Chapter description

Gremlin and Snake hide in the shelter of a holly bush, the former remarking that there is no sign of a cat they are watching for. She wonders if their spies had gotten it wrong, earning a grunt from the black-and-white tom beside her. The she-cat begins to groom herself, recoiling at the taste of chervil that the pair of them had used to hide their scent. Suddenly, Snake growls that he has spotted the cat that they were looking for, Firestar, and his mate Sandstorm. The two ginger cats are seen leaving the territory, the act exciting the two hiding cats.

The pair, by Snake's urging, to report their findings, leave the forest to return to the Twolegplace. On the return journey, Gremlin feels her unborn kits as she keeps pace with Snake. She notes that it is a bad time for war to happen due to BloodClan wanting revenge for their leader's death. The she-cat wishes they could hold if off just a little longer, and wonders what might happen to her kits if she does fight.

At Twolegplace, Gremlin and Snake find BloodClan and their latest leader, Fury, gathered beside a row of monster dens. The tortoiseshell recalls that many cats had stepped up to lead BloodClan following Scourge's death and that Fury is the latest of them. She notes that the previous leader, Claw, had supposedly been killed by dogs, but the image of Fury returning with wet blood on her paws made it seem otherwise. Gremlin and Snake report their findings to the tabby she-cat whose voice shakes with excitement as she announces BloodClan's time for revenge will be soon. The cats of BloodClan yowl out their agreement and excitement and Gremlin catches the voice of her brother, Scraps. She doesn't feel his enthusiasm as she notes that ThunderClan outnumbers the remaining BloodClan cats and their cats are well trained. Gremlin spares a thought to her unborn kits, dreading the fight even more as her thoughts conclude on it being a bloodbath.
