"Glancing aside, Graystripe saw only the empty space where his mate Millie should have been sitting. But Millie was dead, and for moons Graystripe had been suffering the quiet heartbreak of her loss. Now Stemleaf, the son of his daughter Blossomfall, had been killed too." |

Chapter description[]
- Graystripe sits in a sunny spot, watching his Clanmates move across the camp. He feels sadness, and tension crackles in the camp. He thinks how so many warriors had been lost in the battle against the impostor. His Clanmates all seem lost, as though they didn't know what to do, and Graystripe notices Alderheart forgetting what he was doing. Graystripe grieves the loss of his mate, Millie and grandson, Stemleaf. Graystripe sorrowfully thinks how suddenly Stemleaf had died, compared to the half-moon with Millie where he had the knowledge his mate was dying.
- In leaf-bare, when StarClan had stopped communicating with them, the cause was thought to be the frozen Moonpool. Then, a ShadowClan medicine cat apprentice had been receiving unusual visions, which led to the event where a new cat had possessed Bramblestar's body. At first, ThunderClan had thought Bramblestar was fine, their leader became strange and crueler; exiling the cats whom were named as Codebreakers, and punishing cats who in his eyes, deserved it. ThunderClan had eventually found out about the impostor. Graystripe is proud of Stemleaf, and wishes he was still alive. Graystripe feels guilty that he hadn't stood up against the fake Bramblestar, joined the rebels after his exile, and fought in the battle which ended with many casualties. He reflects on how he was an elder now, and looks around for his kin. Bumblestripe was discussing the warrior code with Shellfur, and Lionblaze brings a piece of prey for Spotfur. His golden pelt reminds Graystripe of Sandstorm.
- Spotfur also reminds him of Frostfur, who had decided to stay in the forest territories. That also brings up memories of Ravenpaw. Graystripe grieves over Ravenpaw's death, and hopes his friend goes to StarClan. Which brought up the current problem in the Clans; The impostor was now a prisoner in ShadowClan, and Squirrelflight was the current acting ThunderClan leader.
- Squirrelflight announces that she wanted another patrol to go out hunting, but the younger warriors don't move, although they were clearly being addressed by Squirrelflight. Graystripe notices Thornclaw wasn't reminding the younger warriors of how they should be loyal to their leader, who were now lazing around. Squirrelflight narrows her eyes, and grows taut as though she was restraining herself from leaping at them. Finally, the younger warriors go hunting, Squirrelflight glaring after them. Graystripe questions why Thornclaw wasn't defending his Clan leader, when approached. Thornclaw replies she wasn't their rightful leader, since she had been exiled. Graystripe fiercely defends Squirrelflight, saying she's proven herself, and tells the senior warrior to not forget that there've been times like this before. Thornclaw turns away, lashing his tail.
- Squirrelflight asks for a word with Graystripe, and he follows her to her den. Squirrelflight asks for his advice, knowing he was once deputy. Graystripe tells the temporary leader that he wished he could help, but says he can't, due to the impostor's impact, especially to the younger warriors who didn't know the old ThunderClan. Squirrelflight sighs that the old ThunderClan seemed better, and Graystripe confesses that he didn't like the job of being leader, even if it was temporary, but he had continued his deputy position due to a promise to Firestar. Squirrelflight asks if she could count on his help, saying she could use some advice, since the Clan was also different now. Graystripe declares she could, and promises he would help her lead the Clan until they were able to communicate with StarClan. Squirrelflight is grateful, and Graystripe pads out of the den, going inside the elders' den. Graystripe hopes he was telling Squirrelflight the truth as he falls asleep.
