Tallstar's Revenge[]

"The tunnelers are never around when we need them."
―Hareflight about WindClan's tunnelers Tallstar's Revenge, page 184
Hareflight is a WindClan warrior, the mate of Mistmouse, a WindClan tunneler. He is also the father of Ryekit, Doekit, and Stagkit. When Heatherstar calls a meeting in the Meeting Hollow, Hareflight and Mistmouse are present. Mistmouse brushes past Hareflight while he stands stiff. Heatherstar pads to the center where Hareflight is seen nudging Doekit and Ryekit closer to the edge of the hollow, as his kits' apprentice ceremony is occurring. Shrewkit guesses that Woollytail will mentor one of them, but Barkkit points out that Hareflight is a moor-runner, and Shrewkit says Mistmouse will want at least one of them as a tunneler. Hareflight and Mistmouse sit proudly as their kits are apprenticed.
After the ceremony, the tunnelers are shocked that not even one of their kits is apprenticed as a tunneler, and when they confront Mistmouse, Hareflight presses close to his mate and tells the tunnelers that they have decided that they want them all to be moor-runners. When the tunnelers still are not convinced, Heatherstar pads towards them and says she knows they are disappointed, but explains that Mistmouse and Hareflight want their kits to train as moor-runners. She adds that she has to respect the pair's wishes. Afterwards, Reedfeather calls a couple of moor runners over to hunt. Hareflight races after Appledawn and suggests hunting the high outcrops, reaching the camp entrance in three bounds.
Later, when Tallkit is ready to become an apprentice, Hareflight sits next to Shrewpaw, his new apprentice. During Tallkit's apprentice ceremony, his mentor is revealed to be Dawnstripe, causing outrage from the tunnelers. When the Clan is supposed to chant, it is silent at first, but Cloudrunner starts, followed by Hareflight, then the rest of the Clan. When Tallpaw exits the camp for the first time, Hareflight, along with the other apprentices and their mentors, follow him.
The next day, Dawnstripe wakes Tallpaw, mentioning that Hareflight and his apprentice have been pacing the entrance since dawn. Hareflight calls for Tallpaw to stop dawdling as his apprentice paces beside him. Shrewpaw asks Cloudrunner if he can help with the older apprentices' assessment, and Cloudrunner tells him to ask Hareflight. After Sandgorse and Hickorynose pass by, Hareflight marches past Shrewpaw, telling them to come. He starts leading them to a clearing on the hillside, where he bursts from the heather behind Tallpaw and Dawnstripe, and orders Shrewpaw to run three laps. While Shrewpaw runs, he slithers between Dawnstripe and Hareflight. Hareflight orders Shrewpaw to run longer strides, and he compliments Shrewpaw's paw movement.
After Tallpaw does a successful lap, Hareflight compliments and praises him. He glances up at the hillside and states they should meet the other apprentices and mentors for the older apprentices' assessments. When Shrewpaw states he will be better acting as a rabbit, Hareflight narrows his eyes and states that Shrewpaw is good at open-running, but Tallpaw will perform better in the heather because he is smaller and more nimble. After the chase, Hareflight runs to Tallpaw with Aspenfall and Larksplash and says that the chase was impressive.
When the older apprentices and their mentors leave for the rest of their assessments, Shrewpaw asks if they can hunt, but Hareflight tells him to practice battle moves first. Shrewpaw complains that Tallpaw does not know any, but Hareflight tells him to teach Tallpaw. After Shrewpaw attacks too roughly, Hareflight scolds him and reminds him that it is Tallpaw's first time. Tallpaw fends off Shrewpaw remarkably, and Hareflight praises him while Shrewpaw grumbles and pushes into the heather. Hareflight and Dawnstripe exchange glances before Hareflight hurries after his apprentice. Dawnstripe mentions that Hareflight will have a word with Shrewpaw about his attitude.
Later, when Tallpaw is preparing for his first dawn patrol, Dawnstripe mentions that Hareflight will re-mark the border near Fourtrees and ShadowClan with Shrewpaw, Doespring, and Appledawn. At the night of the full moon, before WindClan leaves for the Gathering, Hareflight is seen practicing battle moves with Shrewpaw. Ryestalk soon follows Hareflight across the grass. At the Gathering, Tallpaw peers over Hareflight, Shrewpaw, and Appledawn.
After the greenleaf visitors arrive, a band of rogues who travel to WindClan every greenleaf to share food and tell stories, Hareflight is mentioned to be patrolling the boundaries with his apprentice. They approach Tallpaw, Reena, and Dawnstripe, who are talking to Woollytail. Shrewpaw asks if Reena can come with them to Outlook Rock, but Hareflight states they look busy, and he tells Dawnstripe to not let them hold them up. Dawnstripe tells him she is returning to camp with Woollytail. Hareflight asks what is wrong, but Dawnstripe does not tell, and asks for him to take Tallpaw. Hareflight agrees and Reena asks to come, and Shrewpaw looks at Hareflight, asking the same thing. Hareflight states that Reena does not need to know everything about how WindClan trains its warriors. He swaps looks with Dawnstripe and suggests that Reena go back to camp with Dawnstripe. Dawnstripe takes her with Woollytail and Hareflight breaks into a run, calling to Shrewpaw and Tallpaw.
At Outlook Rock, Hareflight stands on the grass and tells Shrewpaw to go first, and reminds him of the importance of observation. As Shrewpaw reports what he sees, Tallpaw requests to try, and Hareflight allows it. Tallpaw says that he can see a buzzard showing its offspring how to fly, and Shrewpaw argues with him. Despite Shrewpaw's protests, Hareflight praises Tallpaw on his guesswork. Shrewpaw, grumpy again, stomps to Hareflight's side.
Tallpaw follows Hareflight, Shrewpaw, and Dawnstripe towards the entrance of the camp. Hareflight follows Tallpaw into camp, observing that the tunnelers may have news about the tunnel, and he allows Shrewpaw and Tallpaw to eat. Later, when ShadowClan is attacking WindClan camp, Stonetooth attacks Hareflight, who manages to avoid him. He fights a ShadowClan tom alongside Shrewpaw in front of the medicine den. He pulls the ShadowClan tom backwards, but the ShadowClan warrior fights back, so Shrewpaw bites his hind legs. Hareflight helps Dawnstripe chase out a group of the ShadowClan warriors.
At the end of the battle, Brackenwing is badly injured, and Hareflight stands with Cloudrunner as Brackenwing is treated. He comforts Shrewpaw over his mother's death. Tallpaw reveals that he had scented ShadowClan, but did not report it because he thought they were going to Highstones, and blames himself for Brackenwing's death. Shrewpaw attacks Tallpaw, and Hareflight intervenes, telling Shrewpaw to have control. Shrewpaw gets away from Hareflight, but only glares at Tallpaw, and Hareflight, Aspenfall, and Cloudrunner carry Brackenwing to the grassy hollow. Later, the tunnelers appear, having not taken part in the battle. Hickorynose is upset that he was not present to protect Meadowslip, his pregnant mate, and Hareflight accuses the tunnelers of never being present for WindClan.
After Tallpaw injures himself trying to find his father, Reedfeather orders Hareflight, Stagleap, and Shrewpaw to patrol the ShadowClan and Fourtrees border. After the birth of Meadowslip's kits, Hareflight expresses excitement that WindClan is finally experiencing a positive event. Heatherstar announces that there will be no more tunnelers in WindClan, especially trained ones, and Tallpaw races out of camp in anger and tries entering one of the tunnels. Dawnstripe pulls him out, and Hareflight asks if he is okay through the rain, as Shrewpaw races past him to sneer at Tallpaw. Hareflight tells him to stop teasing Tallpaw. Hareflight circles Tallpaw and scolds him for leaving the Clan meeting, worrying everyone. Hareflight remarks that the visitors will think that WindClan has no control over their apprentices. The two apprentices then fight, and Hareflight holds Shrewpaw back by his scruff while Dawnstripe deals with Tallpaw.
When the greenleaf visitors are ready to leave and say their goodbyes, Shrewpaw says his goodbye to Reena before rushing to his mentor's side. Later, when Tallpaw is out with a hunting patrol, he notes that he will become a warrior, then a senior warrior like Hareflight. Later, Hareflight enters the camp with Dawnstripe, and they separate. After Tallpaw and Shrewpaw eat the travelling herbs for their journey to the Moonstone, Hareflight waits by the entrance with Dawnstripe. On the way, Hareflight hurries them onward, pointing out the moon, and rushes toward the Thunderpath.
Before the cats cross the Thunderpath, Hareflight and Shrewpaw warily make their way to a ditch, and Shrewpaw impatiently asks if they can go. Hareflight tells him to wait until he says they can go, but Shrewpaw insists that he can get through, and he races across as Hareflight starts to warn him. Hareflight chases after him, and when Shrewpaw freezes in front of a monster, Hareflight manages to push his apprentice out of the way. Dawnstripe and Tallpaw see them on the other side, and after they make it across, Hareflight comments that he will never get accustomed to crossing the Thunderpath.
As they approach Highstones, Hareflight follows Tallpaw, and he leaps up after Dawnstripe to Mothermouth. Hareflight takes the rear as they enter the tunnel to the Moonstone, and the sound of his paw steps reassures Tallpaw. Shrewpaw teases Tallpaw for being afraid, and Hareflight silences him. When they reach the cavern, the Moonstone is not visible, and Hareflight comments that the moon may be covered by clouds and tells the apprentices to wait. After the Moonstone lights up, Shrewpaw asks if they should touch it, and Hareflight replies that he must in order to share with StarClan as he settles beside Dawnstripe.
When Shrewpaw wakes up, he tries to explain what he saw, but Hareflight quiets him, telling him that only medicine cats can share what StarClan tells them. Hareflight and Shrewpaw follow Dawnstripe as they leave, and are making their way down the rocky slope by the time Tallpaw catches up. Later, after Tallpaw's sight assessment on top of the Outlook Rock, Hareflight asks how he did, and Dawnstripe says that he passed. Hareflight reports that Shrewpaw also did well. Dawnstripe decides to assess the apprentices' battle skills as their final test. When the apprentices begin fighting, Tallpaw is aware that Shrewpaw will use his claws once Hareflight and Dawnstripe cannot see them. Tallpaw is angered after Shrewpaw makes a remark about his father, and injures Shrewpaw badly. Hareflight shields his apprentice and scolds Tallpaw. He checks Shrewpaw wounds, but Shrewpaw moves away, insisting that he is okay. Dawnstripe reassures Tallpaw, though Hareflight seems wary of him. Back at camp, Doespring asks Shrewpaw what happened, and Hareflight reports the fight. He tells Shrewpaw to get treated by Hawkheart, then reports to Heatherstar. Just before Shrewpaw's warrior ceremony, Hareflight stands beside Reedfeather.
Over a couple of moons later, after the birth of Palebird's kits, Hareflight stands at the rim of the Meeting Hollow, yawning. He then heads for the entrance of the camp beside Appledawn. Cloudrunner says that he will search the brambles with Hareflight as Hareflight barely avoids a branch poking his eye. Suddenly, two cats appear near the RiverClan border, and Hareflight observes that, since RiverClan is hunting land prey, the river is likely frozen. After Talltail lets Nightsky and Piketooth catch a rabbit on WindClan territory and get away, Hareflight tells him that WindClan must care for their own.
When Heatherstar calls for a Clan meeting for Talltail to speak to the Clan, Hareflight approaches alongside Cloudrunner and Shrewclaw. Talltail announces that he is leaving, shocking the Clan. Hareflight, despite his confusion, wishes Talltail well. When Talltail returns to WindClan, he saves Palebird's kits by catching a hawk that was hunting them. Heatherstar enters the camp and says that Hareflight and Redclaw are bringing the hawk, and Hareflight soon drags the hawk into camp with Redclaw's help. Later, Talltail realizes that something is wrong with Hopkit upon hearing Meadowslip fretting over him, and he tells Doespring and Hareflight that he cannot patrol because he has to check on Hopkit, to Hareflight's annoyance.
It is discovered ShadowClan has been stealing prey, and a ShadowClan patrol attacks a WindClan hunting patrol. Reedfeather comes with Hareflight and other warriors, both cats racing to help Plumclaw. After the battle, Hareflight crouches over Shrewclaw, who was injured in the battle. He says that Shrewclaw will die protecting WindClan from ShadowClan, much like his mother, Brackenwing. When Shrewclaw dies, Hareflight and he sobs out his former apprentice's name and licks Shrewclaw's eyes closed, and he murmurs praise for Shrewclaw.
