Chapter description

Graystripe wakes up to the sunlight filtering through the gaps of the hawthorn bush, observing that the cats surrounding him are still sleeping. He wonders how well the cats who escaped from the Twoleg nest, along with the members of WarriorClan, will survive in the wild. Graystripe feels sympathy for Fang and comforts him over having to leave his mate, Daffodil, behind. He tells the younger tom that life is full of heartbreaks, but that it's important to not let them follow you to move on.

As the cats wake up, they wait for Graystripe to speak to them. He addresses that life out in the wild will be tough, so the group should decide what they want in life. While a few choose to become a kittypets, the majority of the Twoleg nest escapees choose to join WarriorClan under the leadership of Monkeystar and new deputy, Fang. The new recruits excitedly discuss their future adventures with ther group, while Graystripe watches the queen and her kits that had decided to stay with them. The ThunderClan tom informs Fang that he is heading back to his Clan, beside the lake, much to his dismay. Graystripe assures Fang that he will lead WarriorClan well, even if Monkeystar holds the title in name.

Fang questions how WarriorClan can be a Clan without StarClan's guidance, prompting Graystripe to think about the current Clans' lack of connection with their ancestors. He responds that he genuinely doesn't know if StarClan will ever reach out to them, but Clanmates' care for one another and work towards common goals will bind them together. Graystripe affirms his faith in Fang as their new leader, which he graciously accepts. The ThunderClan tom then teaches Petunia about a few basic herbs, leaving her as WarriorClan's medicine cat.

Graystripe watches Monkeystar teaching several newcomers the hunters' crouch, reflecting on how long it seems since he met them all. He feels at peace with his wish to return to his own Clan, despite having been unsure at the beginning of his wander. Monkeystar approaches with Fang and thanks Graystripe for finding them a medicine cat in Petunia, and the older tom bids his farewell to the group. On his way out of the forest territories, he overhears WarriorClan cats talking about him while on a border patrol. Though the ThunderClan tom feels their praise is unwarranted, after thinking he hears Firestar's voice, starts to reflect that he has done many good things on his travels. Graystripe decides to spend the night with Barley before heading back to the mountains.
