystripe is now a kittypet living with Twolegs, and befriends a fellow kittypet named Millie, teaching her about Clan life and how to fight and hunt. Silverstream appears in his dreams and encourages him to find ThunderClan, where he offers Millie to join him, but she refuses. He leaves without her, determined to find Firestar, but grows weak with hunger and thirst, and after many days, Millie finds him and rescues him from starvation.
- During their journey, Millie becomes injured when the two are chased by a monster in a cornfield, and they rest with some loners in their barn. The Twoleg and cats there have an uneasy relationship, but Graystripe helps to bridge their bond by saving one of the Twoleg kits from drowning. He and Millie continue on their journey, and they find Graystripe's old home destroyed by Twolegs. Disheartened, the pair finds Ravenpaw and Barley, who inform them the Clans had left moons ago.
- Graystripe becomes frustrated with Millie's inability to forget her old kittypet tendencies and is hit by a monster while scolding her. He recovers at Diesel's place and becomes jealous of Millie's friendliness with Diesel, realizing he has developed feelings for Millie. Graystripe and Millie journey to the sun-drown-place and head to the lake territories. After seeing cats on an island, Graystripe and Millie are reunited with the Clans.
