Chapter Description[]
- Graystripe is woken up by shrieks from the nursery. He realizes that Brightheart is kitting. His thoughts race back to Silverstream's kitting, and how she died. He sees Cinderpelt and Cloudtail exit the nursery, and Cinderpelt tells Cloudtail to get chervil root before the she-cat turns her attention to Graystripe. She asks him why he is shaking, and he replies that he is fine. He asks her if Brightheart's kitting is going well, and wonders how mother cats can stand the pain of kitting. He asks the medicine cat how much longer the kitting will take, and Cinderpelt tells him that it will take as long as it takes. She then goes back to the nursery.
- Cloudtail comes back with the chervil root, and Graystripe finally pokes his head into the nursery. He sees Ferncloud's kits, Shrewkit and Spiderkit, watching everything unfold. Cloudtail anxiously asks Cinderpelt why the kits aren't coming, but Cinderpelt's reply is covered up by Brightheart's wailing. Graystripe thinks to himself that he wants to go as far away as possible, but his thoughts are interrupting by the mewling of a kit. Cloudtail informs Brightheart that the kit is beautiful.
- Cinderpelt congratules Brightheart and tells her that there is only one kit. Brightheart bends down to lick the kit. Graystripe doesn't know what to say. After a moment, he welcomes the little kit to ThunderClan, and congratulates Brightheart. Shrewkit asks if he can play with her, and Ferncloud tells the little tom that the newborn kit is too young, and that he can play with her in a few days. Spiderkit exclaims that a few days is too long.
- Graystripe announces to the Clan that Brightheart has a kit and that the queen and the newborn kit are doing well. After the announcement, Graystripe thinks to himself that Firestar always helped with a queen's kitting, and that the he had done nothing with Brigtheart's. He looks up at Silverpelt, and hopes that Silverstream can see Brightheart and her newborn kit.
- The next morning, Graystripe asks Ashfur to lead a patrol to Sunningrocks. Ashfur nods in agreement, and asks who he should take with him. Before Graystripe can respond, Thornclaw, Sootpaw, and Brambleclaw report that WindClan scent mixed with blood had been found near Fourtrees. Ashfur challenges Graystripe, asking the temporary leader what he will do.
- Graystripe calls a Clan meeting. The Clan emerges from their dens, and Graystripe asks Thornclaw to tell the Clan what he saw. Thornclaw tells the Clan that WindClan has been hunting on their territory, and Brambleclaw proves his statement with the evidence at Fourtrees. After Brambleclaw finishes speaking, Ashfur asks Graystripe what the Clan is going to do about it. Cloudtail calls across camp to Graystripe, telling him to confront Tallstar about it, and Ashfur remarks that everything would be easier if Dustpelt was deputy. Graystripe hopes that Ashfur won't continue arguing about the deputy problem, and he remembers how Cinderpelt solved the problem last time.
- While Graystripe is thinking, Thornclaw pushes him to make a decision. Arguments pop up between the Clan members, and Graystripe tells them that they can't just go invade WindClan's camp and confront them about it. One-eye challenges his statement, but Graystripe retorts that this job is one for a Clan leader to do, and it will raise suspicions about where Firestar is if he goes instead. Brambleclaw tells the temporary leader that Firestar wouldn't have let this go, so doing nothing would also raise suspicion from WindClan. Graystripe agrees, and thinks to himself that Brambleclaw is a bright young cat. Thornclaw asks if Graystripe thought that maybe WindClan is stealing prey because they guessed Firestar that isn't there. Ashfur says that WindClan thinks that they can get away with it, and it seems like they're right.
- Graystripe turns towards Cinderpelt and asks if StarClan has sent any advice, but the medicine cat tells him that there has been nothing. Graystripe is thinking about the situation when Mousefur enters the camp, telling the Clan that Russetfur and Rowanclaw want to speak with Firestar. Graystripe is very dismayed.
