"My warriors have been brave, but you have shown courage beyond your calling."
This article contains major spoilers for the recently released book, Star. Please proceed at your own discretion.
"I want [RiverClan] to be a Clan that can weather any storm. I want our Clanmates to have a depth of honor that means that whatever they face, they will always behave like true warriors. RiverClan has been struggling for a long time. But if I've learned anything from my time away from the Clans, it's that being a true warrior is something that happens in your heart. It can't be learned through rules. It can't be taught through training. It must be felt first."
— Icewing to Frostdawn in Star, page 312

Icestar is a wiry,[20] lightly-built,[21] snowy[22] white she-cat[1] with brilliant[20] blue eyes[1] and a sharp, pointed face.[20]

Icestar is the current leader of RiverClan in the lake territories. Originating from the old forest, she was born as Icekit and eventually became an apprentice named Icepaw. In their new home by the lake, Icewing and Mintfur became mates and had two litters of kits at their new home by the lake: Petalkit, Beetlekit, Grasskit, Pricklekit, Breezekit, and Nightkit. Icewing trained in the Dark Forest alongside her son Beetlewhisker, but Icewing fought for the Clans during the Great Battle and was forgiven by Mistystar. When Darktail's Kin drove RiverClan from their territory, Icewing was taken prisoner, being forced to swear an oath of loyalty to Darktail and his group of cats. Once Mistystar reclaimed her land, Icewing returned to serving RiverClan.

After a brief time of peace between the Clans, she fought against her birth Clan in a battle between the Clans. This caused Mistystar to exile her, alongside Harelight, for treason against RiverClan. Tigerstar, not agreeing with Mistystar's actions, welcomed the exiles into ShadowClan. She returned to RiverClan after the defeat of the impostor, and she later mentored Mistpaw. During a time of leadership turmoil in RiverClan, Icewing stood up for Tigerstar's temporary leadership of the Clan, and Tigerstar chose her to lead the Clan with Cloverfoot until a proper leader could be found. Duskfur later took over leadership duties until Podlight appointed Splashtail. After Splashtail banished her from RiverClan, Icewing joined the quest prompted by Whistlepaw's vision. Upon her return, Frostdawn chose her to be RiverClan's new leader as Icestar.

In the Power of Three arc

Icewing is a RiverClan queen. She is with her Clan while they temporarily take refuge on the island, and she gives birth to Beetlekit, Petalkit, Grasskit, and Pricklekit. She reassures Petalkit when the young kit gets pine needles in her paws.

In the Omen of the Stars arc

"Why do we have to train in this stinking forest? Why can't we train on our own land?"
―Icewing in the Dark Forest The Last Hope, page 226
Icewing returns to her warrior duties, and three of her kits are now warriors, Petalfur, Beetlewhisker, and Grasspelt. Ivypool spots her in the Dark Forest with other Clan cats, training alongside her son, Beetlewhisker. She is enthusiastic in her training, even remarking that when the final battle comes, they should scare the cats, then scar them. Despite this, shortly before the battles, she warns the other trainees to not let Tigerstar see their fear and to follow his instructions completely; otherwise they will not make it out alive. When Mapleshade questions their secretive discussion, Icewing lies that they are planning their strategy, but the Dark Forest cat remains unconvinced.

In the A Vision of Shadows arc

"That's right. Thanks to you, we've driven Darktail and his rogues out of our territory!"
―Icewing thanking Alderheart's patrol Shattered Sky, page 227
Icewing has a new litter of kits: Breezekit and Nightkit. During the Kin's campaign, RiverClan is defeated and driven out from their camp, though Icewing, Mintfur, Brackenpelt, and Reedwhisker are imprisoned. After Darktail takes Violetpaw and Needletail down to the lake, Icewing and the other prisoners seize the opportunity to attack their tormentors, along with the press-ganged kittypets and former ShadowClan cats siding with them. After recovering in ThunderClan, Icewing returns to RiverClan, though she and her Clanmates protest against ShadowClan, whose territory was originally taken over by the Kin. When SkyClan is driven away from the other Clans during a large storm, Icewing, Willowshine, and Lizardtail participate in the rescue patrol to bring them back to the lake.

In The Broken Code arc

"I know some cats in ShadowClan don't trust you, but I believe you are a good cat, Shadowsight. Don't make Tigerstar and Dovewing suffer as I have. Thank you for your help."
―Icewing warning Shadowsight The Place of No Stars, page 98
Icewing and Harelight join the rebels, wishing to overthrow Bramblestar's impostor after his heinous and destructive behavior towards the Clans. During a devastating battle between the five Clans, Icewing and Harelight fight against the impostor and RiverClan, who sided with ThunderClan. Despite the impostor's defeat, Mistystar exiles Icewing and Harelight for betraying their Clanmates. They are welcomed into ShadowClan by Tigerstar, and Icewing holds some resentment towards Mistystar for their exile. When Shadowsight enters the Dark Forest, Icewing praises his bravery but reminds him of the dangers, being a former Dark Forest trainee and the fact that her son, Beetlewhisker, was killed there. After the battle against Ashfur, Icewing and Harelight are welcomed back into RiverClan.

In the A Starless Clan arc

"I want my warriors to be warriors from the heart. I want them to enjoy being warriors, to feel they are following their deepest nature. I want the other Clans to respect us not because they fear us, but because they trust us. I want StarClan to be proud of us."
―Icewing to Frostdawn Star, page 313
Icewing is now mentoring her first apprentice, Mistpaw. Following the abrupt deaths of Mistystar, Reedwhisker, and Curlfeather, Icewing and the other experienced warriors are reluctant to take leadership. After Tigerstar's take over of RiverClan, he appoints Icewing and Cloverfoot to co-lead RiverClan while he is away, though several RiverClan cats question Icewing's loyalty due to her being a former ShadowClan cat. She speaks for RiverClan at the emergency Gatherings, though she is dissented by Mallownose, Duskfur, and Splashtail. When Scorchfur accidentally ingests a mouse with a thorn it in, Cloverfoot confers with Icewing about the possibility of several RiverClan cats plotting against them. Icewing is aware something is going on, but has limited power on what she can do.
While Tree mediates between RiverClan and ShadowClan, Duskfur is chosen by her peers to be temporary leader instead. However, Icewing, Mothwing, and Duskfur begin to agree with Frostpaw's claims that Splashtail is usurping power and work together to convince their Clanmates to rebel. However, Splashtail learns of their schemes and orders their deaths, resulting in the three she-cats seeking refuge in ShadowClan. Icewing leaves to join the other Clans on a joint-patrol on a journey ordered by StarClan. Upon her return nearly a moon later, Frostdawn chooses her to be RiverClan's new leader. Icestar is granted nine lives, and she appoints Owlnose as her deputy.

"I'm not sure I ever really did. I had lost kits before, so the pain was intense. It still hurts to think that I'll never see Beetlewhisker again, not even when my paws take the path to StarClan. But I know that I won't honor his memory by not living my life. The more I do for my Clan and my Clanmates, the more I achieve as a warrior, the more I ensure that Beetlewhisker's memory will never be lost. Raising my kits was the best thing I've ever done, and each one of them will always be a part of me. That means Beetlewhisker will live on, in a way. That's what works for me, anyway. [...] That's what grief is: It seems like a dark hole you fall into, and you feel alone in there. It's had to see the others around you."
―Icewing to Ivypool about her grief over Beetlewhisker's death Ivypool's Heart, page 56
In Ivypool's Heart, Icewing catches up with Ivypool, Dovewing, Rootspring, and Whistlepaw when they set out on their quest prompted by an unknown dream. During the journey, Ivypool finds comfort in her grief over Bristlefrost when Icewing shares that her son Beetlewhisker's spirit is also gone forever. Icewing comments how serving her Clanmates helps her to remind Icewing of Beetlewhisker's memory, and she empathizes with Ivypool's grief. After learning about StormClan from Stalk Purr and Tumble Leap, Icewing and the others journey to the Star Tree to learn more about StormClan's history. There, Galestar stresses the Clan cats to bring the wildcats to the rest of their group beyond the mountains. After helping Stalk Purr and Tumble Leap escape, Stalk Purr gives birth to Pounce, Stretch, and Hunt. Icewing and Ivypool venture to find the group of wildcats, and they earn their trust by fighting off foxes. Icewing and Ivypool enter the realm of the ancestors to find Galestar, and they travel along the River of Spirits to StarClan. There, they witness the StormClan ancestors rematerialize, though Stripestar gives an ominous warning about RiverClan's future. Icewing is eager to return home to her Clan as soon as possible.

"Icewing knows her loyalty was tested by the Dark Forest, and that she failed. But she has learned from this and I do not doubt her now. She has always been a good warrior. I would like to give her the chance to be one again."
―Mistystar about Icewing Dovewing's Silence, chapter 4
In Dovewing's Silence, Mistystar vouches for Icewing to remain in RiverClan despite training in the Dark Forest, and Icewing swears a new vow of loyalty to her Clan.

Personality and traits

"You're talking about Beetlewhisker? As I told you before, I try to live my life to honor his memory. And no cat was ever kitted who didn't have to deal with some sadness."
―Icewing to Ivypool about Stalk Purr's kitting Ivypool's Heart, page 279
Shaped by the death of her kits, her time in the Dark Forest, and her exile from her own Clan,[28] Icestar is determined,[29][30][31] pragmatic,[28][31][32] and at times blunt[31][33][34][35] and distant.[36] She is also clever,[37] calm,[38] and self-possessed with rare outbursts of emotion.[34] To manage her grief, Icestar dedicates herself entirely to serving in Clan to honor the loss of her kits.[28] Ivypool considers Icestar to be wise, especially with how she handles her grief.[32] The havoc caused by Splashtail resulted in Icestar becoming more determined to save her Clan.[29][34]

Trivia

Author statements

  • Kate loves the idea of Icestar and Duskfur being littermates, but could not find any evidence in her notes for it being true. She believes they probably grew up and trained together, thinking they have a deep bond.[42]

Mistakes

  • She has been mistakenly described with green eyes.[39][blog 3]
  • In Mistystar's Omen, she is said to have gone on the journey to the beaver dam, when it was actually her daughter, Petalfur, who went to the beaver dam with Rippletail.[43]
  • She is listed as a member of RiverClan in the allegiances of Ivypool's Heart[44] and Star,[45] despite having left in exile at the end of Wind.[46]

Continuity

The following information is from sources considered non-canon, retconned, or from adapted material.

  • In Su Susann's "Missing Kits" on Vicky's Facebook, Skyheart and Reedtail were mates, and Icestar, Pinefur, and Duskfur were their daughters.[47] Her half siblings through Reedtail were Dragonflykit, a white tom with dark gray tabby patches and amber eyes, and Duckkit, a brown tabby tom with green eyes and a straight tail.[48]
  • In the Chinese full-color version of Return to the Clans, Icestar, Reedpaw, Swallowpaw, Duskfur, and Pinefur appear as apprentices playfighting as Tigerstar.[49][50]

Quotes

"You don't need to say you're sorry. I just want to make sure you understand what the risks are. Brokenstar left my son in the Dark Forest to rot. If you die in the Dark Forest, you die in real life. Your loved ones will never see you again. Do you comprehend that?"
―Icewing warning Shadowsight about the Dark Forest The Place of No Stars, pages 97-98

Mallownose: "Are you crazy?"
Icewing: "Hear him out. Tigerstar might be able to help us. Harelight and I lived with ShadowClan for a while—"
Mallownose: "Perhaps you should go back there!"
Icewing: "Tigerstar took us in and treated us well. He took you in too when the impostor made Mistystar exile you. He treated you like a Clanmate. You trusted him then, and he lived up to your trust. Don't you think you might trust him now?"
—Icewing and Mallownose when Tigerstar's in their camp Sky, page 325

"What a surprise—you've chosen Icewing. There's another cat who spent too long with ShadowClan. She even trained with you in the Dark Forest, didn't she?"
―Duskfur about Tigerstar choosing Icewing as temporary leader Shadow, page 12

"I wouldn't dream of denying it. I know perfectly well that something is going on, but there isn't much I can do about it. They're organizing behind my back. Believe me, Cloverfoot, I'm keeping my eyes and ears open. Meanwhile, the best thing you can do is warn your warriors to be on alert."
―Icewing to Cloverfoot about RiverClan's unrest Shadow, page 236

"I felt it was important. It means RiverClan cat take its place with the other Clans, in spite of all Splashtail might do. He will not destroy us!"
―Icewing about joining the quest Ivypool's Heart, page 46

"We need to discuss our next steps. I'm glad our escape plan worked, and the kits were born safely. But I left my Clan in a terrible state, and I really need to get back home as soon as possible. The kits are gorgeous. But they do give us a problem. We simply don't have time to wait for them to be weaned and get old enough to travel. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh."
―Icewing to Tumble Leap and Stalk Purr about their journey Ivypool's Heart, page 291

Ivypool: "Are you okay? That awful dream was bad enough for the rest of us, but seeing your camp wrecked like that, and Frostpaw dying, must have been devastating for you."
Icewing: "It was, but I'll be okay, as long as we can carry out our quest and get home soon. I'm just trying to believe what Whistlepaw: that the dream was a warning, not an image of what has really happened. Everything has gone wrong since Mistystar died. I wanted RiverClan to have a real leader, but not a mange-pelt like Splashtail. I'm never going to call him Splashstar. I always knew he was an ambitious cat, but I never dreamed he would do what he's done to gain power and then to hold on to it. He's shown himself to be cruel...and dangerous."
Ivypool: "If all the Clans turn on him, Splashtail will get what he deserves."
Icewing: "That would be satisfying, I suppose. But I'm less concerned about getting revenge on him, and more about RiverClan surviving his leadership. I don't really care what happens to Splashtail. I just want him out of RiverClan so that we can thrive. If Mistystar can see what he has done to RiverClan, she must be furious. I'm determined to restore the Clan to what it was under Mistystar's leadership. I know we can get there, and I won't give up on my Clan."
Ivypool: "It must be so hard for you, being away like this when you know your Clan is in trouble."
Icewing: "It is. But the truth is, all my efforts to hurry might be no use at all. I want to believe Whistlepaw but I still can't get that dream out of my mind. For all I know, RiverClan doesn't even exist anymore. I can only hope that Sunbeam, Frostpaw, and Nightheart have managed to keep Mothwing and Duskfur safe. And that my Clan is okay."
Ivypool: "There may not be much I can do to help your Clan right now. But I'm happy to listen if you want to talk, or just rant to a sympathetic cat. Whatever you say will stay between the two of us."
Icewing: "Thank you. Just knowing that helps. But for the time being, what I want most is to complete this quest so I can go home—no matter what home looks like now. Hurry up, Ivypool. We have some wildcats to find!"
—Ivypool and Icewing about RiverClan Ivypool's Heart, pages 294-296

"I suppose we should do it for the sake of our Clans. If River Ripple hadn't been brave enough to travel down a river, RiverClan would never have existed."
―Icewing about traveling down the River of Spirits Ivypool's Heart, pages 339-340

Icewing: "Ivypool! You can't...it isn't allowed. If you enter the Dark Forest, how would you ever get out?"
Ivypool: "I wouldn't care. Not if I could find Bristlefrost."
Icewing: "Bristlefrost is gone. Gone from the living world, gone from the afterlife. Ivypool, you know this."
—Ivypool and Icewing on the River of Spirits Ivypool's Heart, page 344

Ivypool: "I can't believe this. We're actually in StarClan!"
Icewing: "Not many living cats see what we're seeing now. It's an enormous privilege."
Ivypool: "I don't feel I deserve it. This can't be for me."
Icewing: "We don't deserve it. It's a gift."
—Ivypool and Icewing upon arriving in StarClan Ivypool's Heart, pages 345-346

"Splashtail would have killed any cat who stood between him and power. But Splashtail no longer concerns me. It is the cats standing before me who I care about. You were all used. Your actions and words were twisted by a skilled manipulator. He used your loyalty and courage against you. He threatened the vulnerable and exploited the weak. He made you believe that not supporting him would destroy the Clan when the opposite was true. We must forgive one another, and we must forgive ourselves."
―Icestar to RiverClan Star, page 323

«Icestar was a confident leader, and her Clanmates always watched her quietly and proudly as she addressed the Clans. Owlnose had proved a sensible choice for deputy, his warmth and humility a good match for Icestar, who could occasionally seem a little cool.»
—Nightheart's thoughts about Icestar Star, page 329
