- While searching for a camp, River Ripple hears kits' cries and follows the sound. He greets their mother, who tells him that Clear Sky chased her and her kits off his territory. He allows her time to feed her kits, and she returns with a ginger she-kit, Hunter, and a white tom-kit, Scout. Hunter introduces herself to River Ripple. The queen, Cleo, explains that she left her Twolegs because they were going to send away her kits, and she wraps her tail around them. River Ripple takes Cleo and her kits back to his cats, letting Hunter ride on his back, and Hunter tells Hollow that they had been at the river. When Night questions Cleo's ability to help out, she watches Hunter and Scout, and over a few days, she warms up to the kits, playing with them.
- While taking Cleo to learn to fish, Night warns that Hunter and Scout may rush into the water if Cleo learns to swim. When Casper, Cleo's mate, enters the camp, his kits greet him happily, with Hunter asking if he will be staying there. The kits are disappointed when he says that he wants to take them home, but continue to play excitedly around him while their parents discuss what is best for the kits. Hunter is dismayed when Cleo tells the kits that they are going home with Casper, and River Ripple invites the kits for a meal before they go. River Ripple misses the kits once they are gone, though he is later told by Cleo that Hunter and Scout are still with their parents.
