"That's forever! We want to be apprentices now!" |
— Graykit to Flamepaw in River, page 79 |
Graywhisker is a white tom with gray spots.[1]
Graywhisker is a ThunderClan warrior under Squirrelstar's leadership in the lake territories. Graykit was born alongside Bristlekit and Stemkit to Spotfur and Stemleaf, however the latter died before they were born. When he was made an apprentice as Graypaw, Finchlight was chosen as his mentor. After completing his training, he earned the name Graywhisker.
History[]
In A Starless Clan arc[]
River[]
- Graykit: "We never get to have any fun!"
- Daisy: "Poking your eye out is not fun!"
- River, page 81
- Graykit and his littermates, Bristlekit and Stemkit, excitedly ask to help Flamepaw clear out the elders' den. They wish to be apprentices as soon as possible, and after enough of their begging, Flamepaw decides they can help him clear old bedding. The kits excitedly agree, and together they help clear the nests. However, Daisy calls for the kits and scolds Flamepaw for letting them help. She especially scolds Graykit for swinging a twig in his jaws at Stemkit. Lilyheart later scolds Flamepaw for his behavior, though Sparkpelt defends him. Later, Finchlight plays with the kits, and they sit with their mother Spotfur at Flamepaw's warrior ceremony.
Sky[]
- When Bayshine offers to clean out the nursery, Squirrelflight reassures him that Daisy and Spotfur have already taken care of that. Whilst Daisy carries tattered bracken, Graykit and his siblings scurry after her while carrying leaf scraps. When Nightheart carries a mouse to the nursery, he merely greets Graykit and his siblings.
Thunder[]
- Spotfur calls out to Graykit and his siblings to announce Ivypool's arrival. Graykit asks anxiously if they have to fight Sunbeam, but Stemkit calls him silly and asks how fighting kits would prove her a good ThunderClan warrior. Ivypool introduces each kit to Sunbeam and explains her trial, which will be for all of them to catch enough prey to feed the elders, but only the kits may catch prey. Nightheart says it will be tricky as the kits have never hunted before while Graykit swipes at Bristlekit's tail. Sunbeam anxiously ponders teaching them how to hunt as a team while Stemkit tackles Graykit and they playwrestle, but all three come to attention when she calls to them. Graykit announces proudly that he once nearly caught a mouse but Bristlekit says he ended up getting scared and tripping over his tail, and Graykit protests that he did not. Stemkit defends him and says Graykit was only half a moon old and the mouse was nearly as big as him, and Sunbeam says he was brave to try at such a young age. Sunbeam tells the kits her first piece of prey was a frog and Graykit is alarmed by this, and then says he wants to catch every type of prey in the forest and lake one day, including fish. Stemkit says this will take a long time, to which Graykit says he will be a warrior for a long time. Graykit decides that the prey a cat eats has nothing to do with what Clan they are from, as he wants to catch all the prey but does not want to join any other Clan to do so.
- The trial begins and the kits copy Sunbeam's careful movements, Graykit frowning in concentration as he tries to keep his balance. Bristlekit asks what prey they will catch and Graykit does not want to catch mice, so Sunbeam says they will see what they find. She asks what they can smell and Graykit says he can smell moss. They find a vole burrow and Sunbeam directs Graykit to crouch next to it and watch out for movement. He has the job of chasing any voles that come out of the burrow towards his brother, so he turns his attention to it. A vole pokes its head out of the burrow but goes back in when Graykit jumps at it, but Sunbeam reassures him and tells him it will come back out. It does, and this time Graykit waits before jumping at it and chasing it, but it shoots past Stemkit and hides. They try again, Graykit going back to the burrow and crouching in wait for another vole. Graykit's eyes flicker over to Stemkit to make sure he is ready before he chases a vole towards him. Stemkit catches this vole, and Graykit praises his brother excitedly. They swap places with Bristlekit catching the prey now to Graykit's dismay, but Sunbeam assures him he will get his turn, saying he was like a real warrior, which makes Graykit light up. Graykit goes to his position proudly. They end up catching one vole for each elder, and are disappointed when it is time to head back to camp. Graykit says he is ready to catch a mouse now. They want to stay out longer but Ivypool and Spotfur appear, telling them they did a good job. Sunbeam says they are lovely kits and Spotfur says they will sleep well that night, to which they protest as they want to stay up and hunt. Graykit says he will search the whole hollow for mice as their mother guides them away.
- Graykit is with his mother and siblings when Squirrelstar returns from receiving her nine lives. Brambleclaw says although he is an elder, he can take care of his own ticks, looking at Graykit and his siblings as he does so.
- Later, Graykit plays with a moss ball in the clearing with Stemkit and Bristlekit while Spotfur watches.
Wind[]
- Graypaw: "So SkyClan is a stinky Clan? I don't think I want to meet them."
- Finchlight: "They are not stinky. Their scent is different from ours, that's all - they probably don't like ThunderClan scent. Don't let me ever hear any of you call any cat's scent yucky or stinky.''"
- Wind, page 199
- Bayshine plays with Graykit and his siblings. Later, Graypaw is apprenticed to Finchlight. He goes on a tour of the territory with his siblings and is amazed by the size of the lake. He complains about SkyClan's scent and is reprimanded by his mentor. Graypaw asks a lot of questions and listens well to Finchlight, Nightheart, and Bayshine. While playing with Bristlepaw, the three mentors decide to scare them, hoping it will teach them to always be on alert. The two apprentices are successfully frightened and pay attention to their surroundings on the way back to camp.
- Later, a storm looms over the Clans. Graypaw and the other apprentices are tasked with hiding prey into the cleft of a rock. After they finish, they help Nightheart and Sunbeam collect bramble tendrils. After the storm, Graypaw and his siblings help Wafflepaw clean up the camp.
Star[]
- When Pouncestep remarks that kits have thistledown for brains after Sunbeam tells her she managed to train them, Sunbeam suddenly feels protective of Bristlepaw, Graypaw, and Stempaw, feeling secretly pleased that she had helped with their training. Back in camp, Graypaw pulls stale bedding from the elders' den with his brother Stempaw, and later on is seen practicing battle moves with his sister, Bristlepaw.
In the Changing Skies arc[]
The Elders' Quest[]
- He is now a warrior named Graywhisker. After Moonpaw attends her first Gathering, Graywhisker and his littermates surround her enthusiastically, and he asks her if she enjoyed it.
In the Novellas[]
Daisy's Kin[]
- "Daisy, you must come see Spotfur. She's had her kits, and they're so beautiful! But she could use you, Daisy. We all give her as much help as we can, but she needs an experienced she-cat to be with her all the time."
- ―Alderheart to Daisy about Spotfur's kits Daisy's Kin, chapter 9
- While staying at the horseplace with Smoky and his kits, Mousewhisker, Sparkpelt, and Sorrelstripe arrive for Daisy's help, explaining that Spotfur has given birth to her kits. Daisy is surprised that Spotfur was even expecting, and Mousewhisker remarks that Spotfur was surprised as well, but needs Daisy's help since Spotfur's mate, Stemleaf, is dead. Daisy promises to think about it, and the Clan cats leave. That night, Daisy reflects about leaving the barn to return to her Clan. She thinks to herself that she was overwhelmed by the loss of her kits, the fear of potentially losing Mousewhisker, and her worries that she is no longer needed in ThunderClan. She now knows, however, that she is valued in ThunderClan, and that she will be able to help Spotfur and her newborn kits. She reflects how ThunderClan came together to save Coriander and Little Daisy, and Daisy knows they will do the same for Spotfur's kits. Daisy returns to ThunderClan the following morning, and the Clan excited greets her, with Alderheart ushering her to the nursery to meet Spotfur's kits.
