Chapter description[]

Graystripe is crouching at the edge of Smudge's garden, noting the Twoleg scents all around, and feels uncomfortable, trying to fight the urge to run back to the safety of the forest. Graystripe starts to worry that BloodClan cats are lurking, but continues to look for Smudge, though the kittypet is nowhere to be found, assuming that Smudge would stay with his Twolegs until the BloodClan situation blew over. But Graystripe continues to wait for Gremlin, as the BloodClan queen had agreed to meet him at that spot to hear his decision, but starts to worry more if it was a trap. The troubled tom reminisces about his leadership qualities until he jumps at the sound of a loud bang inside a Twoleg den, figuring that it was just some Twoleg kits messing around.
Gremlin suddenly pushes her way through the bushes behind Graystripe, as he notes that she looked even closer to kitting than before. She then asks if he had made his decision yet. Graystripe tells her yes, but explains that since Firestar was away he couldn't promise a permanent place for her and Scraps in ThunderClan just yet, but in the meantime, Cinderpelt would be able to help her with her kitting. Gremlin replies that she hopes that her and her brother could earn a place in the Clan, or else they would get rejected from both ThunderClan and BloodClan, which would make Fury even more angry. Graystripe apologizes, adding that he isn't able to speak with Firestar at the moment, but hopes in his mind that the flame-colored leader would accept the two BloodClan cats' help. Gremlin pauses for a moment while Graystripe worries that she would reject his offer. Then she agrees, stating that it sounds fair, and that she and Scraps will do whatever it takes to help the ThunderClan cats. Graystripe changes the subject, asking what information she can give about BloodClan's attack. He silently hopes that Gremlin would give them information they can use to evade the attack, so Gremlin reports that they attack in two sunrises after all ThunderClan's patrols have left so they can easily pick off the warriors. Graystripe tries to work out how he would send his patrols out to manage the attack, but Gremlin says that BloodClan would suspect some cat betrayed them.
His head spins as he attempts to strategize his moves before BloodClan attacks, but Gremlin tells him that he has to trust her. As Graystripe looks at her, he realizes that his choices may affect his Clan seasons later. The BloodClan tortoiseshell digs her claws into the ground anxiously until Graystripe declares that he puts his trust in her, and ThunderClan will be ready to face the attack in two sunrises. Before he leaves, Gremlin tells him about other individuals of BloodClan and their weaknesses, while Graystripe hopes that his plan would work.
