Chapter description[]

Graystripe stands on the Highrock and asks Mousefur if she brought the ShadowClan cats with her. She says that Dustpelt and Brackenfur are escorting them to camp, and asks him what they should do. Graystripe starts organizing the ThunderClan cats to make the camp look happy and busy, and he pads into the center of camp as they rush to obey his orders. Soon, Mousefur reemerges from the tunnel, followed by Russetfur, Rowanclaw, Brackenfur, and Dustpelt. Russetfur says that they'd like to speak with Firestar, and when Graystripe says that he's out of camp, Russetfur says that they'll wait. Graystripe hesitates, watching the Clan go about their business, then tells Russetfur that she can tell him anything as he is ThunderClan's deputy. Russetfur irritatedly says that they've scented BloodClan near ThunderClan territory. Cloudtail, Dustpelt, and Mousefur accuse ShadowClan of sheltering the rogues, and Graystripe apologizes and adds that they're grateful for the warning. He tells Mousefur and Brackenfur to escort the ShadowClan warriors back to the border, and they leave.
The ThunderClan cats begin discussing BloodClan's return and Firestar's absence. Graystripe tells them that the WindClan scent they found on ThunderClan territory was probably BloodClan in disguise, and is relieved when they agree. Graystripe tells Ashfur to take Thornclaw and Cloudtail to Fourtrees to check for BloodClan scent, then tells Dustpelt and Brambleclaw to come with him to the Thunderpath near Twolegplace to do the same. Graystripe and his patrol heads for the Thunderpath, and Graystripe asks Brambleclaw if he can smell anything. Brambleclaw replies that he can't detect any trace of BloodClan. As the patrol nears the Thunderpath, is starts to rain. They reach the edge of the Thunderpath and are ambushed by multiple BloodClan cats.
Graystripe counts eight muscular BloodClan cats and watches as they stand still for a few moments. He notices a patchy-furred pregnant she-cat among them and thinks that she may not fight as fiercely as the others. Dustpelt mutters that he can smell WindClan, and Graystripe loudly responds that he was right. A long-furred tabby she-cat says that BloodClan would never roll around in WindClan scent, but Graystripe retorts that he knew their plan was to get ThunderClan to fight WindClan. The she-cat says that BloodClan still wants ThunderClan's territory and that they know that Firestar is gone. The BloodClan cats then attack the patrol.
The tabby she-cat slams into Graystripe, but he pounds her with his hind paws until she rolls away. He spots Dustpelt battling two ginger she-cats and Brambleclaw grappling with a patchy tom. He tells Brambleclaw to run, which the young warrior reluctantly does. Graystripe looks around for Dustpelt only to see that a Black-and-white tom has joined the two she-cats attacking him. The BloodClan leader and the three remaining BloodClan cats, one of them being the pregnant she-cat, herd Graystripe toward the Twolegplace and begin pummeling him with blows from all sides. Graystripe is knocked off his paws and is unable to get back up.
The BloodClan leader growls to throw him to the dog in the Twolegplace. The BloodClan cats drag Graystripe to a hole in the nearby Twoleg fence and toss him in, then block the hole with a rock. Graystripe lies still until the BloodClan cats leave, then rises cautiously to his paws to see that he is on the edge of a Twoleg garden. He hears barking and stiffens, but then realizes that the barking is coming from the other side of the Twoleg nest. He laughs at the BloodClan cats' stupidity. Graystripe climbs a tree to escape the garden and looks around for any sign of Dustpelt, but he isn't there, and he thinks that he must have escaped back to camp. He spots the pregnant she-cat crouched near the Thunderpath and thinks that she'll call her friends, but she does nothing, only watching Graystripe as he escapes.
