Chapter description[]
- Thornclaw suggests hunting, but Flywhisker questions him, saying that she thought they were supposed to be leaving ThunderClan. The senior warrior tells the patrol to think about what leaving means, and that they know that they can find more prey in their own territory. Before the younger cats can start a fight with him, Graystripe quickly agrees. Flywhisker and Snaptooth agree and comment that they hope they don't find any ThunderClan patrols.
- The ThunderClan cats come across Hawkwing and his patrol, consisting of Tinycloud and Macgyver. Flipclaw nervously greets them, and Hawkwing curiously asks why they are so close to SkyClan's border. Flywhisker replies indignantly, telling the deputy that they aren't that close to SkyClan's border. Graystripe sees Macgyver and Tinycloud aggressively come closer to the patrol, and he begins to tell them that things are fine when Snaptooth interrupts him and tells them that they are leaving ThunderClan. Thornclaw calls him a mouse-brain, and Hawkwing tells them not to step over SkyClan's border.
- Graystripe exclaims at Snaptooth that he didn't have to say that, and Thornclaw asks him if he has thistle-fluff behind his ears. Graystripe tells the patrol to hunt, and Flywhisker offers to hunt with Graystripe. She retracts the offer after remembering that he's an elder, and Graystripe gags after hearing her sickly-sweet tone. He tells them that he needs to rest, even though he has no intention of resting.
- After the other cats on the patrol leave, Graystripe decides to hunt by himself, trying to show the younger cats that he can still catch prey. He catches a huge rabbit, and comes back to the clearing near the abandoned Twoleg nest where Thornclaw and Flipclaw are waiting. He places his prey on the fresh-kill pile, and thinks about where he wants to go on his wander. He thinks of all his old Clanmates like Firestar, who has gone to StarClan, and of Silverstream, his former mate. He hopes that she and Millie have met in StarClan. He remembers his son Stormfur and thinks that he has to go to the Tribe of Rushing Water.
- When Flywhisker and Snaptooth put their prey on the pile, Thornclaw asks who caught the huge rabbit. Graystripe tells him that he caught it, and Flywhisker is unable to look at him and embarrassingly licks her chest fur. The group starts to eat, and Flywhisker comments that this is easier than being in a Clan, as they had to hunt for the weak cats there, and abruptly finishes by telling the group that it's more manageable this way. Graystripe tells them that it is because they are young cats, and that they would want food if they were injured or having kits.
- Flipclaw tells Flywhisker that he would take care of her if she was having kits, and Graystripe notes that he didn't know that Flipclaw was padding after Flywhisker. Snaptooth discourages their relationship, and Flipclaw defends himself and says that he would do that for any queen. Flywhisker rejects Flipclaw and Flipclaw is very upset. Graystripe glances at Thornclaw, and realizes that the senior warrior must be thinking the same thing that Graystripe is.
- Flipclaw states that they should find new territory, and tells Flywhisker that she might change her mind later. The she-cat tells him that they can't all be in Flipclaw's imagination. Flipclaw challenges Snaptooth, asking him what he thinks the patrol should do. Graystripe is about to suggest going to the Tribe when Flywhisker wonders what it would feel like to be a kittypet. Snaptooth argues with Flywhisker about how being a kittypet is bad, and Thornclaw abruptly leaves, telling the patrol that he didn't leave his Clan to listen to mouse-brained arguments.
- The patrol wonders why Thornclaw left. Graystripe tells the younger cats that Thornclaw didn't leave ThunderClan to start his own Clan. Snaptooth asks why Graystripe left ThunderClan. Graystripe tells him that he wants to visit the Tribe of Rushing Water to see his son, surprising the younger cats.
