"Though...if I'm being honest with myself...I can't tell if my leadership is doing the Clan any good. Nominating Fang to be my deputy was the right move. But...what if he'd be a better leader than I am? What if he decides he wants to be leader? What would I do if he challenged me? I don't know."

Chapter description[]

A moon after Graystripe leaves to return to ThunderClan, Monkeystar, the leader of WarriorClan, reflects on her leadership. As she watches Bugeater attempt and fail to silently pounce on Fang, Monkeystar questions if her leadership is doing the Clan any good. She wonders if Fang, her deputy, will notice her hesitance and believe he will make a better leader and challenge her. Petunia, the Clan's medicine cat, has been missing for three days, and Monkeystar gathers up Lily, Clawwhistle and Bugeater to search for Petunia to make sure she's alright. Fang asks why he's not joining them, considering he's one of the Clan's strongest warriors, but Monkeystar insists they won't be gone for long and he needs to look after the camp in her absence.
As the patrol searches for their Clanmate, Clawwhistle remarks how he's reminded of the time they went off with Graystripe to the Moonstone. Monkeystar realizes she and her cats have strayed into some other cats' territory, and four kittypets appear and challenge them for trespassing. Monkeystar attempts to diffuse the situation by explaining they are just passing through, but the kittypets instigate a fight. Despite knowing they could win, Monkeystar calls for a retreat. She notices Clawwhistle's injured muzzle, but he insists it's only a scratch.
The WarriorClan cats find Petunia sitting sombrely near her old Twoleg nest. Monkeystar is relieved to find Petunia safe, but explains WarriorClan really needs their medicine cat. Petunia apologies, but struggles to accept that her Twoleg is really gone. Lily, who also lived with Petunia, comforts her friend and insists WarriorClan is their home now. Petunia sadly admits she's right, and Monkeystar comes up with an idea to cheer Petunia up. They head for the Moonstone, and Monkeystar explains that Graystripe once told her the Moonstone will show cats what they need to see and she asks Petunia to give it a chance. Petunia agrees and heads inside.
A few hours later, Petunia emerges in delight and explains how she saw Gremlin's spirit. Petunia asks about Marigold and her old Twoleg, and Gremlin reveals Marigold's spirit is with her. She adds that Petunia's Twoleg is no longer in pain and she is happy now, and Petunia can be happy too if she focuses on her Clanmates. Petunia vows to herself that's just what she'll do, and the patrol returns to camp. Fang and the others greet them, and Fang remarks that he hasn't seen Petunia this happy in forever. He adds whatever Monkeystar did, it proves that she will make a fine leader of WarriorClan.
