"You can never go back, however much you might want to. [...] The last of the Clans have gone from this place. WarriorClan keeps our memory alive, but even what they know of the Clans is far from the real story." |

Chapter description[]
- Fang wakes up as warm sunlight fills the barn. He glares at Graystripe for not waking him up, but the elder settles him down by explaining that he needed his rest before they travel. Fang goes to argue, but abruptly stops after shrugging, and gives his thanks to the ThunderClan tom for the prey that had been hunted earlier in the morning. Barley offers some of his food, brought by the Twolegs that the WarriorClan members rave about. Fang tries some hesitantly but soon buries his nose in it. Whilst he eats, Barley and Graystripe talk, thankful for a chance to catch up and offer advice. Before much more can be said, Fang rejoins them, thankful for the food. The old barn cat dips his head and references the younger tom's mother.
- Graystripe states that it is time for him and Fang to leave. He tells Barley that, if he can, he will visit on the way back to the Clan territories. Barley makes reference to StarClan, causing the elder to wonder if they and Firestar are watching over him and his decisions. As he bids his farewell, Monkeystar and Clawwhistle try and come with the two toms, but Graystripe manages to convince them to remain with Barley. The cats all say their final farewells and Graystripe and Fang leave for RiverClan's old forest territory.
- The two toms traverse through what is left of the old forest territories. Graystripe feels a strong sense of nostalgia, brought on by the fact of how much his old home had changed into Twoleg nests. This sense of nostalgia mixes more with sadness at how much change had happened as the two go further into the territories. Graystripe recalls past interactions he has had in the territories, but reminds himself that he cannot go back to those times. Caught up in his memories, the elder falls behind his companion but quickly catches up as they near their destination. The overwhelming foul stench alerts the two toms that they are there. Graystripe comes to an understanding of what he had offered to help with as he struggles with the overpowering stench.
- Fang leads the way, and the stench gets worse as they close inwards. Graystripe takes notice of the Twoleg nest's state of disrepair, and he can see many cats inside through the windows. The elder asks how many cats there are, and Fang replies up to fifteen, but he is not entirely sure. The two continue to inspect the area and Fang explains how difficult it is to get in and out of the place. A few places the rogue had explained as ways of getting access are closed off. Graystripe suggests that, if he gets in, he might be able to open a door and lead the cats to safety, which Fang questions. They continue looking and soon find a window that they can use to get in.
- Graystripe states that he will go in, and Fang stays outside. The younger tom immediately interjects, but Graystripe explains that they can convince cats to get to safety with a familiar face. With some difficulty due to his age, Graystripe manages to get through the gap and enters the nest. He realizes that he cannot expect other cats to leave that way, especially if they are sick, injured, or pregnant. He hears the shuffling of the Twoleg within the den and hides. When she leaves, he explores more and finds Fang's mate, Daffodil, who looks sick. He leaves her for the moment to find the broken door. The elder tries to remove the wood blocking the exit but is unable. As he does that, the Twoleg shuts the window he had come through, leaving him trapped in the Twoleg nest.
